You Decide the Future: Conquered or Conquerer?
T
he biggest thing individuals can do is decide which
type of governance you support. And I don’t mean
which political party you advocate. Either you
believe in a large, centralized entity that controls top-
down, with unlimited powers, or you believe in a small,
decentralized entity that controls from the bottom up,
with limited jurisdiction. This decision is the only one that
really matters regarding America’s future. One thing is
certain: Both Republicans and Democrats are on the side
of top-down unlimited powers and jurisdiction.
The U.S. Bill of Rights emphasizes the latter, with
the first 10 amendments clearly indicating what the
government is limited to, not what it has the authority
to bestow. In other words, the first 10 amendments state
“shall nots” in enumerating the tasks of government. Its
purpose is a singular mandate to protect the “unalienable
rights of each individual,” rights that already existed before
the creation of a government to protect them.
Our “rights” come from God to each of us equally. They
are not privileges granted by a government composed
of men. If they were, then those same men could take
the privileges away at their whim. Coming from God,
however, makes such withdrawal of our rights impossible.
Such rights exist for each of us regardless of government,
or the men who serve it. The understanding of this
fundamental aspect is where America has gotten so badly
off the rail.
We have confused government’s purpose – its mandate
to protect rights already bestowed by God – with its ability
to create privileges through legislation for its own ends.
The law is not the government! The law is supposed to
conform to the foundational principles of Common Law,

which is at the heart of civilized society. It has two basic
tenets: (1) Do everything you agreed to do, and 2) Do not
encroach on any person or his property.
Common Law has systematically been replaced by
Maritime/Admiralty Law, especially relative to civil law.
The differences abound and are so detrimental that it is
staggering to think such a systemic conversion possible
right under our noses. For example, most Americans
think the designation of U.S. Citizen means a person is
an American National. In fact it denotes each of us as a
fictional sub-corporation of the parent corporation of the
United States of America. This status encumbers each
of us in ways of which we are ignorant. It means that as
Americans we are basically governed by commerce law
under Maritime Law, but without our consent.
I urge readers to research this subject – Common Law
versus Maritime Law – because it will profoundly change
your perspective, and perhaps guide you in answering
the above question: Which type of governance do you
support? Are you willing to be the newly conquered? Or
will you do the conquering of the growing threat to your
national identity?

peaking of commerce, Cap & Trade is being sold as
an environmental measure to curb global warming.
While many around the world still believe that
human-produced carbon dioxide is causing the planet’s
rising temperature, this theory no longer has scientific
consensus.
Still Congress continues to advance Cap & Trade
legislation under the guise of decreasing carbon dioxide
and avoiding a global meltdown. Unfortunately, we can’t

count on the mainstream media to give us the truth on this
subject because the owners of most of the news-broadcast
networks stand to greatly profit from Cap & Trade
legislation, especially General Electric, which owns NBC,
MSNBC, and CNBC.
The coverage of this issue by these stations is so
flagrantly biased and uninformed as to insult viewers’
intelligence. GE’s financial future depends on Cap &
Trade as much as it depends on health-care reform for its
very survival. So it is using its position as a broadcaster to
influence Americans that carbon dioxide is the greenhouse
gas destroying the environment, even though there is not a
scintilla of evidence to conclusively prove this theory.
The Chicago Climate Exchange (CCE) has been
established to facilitate carbon-credit trading. Trading
carbon credits is at the heart of Cap & Trade legislation,
because it will create a new commodities market out of
thin air, estimated at $30 trillion. Carbon-credit trading
threatens to be the single largest direct tax on productivity
and/or consumption since the income tax. Because it is
inherently subjective in its conjuring, such trading will
make previous derivative investing look like penny candy.
This scheme literally creates value out of unseen
air/gas, then trades it as a commodity. It does absolutely
nothing to reduce the temperature of the planet. All the
carbon polluters will still be polluting, but with proper
legislation, they will be able to offset the taxes imposed
on their emissions by purchasing carbon credits from the
CCE. (The current Cap & Trade bill allows for all kinds of
exemptions. Big surprise.)
This scheme only works with coercion, just like health
care. All activity by individual persons or companies will

be assessed as either carbon-polluting or -offsetting. A
carbon credit functions as an offset. The good thing for
legislators and Wall Street is that nearly every human
activity is a carbon-polluter, and we will be taxed
accordingly.
Electricity and wood- and fuel-burning, to name a few
big carbon-polluters, are examples of everyday living that
will furnish the government with an entirely new source of
tax revenue that has the potential of wiping out America’s
middle class. Look to Germany for evidence of the
destructive nature of carbon taxation/credit-trading.
Cap & Trade represents another unholy alliance
between government; giant global corporations in
industries that include central banks, energy, and finance;
and a new host of “green” enterprises cropping up
everywhere to get a share of the pending loot.
It is a disgrace that Americans are meeting this new
challenge with the same complacency that defined our
disapproval of the two bailouts (Bush’s $700-billion TARP
and Obama’s $850-billion stimulus package) and health-
care reform. “Save the planet” is pure rhetoric for the scam
of the millennium!
Help stop this legislation now. Initiate a household
savings account for the purpose of helping to fund legal
challenges to legislation that is financially detrimental and
unconstitutional under Common Law. There are a host of
other potential legal paths possible needing only a unified
challenge by the people and the funding to see it through.
Legitimate groups are beginning to surface to take on
these challenges, and we must be there to help with our
resources if we are to conquer the beast of oppressive
legislation and taxation.

Legislative Early
Adjournment Unlikely
T
he Illinois General Assembly usually
tries to adjourn by the end of May.
That hasn’t worked out too well
the past few years as partisan bickering,
the state’s huge budget problems, and the
bloody war between former Governor Rod
Blagojevich and House Speaker Michael
Madigan forced months-long overtime
sessions.
The last time the legislature truly got
out early was in 1999, when then-Senate
President Pate Philip demanded they
adjourn by April 15. After legislators
left town, I didn’t
know what to do
with myself. There

This year, though, the calendar says the
General Assembly plans to adjourn by
May 7. I haven’t really experienced a May
without grueling work hours since those
halcyon days of 1999, so that pleases me.
But I’m not holding my breath, because of
all the carnage I’ve seen the past few years. I
just can’t bring myself to believe.
The early-adjournment idea isn’t going
down well with everyone. The plan at the
moment is to pass a budget that’s billions
of dollars out of balance and inform
Governor Pat Quinn that he is now in

charge of figuring out how to pay the bills.
Newspaper editorial boards are already
warning legislators not to sneak out of town
before truly “solving” the problems, or they
will pay heavy consequences.
One of the demands issued last week by
some of the thousands of protesters who
descended on Springfield to press for higher
state taxes and fewer budget cuts was that
lawmakers stay in town, finish the job, and
abandon their early-adjournment dreams.
“If you try to leave town without doing
your job, we are going to chase you. And
when you come back home, we will be
there,” warned Henry Bayer, the Illinois
director of the American Federation of

So far, though, legislative leaders are
still hoping to at least partially meet that
May 7 adjournment target. The idea at
the moment is to try to finish work on all
“substantive” legislation by that date, and
then return for the last week or so in May
to put the final touches on the budget and
deal with anything else that comes up in the
interim.
But several high-level Democratic
legislators are quite nervous about this
plan. The perception of a “vacationing”
General Assembly
while the state
sinks ever deeper
into a financial and
economic morass
frightens them to
no end. They’ll be
sitting ducks, the
members worry.
Better to finish the
whole thing by May
7 or, even better,
just work through
the whole month,
even if there is little
or nothing to do.
A big factor
playing into the
timing of the
General Assembly’s
summer adjournment will be whether
the Republicans, particularly the House
Republicans, support more borrowing. The
governor wants to borrow billions of dollars
to meet the state’s pension payments. But that
borrowing has to be approved by a three-fifths
vote in the General Assembly, and they can’t
do that in the House without the Republican
minority. If the House Republicans don’t
get on board, the budget will take far longer
to craft and will be very “ugly,” one top
Democrat said last week. If they do get on
board, it’s possible that the legislature could
wrap up everything by May 7.
That doesn’t appear to be in the cards,
however. The Republicans have no incentive
to allow Democrats to conclude business
early. The longer they’re in town, the longer
the Republicans will have easy access to
the media to make their case that the
Democrats are incapable of governing.
I learned long ago that when it comes to
the Illinois Statehouse, don’t ever get your
hopes up about adjournment schedules and
always bet on nothing ever getting done.
That way, you’re never disappointed. Well,
you’re still disappointed, but it’s a little
easier to digest.

Casino Decisions Still on for
May 13, Despite Investigation
T
he Iowa Racing & Gaming
Commission still plans to meet May
13 to decide whether to award a new
casino license for the first time since 2005,
despite calls by gambling opponents to delay
the decision.
Calls for the delay came because of a state
investigation into a $25,000 contribution to
Governor Chet Culver’s re-election campaign
by three supporters of a proposed Fort
Dodge casino who had been paid $25,000
by Dubuque-based Peninsula Gaming. But
in a statement April 21, the five-member
commission said it plans to stay with its
original schedule.
“The Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission
will not change the May 4 date for the public
hearing or the May 13 date for deciding
whether to grant or deny licenses to four
applicants for new casinos,” the news release
stated. “On May 13, the commission will
determine whether it is appropriate to defer a
decision on any applicants to a later date.”
Fort Dodge, Ottumwa, Lyon County, and
Tama County are seeking casino licenses. The
May 4 public hearing will be held at Stoney
Creek Inn Johnston.
Culver declined to comment April 22 on
the investigation; he was participating in a
state-prison groundbreaking in Fort Madison.
A day earlier in Davenport, Culver said
that neither his campaign nor his official
office did anything wrong. “You can be
assured that no one on the campaign or in
the office is the center of that investigation,”
Culver said in a brief interview with the
Quad-City Times after a bill-signing at a
blood center.
Republican candidate for attorney general
Brenna Findley on Friday called for Attorney
General Tom Miller to address the situation,
calling it inappropriate for Donn Stanley
from the attorney general’s office to take over
Culver’s campaign when an investigation is
underway. “It raises a conflict of interest when
one of the attorney general’s top lieutenants
takes a job with the very campaign that is
under investigation for pay to play,” she said.

Branstad Tops Candidates in
Both Income and Donations
Republican gubernatorial candidate (and
former Governor) Terry Branstad and his
wife Christine had a 2009 adjusted gross
income three times as much as Culver and
his wife Mari, three times as much as state
Representative Rod Roberts and his wife
Trish, and nearly four times as much as Sioux
City businessman Bob Vander Plaats and
his wife Darla, according to summaries of
2009 income-tax returns released last week.
Roberts and Vander Plaats are also seeking the
Republican gubernatorial nomination.

Data show Branstad and his wife had an
adjusted gross income of $396,986 in 2009,
which included a 10-month salary of $276,026
as president of the Des Moines University.
Annualized, that would amount to about
$331,231, compared to $130,000 he would
earn if re-elected governor.
The Culvers’ adjusted gross income was
$126,745; the Robertses had an adjusted
gross income of $136,488; and the Vander
Plaatses reported an adjusted gross income of
$103,562.
Branstad’s gifts to charity totaled $41,178,
or 10.4 percent of his adjusted gross income.
The Vander Plaatses donated 5.5 percent of
their adjusted gross income, the Robertses 4.2
percent, and the Culvers 2.2 percent.
Potential 2012 Presidential
Candidates Visit Iowa
Former New York Governor George Pataki
last week pushed for the repeal of federal
health-care reform to a crowd of about
100 Republican activists and officials at the
Embassy Suites in downtown Des Moines,
while keeping the door open to a run for
president in 2012.
“I was governor for 12 years, and I learned
early on that you never say never,” Pataki said
in an interview with IowaPolitics.com. “I do
feel that Washington is headed dramatically
in the wrong direction. We’re all obligated to
stand up and get involved to try to change
that.”
Pataki was last in Iowa in November,
when he was the keynote speaker at the Scott
County Republican Party’s Ronald Reagan
Dinner in Bettendorf. He returned last week
in his new role as chair of Revere America
and its $15-million national campaign to
repeal federal health-care reform. The group
aims to gather 1 million signatures to repeal,
reform, and replace the new law. Pataki said
his work for the group is as a citizen, and he
isn’t getting paid anything for it.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Governor Tim
Pawlenty was in Des Moines recently for an
Iowa Taxpayers Day event. He declined to say
during his visit whether he will announce a
run for president in the coming months, but
he did say that his political action committee
Freedom First will be making endorsements
in Iowa races this election cycle.

gainst Me! has been
selling out for the
better part of a decade,
so complaints about the polish
of the band’s forthcoming
record are already tired to
songwriter/vocalist/guitarist
Tom Gabel.
Because Gabel is a punk
icon and an anarchist, it was
little surprise that there were
negative reactions when the
band jumped to a major label.
But as it prepares to release
White Crosses in June – the
group will play a
Daytrotter.com show at
RIBCO on May 4 – Gabel
talked about the challenge
of being an ever-changing
person in a world of rigid
expectations.
In a recent phone interview,
the 29-year-old Gabel said
he wrote White Crosses in St.
Augustine, Florida – breaking
away from his longtime home
base of Gainesville. “The
people who also live there
have their perceptions of you,”
he said of Gainesville. While he has traveled
and changed, those perceptions remain fixed.
“Moving away from that and just kind of freeing
yourself to be who you fucking are was a good
and liberating experience,” he said.
Of course, those perceptions and expectations
belong not only to Gainseville residents but
to fans of Against Me! And as the band has
evolved, it has faced regular accusations of

career, mostly because
of Gabel’s speaking/
spewing vocals and a
songwriting style that’s
the equivalent of a hard
stare – confrontational
and not terribly interested
in polite conversation.
(As the song “Piss &
Vinegar” put it: “I would
be lying to you if I did
not say something. / That
would make me feel like
a politician, / A middle-
of-the-road opinion no
one finds offensive or
challenging.”)
What has changed
is the music, even
though Gabel chafes at
the assertion that it has
become “poppier.”
“I don’t necessarily
see the pop elements,”
he said. “I think it’s kind
of bullshit in a way.
I’ve always had a love
of melodies and stuff.”
He points to “Pints of

selling out, whether it was signing to the indie
label Fat Wreck Chords or the major label Sire.
“Record labels are record labels,” Gabel
countered. “The difference between a major
record label and an indie record label sometimes
is really hard to tell, in my opinion. ... The
underlying point for every record label is always
the same: to make records and to get them out
to people to hear – to sell records.”
Gabel said it’s “a running joke among us” that
Against Me! makes each album knowing it will
need to rebuild its fan base. “Everybody who’s
already a fan always hates the new record,” he
said, admittedly exaggerating. “They like the
previous record. That’s just the way it is.”
So it’s important to “ignore them when

accepted who they were. For me, that’s a lot of
what this record is.”
The problem for Gabel and Against Me! is
that the musical progression has been toward
the mainstream rather than against it. So while
Gabel claims to be true to himself, his critics call
him a sellout.
Against Me!’s first album for Sire – 2007’s New
Wave – was described by the All Music Guide
as a “straight-up rock record,” and although the
group had shed most of the punk roughness, it
still had the hammer force of Gabel at its heart.
The All Music Guide noted that New Wave was
“crisp, direct, and sharp. It’s clean, but not glossy;
it’s defiant; it’s brash; it’s heartfelt,” and those
traits have been consistent through the band’s

Gabel’s protests aside, White Crosses does
mark a radical departure. There are those
harmonies, but there are also synthesizers and
soaring ballads and some dreamy background
vocals, and the sound has been softened enough
to make it more approachable. It ain’t Justin
Bieber, but musically it’s baffling that Gabel
would object to the claim that it’s the poppiest

it any good? The chorus gives the answer, clear-
eyed and sad but not in any way pathetic or self-

Have you realized all the things you’ll never be?”
“Going into this record, I was really kind of
interested in dropping the plot, and not really
going into it with an agenda of wanting to write
about certain things, and just instead seeing
where my mind wandered to,” Gabel explained
of the songwriting process. “Not trying to make
sense of things while I was writing them, but just
trying to write and make sense of it later.”
“I Was a Teenage Anarchist” suggests that
Gabel is reconsidering his youthful politics, with
the comment that they were “too convenient.”
But he said his disillusionment isn’t with the

but “when it came to me making decisions for
myself, it was like, ‘No no no. Not autonomy for
you. Autonomy for me.’”
Against Me! Will perform on Tuesday, May 4, at

Caroline’s Spine, April 30 at RIBCO
W
hen Caroline’s Spine plays
RIBCO on April 30, the guy
behind the drum kit will likely
be more familiar to the audience than the
band itself. Greg Hipskind, the longtime
drummer for the Quad Cities quartet
Wicked Liz & the Bellyswirls, has been the
touring drummer for Caroline’s Spine since
last fall.
The
Phoenix,
Arizona-based
alt-rock group,
led by singer/
songwriter
Jimmy
Newquist,
had a pair of
albums on
Hollywood
Records in
the late 1990s.
“Sullivan,”
based on the
true story
of the five
Sullivan Greg Hipskind (left) with Caroline’s Spine
brothers from
Waterloo who died in World War II, was
a modest hit. The band also had songs on
the soundtracks to An American Werewolf
in Paris and Varsity Blues in the company
of Bush, Skinny Puppy, Green Day, Foo
Fighters, Collective Soul, and Van Halen,
among others.
Caroline’s Spine never made as much of a
splash as those bands, but it got airplay on
independent radio stations and developed
a loyal following in the Midwest and cities
such as Dallas and Phoenix.
“Places that have always had corporate
radio like the Quad Cities does, they never
got a whole lot of radio play,” Hipskind said.
For that reason, he said, their gig at RIBCO
will be their first Quad Cities appearance.
Hipskind said he remembers seeing the
band eight or so years ago at Cedar Rapids’
Third Street Live. He was never a big fan,
but “Sullivan” stuck with him, and he
lauded the group’s high-energy show.
He said he got a call from a friend
last June asking him if he remembered
Caroline’s Spine. “They need a drummer,”
his friend told him. “Are you available?”
Hipskind got in touch with the band’s
manager and completed an audio test
(drumming along to recordings of songs
the band plays live) and a video tryout.
“It’s a big show,” Hipskind said. “They
wanted to make sure I’m not sitting back
there like Charlie Watts – not moving.”
After passing those tests, Hipskind had to
learn the 20 or so songs the band plays live.

headliner the

Hipskind was
playing his
second show.
After seven
performances
with
Caroline’s
Spine last
fall, Hipskind
was asked to
join. In total,
he’s played
roughly a
dozen gigs.
He said his
favorite songs to play live are set opener
“King for a Day” and “Monsoon” – both
from the band’s 1997 major-label debut.
The drummer said he initially thought
Caroline’s Spine was simply another ’90s
band trying to cash in on fans’ memories.
“I didn’t even know they were still around,
playing live,” he said.
But a pair of singles from the band’s
2008 album, Work It Out, have “gotten tons
of radio play,” Hipskind said, adding that
he hopes Caroline’s Spine can continue to
build its audience.
Another drummer is working with the
band’s other members on a new studio
album (“I don’t even know the new music
yet”), and Hipskind said the current
arrangement has its roots in financial
common sense; it’s cheaper to pay him
and cover his travel and lodging expenses

“Money-wise [for the band], it works out
better this way,” he said.
But Hipskind said the gig has a bit of a
rock-star vibe, with limos and autograph
sessions. “In all honesty, I’d do it for free,”

An Unlit Match
Danika Holmes, May 15 at the Redstone Room

T
he typical aspiring singer/songwriter gets
started by playing hometown open-mic
nights. Danika Holmes is not typical.
The 27-year-old Davenport resident said in
a recent interview that
her mother regularly told
her, “I always knew you
weren’t normal, Danika.”
Holmes added: “I’m not
exactly sure how to take
that coming from my
Mom, but I’ll take it as a
good thing.”
In terms of her music,
being abnormal meant
making her public debut
last year at an audition
for Nashville’s Bluebird
Cafe, at which Garth
Brooks and Taylor Swift
got their starts.
“I have big dreams,”
Holmes explained. “I have big goals. ... I wanted
to get where all the action is immediately. ... As a
songwriter, if you can make it into the Bluebird
Cafe, you’ve really accomplished something
great.”
She wasn’t selected based on her audition, but
you can hear her chutzpah on the track “Unlit
Match” from her debut CD, Second Chances:
“She got a strong confidence when you look her
straight in the eye / But when she steps on stage
you know that woman ain’t shy / She’s like an
unlit match / Just waiting to burn.”
Holmes will be celebrating the release of the
album May 15 at the Redstone Room, and she
opened for the Nadas there on April 24. So she’s
circling back to the accepted new-artist tack. But
Holmes doesn’t have little plans, and she hopes
to tour Europe next year.
Holmes said she taught for four years and, at
the point she chose to pursue music – she had
just turned 26 – she was a dissertation away
from a Ph.D. in personal finance. “I ended up
writing an album instead of a dissertation,” she
said.
Mostly co-written with producer Paul
Hamilton, Second Chances is dominated by
ballads, with some gentle rockers and a dash of

outstrip her songwriting chops, which will
undoubtedly grow with seasoning and practice.
Slower, conversational songs such as “Half as
Strong as You” and “Annie May” are heartfelt
but too vague,
mistaking a lack
of specificity for
universality. And
there’s not enough

While many people
will find it touching
and inspiring, for
me it’s begging for telling details and sharper
language: “This disease is stealing you / You’re
mostly unresponsive.” And it never gets deeper
than surface emotions; I don’t get any sense of a
relationship beyond the one on the death bed.
“Annie May,” meanwhile, has a good hook,
marking a woman’s long life with national and
global events: “Tell me all about it, Annie May /
Tell me all the stories of your days.” But outside
of the barest biographical details – the number
of her children, for example – the song never
sketches Annie May outside of her context,
as an individual. And its sense of history is
rudimentary, with “two more wars for freedom”
shorthand for the Cold War conflicts in Korea
and Vietnam.
“Sounds Like Goodbye” shows more
potential in its chorus. The words themselves
work – “How come when you say ‘I love you,
darling’ / It sounds like goodbye?” – but it’s the
break between the lines that really sells them,
with ample time driving the sentiment home.
And the aching singing and nimble phrasing on
the title track elevate the material.
It’s also critical to remember that Holmes has

I was extremely offended by your response
to the woman whose female friend has a
mustache. Your only suggesting ways to get
her to remove it was very anti-feminist. I
have female friends with facial hair. Instead
of waxing it, they say, “Screw American
standards of beauty. I’m beautiful just the
way I am.” Your response could’ve included
that option. My girlfriends with facial
hair have no problem getting dates with
men, and that’s because they’re confident
and beautiful. Just please don’t perpetuate
misogynistic crap.

If I hated women, I’d tell those looking to
date men to grow a big hairy hedge above their
lip. Then they’d appeal to the .00001 percent
of the American male population who think
nothing’s sexier than leaning over to the girl
they’re dating and whispering, “I think I should
tell you... there’s a little piece of food caught in
your mustache.”
Oh, what a terrible thing, promoting
“American standards of beauty.” Foot-binding?
Clitoridectomy? Naw, plucking tiny hairs
above a woman’s lip. Quick! Somebody start
an international human-rights organization!
(Maybe something spelling out the acronym
MORONIC.) “Sorry, can’t go to the Darfur
rally. We’re marching for a woman’s right to lip
fur.” All together now: “Hell no, we won’t mow!”
While I see the occasional strip of fur
bumming a ride on a woman’s lip, you claim
to know a veritable parade of women from
Mustachia. Methinks you’re telling a fibby
– for what you think is a good cause: keeping
women feministically correct, and never mind
that they’ll likely end up miserable and dateless.

Fu Manchu is no impediment to getting dates.
Right. There are men who’ll date a woman
with a ‘stache: the visually impaired, the wildly
desperate, and college-boy feminists. The latter
aren’t so much into girls with mustaches as
they’re into being the guy who’s cool with girls
with mustaches.
On a positive note, being a woman with
a fur-trimmed lip does solve that age-old
problem of getting men to stop addressing
conversation to one’s breasts. Take poor
Stephanie Mills, the Greenpeace spokeslady
who went on TV in Australia. Unfortunately,
the loudest thing on screen was her mustache.
Even the host couldn’t help himself: “There is
a mustache on a lady!” Miller had much to say
about victims of nuclear testing, but she might
as well have been farting out “The Twelve Days
of Christmas.”
Now, I’m all for a woman with a mustache
making the same money as a man with a
mustache. Unfortunately, Congress can’t amend
the laws of attraction. A mustache is a really
clear male sex characteristic. Women with
facial hair tend to have higher testosterone or
be aging out of their child-bearing years, while
men are hard-wired to go for young, feminine-
featured women. Suggesting women who want
boyfriends go proudly un-pruned is like telling
men with moobs to rub glitter on their man-
cleavage and strut it in low-cut tops.
Rather amazingly, you’re suggesting women
empower themselves by looking just like men. The
reality is, a woman needs a mustache like a fish
on a bicycle needs a man. Sure, a woman’s place is
wherever she wants it to be, but if she’d like male
company, she’d best avoid looking like Gandhi,
Saddam, Charles Manson, or one of the Village
People, and snarling through her ‘stache: “We
haven’t come a long way, and don’t call me baby!”
a lemon zester. Back waxing requires constant
maintenance (in your case, probably moving
into a spa), plus front waxing to match.
The look you should aim for is somewhere

fur reduction over total fur removal. Laser
treatment, which works best on those with
light skin and dark hair, is probably your
ideal bet for long-term back-hair thinning
– lasting months or a year, or very possibly,
permanently. You’ll still have some growth
back there, but from a woman’s perspective,
there’s feeling a little body hair and there’s
feeling like Dian Fossey making the first
peaceful contact with a mountain gorilla.

500 companies began when Mercury was
retrograde, including Disney, Goodyear, and
Boeing. The moral of the story: Of all the
signs of the zodiac, it’s most important that
you Tauruses don’t worry about launching
new projects during the current Mercury
retrograde.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Would

rock band World Entertainment War
played at a San Francisco nightclub
on the same bill as the Beatnigs, an
assemblage fronted by Michael Franti. Their
avant-garde industrial music featured band
members rhythmically hitting a steel bar with a
power saw and slapping a long chain against a
piece of sheet metal hanging from the back wall.
Fast-forward to 2009, when Franti’s latest band
Spearhead released a catchy romantic pop ditty
titled “Say Hey (I Love You),” which reached

I was pleased when I discovered

matinee performance, I wasn’t the only one
who thought so.
Miss Nelson Has a Field Day focuses
on three Smedley Tornadoes teammates
– Daniel (Brad Hauskins), Kenny (Don
Denton), and Patrick (Bret Churchill)
– who haven’t won a single football game,
or even scored a point, during their season.
Their well-meaning coach (Janos Horvath)
asks them to run a lap during practice,
but they prefer to laze around, whining
that they’ll never win, so why should they
bother making an effort? Their attitudes
change, though, when Miss Nelson
intervenes as Coach Viola, striding onto the
field with a black wig on her head, warts on
her nose, a scowl on her lips, and a presence
that not so much inspires change from her
athletes as demands it.

The funniest moments for me – and
there were many – were the subtle, clever
ones that gave the scenes and characters
more dimension and likability; the funniest
moments for the kids, I believe – based
on the intensity of their laughter and their
lack of squirminess – were those that
included exaggerated physical comedy
and the character of Viola Swamp. While I
appreciated, for instance, the final tableau
with the “Gatorade” (made of orange cloth)
being dumped onto the coach’s head,
the kids got the biggest charge out of the
original coach’s inability to do a push-up.

after the show, I nearly lined up to get his
autograph on the back of my program, just
like the other kids.)
Worth mentioning on the technical side
was the strobe light that was used to create
the slow-motion action scenes, a nice touch
that solved what was no doubt a difficult
part to stage by director Kimberly Furness.
And Gregory Hiatt’s costume designs
– particularly Swamp’s – were humorously
translated from Allard’s pages.
Meanwhile, the simple backdrop
consisted of a huge black curtain that,
unfortunately, toppled over during a scene
change, and caused many young audience
members to shout, “That’s not supposed
to happen!” The actors and stage crew
quickly made amends, though, and before
the remaining scenes were played out in
front of the Church Basement Ladies 2
kitchen set, one of the actors called out to
the audience, “Just pretend all this stuff
behind me isn’t here!” Somehow this
snafu – which might’ve affected me more
negatively if I hadn’t been surrounded by a
bunch of chirpy and easily adaptable kids
– seemed appropriate considering Miss
Nelson’s message of perseverance, and there
was something unique and particularly
endearing about watching three skinny
football players doing jumping jacks in
front of a 1960s-style refrigerator.
