Bender to stay in prison

another year of knowing the man
who haunts them will remain behind
bars for his crimes.
On July 17, 1974, Robin C.
Bender killed 27-year-old Kenneth
Youngpeter and his father, Louis,

and tried to kill Kenneths wife and
a neighbor in an attempt to cover up
a botched burglary. On Friday, the
Ohio Parole Board denied parole for
Bender for the fifth time in 42 years
while Elaine (Bockey) Evans waited
for the news.

DELPHOS The Delphos Public Library joins libraries in

schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating
the dynamic changes that are happening in todays libraries.
April 10-16 is National Library Week, a time to highlight the
changing role of libraries, librarians and library workers.
This years theme is Libraries Transform.
Libraries today are more about what they do for and
with library users as opposed to what they have for patrons.
Libraries arent only a place of quiet study, but also creative
and engaging community centers where people can collaborate using new technologies, check out books, DVDS, CDs,
cake pans, learn how to use electronic devices or just relax.
The library offers access to a variety of print and digital
resources, including Ohio Digital library, genealogy indexes,
and online databases of articles and magazines that can be
accessed in person or online.
Libraries of all types are evolving to meet the needs of the
communities they serve.
At the Delphos Library we are transforming by offering
a myriad of activities year round, Director Kelly Rist said.
We are a community meeting place, not just a library. This
next Thursday, every part of the library will be used for
something. We have library activities and offerings from
organizations. People should take the opportunity next week
to come in and see everything we have to offer. I think they
will be surprised.

Spring turkey
season starts soon

DELPHOS The air is
still crisp and on the chilly
side but the trees are budding and the calendar says
its springtime in Ohio. That
means its time for the spring
turkey hunting season. This
year the season begins April
18 and closes May 15. There
is a special youth turkey season beginning on April 16
that closes on April 17.

Natural Resourses Wildlife
Officer Brad Buening for
Van Wert County shared
some information for those
looking for a turkey hunt.
In the spring turkey season, any bird a hunter bags
must be a bearded turkey.
He explained that a bearded turkey has modified
feathers in front that look
like a beard. He said it was
usually the gobblers that
sports a beard, but some-
times hens have beards as

well.
The main thing to have
as a youth hunting is a youth
license, Buening said.
They must be accompanied
by a non-hunting adult.
Early on in Ohios history, turkeys were a common
sight and highly regarded as
an abundant food supply for
both Native Americans and
early settlers. But as more
and more land was cleared
and areas cleared, slowly the
bird disappeared. By 1904
not a single turkey could be
found in Ohio.
Progressing in phases,
the turkey was reintroduced
in Ohio in 1952, according
to the Ohio Department of
Natural Resources, Division
of Wildlife. From 1952-57,
The Division of Wildlife
raised 1,400 turkeys and
tried to establish the birds in
the southeastern forest lands.

High School Musical at 7 p.m. April 29 and
30 in the Jefferson Middle School auditorium.
Presale tickets are $6 and can be purchased
beginning Monday in the high school office.
Tickets at the door will be $7.
Its Spring Clean Up at Walnut Grove Cemetery.

Clean up will start on April 22. Decorations
around grave markers will be disposed of if not
removed by that date. Personnel will be cleaning up
in preparation for the mowing season.
Christmas decorations will be removed.

DELPHOS On April 1, officers met with a juvenile that
stated that he was assaulted by an adult male near Clay and
First streets. There were no injuries and the incident remains
under investigation.
On April 2, officers met with a female in the 800 block
of South Adams Street in reference to a telecommunications
harassment incident. Officers met with the complainant and
found that a male had been contacting her after being asked to
stop. The male was contacted and advised to cease all contact
with the complainant.
On Sunday, officers were made
aware of an active warrant out of
the Van Wert Common Pleas Court
for 35-year-old Shane Harter of
Delphos. Officers located Harter
and took him into custody. He
was transported to the Van Wert
County Jail.
On Monday, officers met with
a complainant in the 700 block of
North Elm Street in reference to
a criminal damaging complaint.
Officers arrived and spoke with
the complainant and were shown
a fence on the property that had

been knocked down. The incident
remains under investigation.
On Monday, officers were dispatched to the 400 block of
South Cass Street to investigate a criminal damage complaint.
Officers spoke to the owner of a vehicle at the residence and
found that unknown persons had caused damage to his vehicle.
On Monday, an officer on patrol
observed the driver of a vehicle
commit a traffic offense. A traffic
stop was initiated and contact was
made with the driver, 35-year-old
Christopher Wilson of Fort Jennings.
During the stop it was found that
Wilson was operating the vehicle on
a suspended drivers license. Wilson
was issued a citation for the violation
and will appear in Lima Municipal
Court to face the charge.
On Tuesday, officers were made
aware of threats made by a juvenile

toward another juvenile. Officers
investigated the incident and found
that the threats were made. Charges of aggravated menacing
are being reviewed by the Juvenile Court. During the investigation of this incident, officers discovered information of
a burglary committed by one of the juveniles involved. The
investigation of that incident remains under investigation.
On Tuesday, officers met with a female and her son at the
police department in reference to a criminal damaging complaint. Officers were told by the female that her sons vehicle
was damaged. Officers were given the name of a suspect and
after speaking with that person, did find that he caused the
damage. It is undetermined at this time if the damage will be
taken care of or if charges will be pursued.

Murdick , 86, of Columbus,
passed away Monday. She
was born April 23, 1929,
in Columbus to Charles O.
Violet and Helen Violet, who
preceded her in death.
Betty will be missed by
her family: sons, Mark (wife
Terri), Brian, Craig (wife
Lynne), daughter Laurie
(husband Geoff Stinson); six
grandchildren; and her dog,
Mia. We will all miss her
love and support and sense
of humor. Betty leaves an
empty space in the hearts of
all who knew and loved her.
She
received
her
Associate in Arts Degree
(1949)
from
Stephens
College in Missouri, and her
Bachelor of Fine Arts from
The Ohio State University.
She graduated from the
College
of
Education
(1951). In her young adult
life, Betty worked as a professional model for ONeils
Department Store, and then
also worked as an interior
decorator. Her true passion
and profession in life was as
a devoted loving wife, and
mother of three boys and
one girl.
Betty was a very creative
individual, loving the arts
in all forms, music, dance,
painting, design, and most
forms of creative expression.
She loved the outdoors and
was very active in her life.
She truly enjoyed camping
with the family, bowling,
and was an avid golfer. As a
graduate of Ohio State, she
enjoyed following Buckeye
Football. She was a very
warm and generous person,
but also smart, witty and
funny. She liked to stay up
on current events by reading
the newspaper on a daily
basis. Betty was a tremendous cook, and had regular requests for many of her
meals and recipes.

obscenity involving a minor, each a felony 2. He was released

She was born April 16,
1926, in Fort Jennings to John

her in death.
On Nov. 28, 1946, she
married Art Gasser, who died
Aug. 17, 1966. In April, 1970,
she married Ben E. Sergeant,
who died Oct. 23, 1999.

be a prayer service at 1:45

Heitmeyer, 90, of Ottoville
died at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday
at Van Wert Inpatient Hospice
Center.
She was born March 22,
1926, in Glandorf to Lawrence
and Martha (Schroeder)
Unterbrink, who preceded her
in death.
On June 7, 1947, she married Norbert Heitmeyer, who
died Oct. 6, 2013.
She is survived by her children, Keith (Kathy) Heitmeyer of
Ottoville, Jane (Jesse) Swartz of Medina, Janet (Richard) Hemker
of Ottoville, Jeff (Ron Buck) Heitmeyer of Denver, Colorado,
Mike (Judy) Heitmeyer of Ottoville and Judy (Chuck) Braden
of New Knoxville; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a
sister, Esther Recker of Glandorf; and a brother, Jim (Bernice)
Unterbrink of Glandorf.
She is also preceded in death by a sister, Carol (Leo) Brinkman;
brother-in-law, Bill Recker; and three great-grandsons.
Alicia was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church, Ottoville, and its Altar Rosary Society. She retired from
Ottoville Local Schools where she had worked in the cafeteria.
She also worked at VanCrest Nursing Home and had helped her
husband farm on their Century Farm.
She was an avid sports fan and especially loved golfing at
the Delphos Country Club and she followed the Ohio State
Buckeyes and the Ottoville Big Green. Alicia loved the outdoors.
She mowed her own lawn until the age of 89 and loved flowers
and birds. She liked cooking and was known for baking breads,
donuts, pies, noodles and chocolate angel food cake and also
did canning. She enjoyed knitting and was known for having
crocheted more than 100 afghans for family and friends. She
was a member of the Polka Boosters and the Home and School
Association.
Alicia fostered an atmosphere of fun and her favorite saying,
and last words, were Love you more.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. today at
Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the Very Reverend
Jerome Schetter and Deacon Joe Flores officiating. Burial will
follow in St. Marys Cemetery, Ottoville.
Memorial contributions may be given to the St. Marys

Marjorie, and built a home on Lima
Avenue here in Delphos.
Hubert enjoyed a loving journey married to his wife Marjorie (October 2014)
for 71 years and 3 months. Yes, 71 years
and 3 months. How beautiful is that?
Now a strong 94 years of age, (heart of
a 60-year-old his doctor tells) Hubert
reflected on life and his days in the service with a clarity making it seem just
yesterday.
As I left from my visit with Hubert,
he remarked of how he planned to cut
the grass, maybe tomorrow, and soon

would begin with the flower and vegetable garden. Now thats a way to remain
SENIORWISE! Thanks Hubert.
Some Favorites for Hubert:
Season of the year: Summer, I like
hot weather.
Color: Red, you can see it a long
way.
Food: Beef anything!
Favorite car: Ford or Chevy, anything that runs.
Favorite sports moment: Football,
I played football (guard) in high school.
My favorite decade: The 1950s, our
kids were born and we built my house.
My favorite president: Harry
Truman, he saved at least 50,000 men
by ending WWII.
One thought I offer to young people: Dont go into debt, only buy what
you can pay for.
If I had a magic wand and could fix
one thing in this world Get rid of
all the dope-drugs.
My best piece of advice about life:
Do whats right and keep on moving.

Bank warns consumers of advance fee scam

DEFIANCE First Federal Bank has received reports

from a growing number of consumers in over 30 states regarding fraudulent letters and emails bearing the First Federal
Bank name offering loans with forged documentation and the
requirement of up-front payment.
In Advance Fee Scams such as this, the recipients are guaranteed loans after a pre-payment of a non-refundable insurance fee is made. Recipients that have fallen victim to the
scam are reporting that the party fictitiously representing First
Federal Bank is denying the promised funds or requesting
additional funds to clear issues with credit reports.
If you receive a solicitation similar to this, follow these
steps to help protect yourself:

A Visit with Hubert Truman 94Wise
Hubert Truman is a World War II veteran (August 1942-January 1946) having served as an Army airborne engineer
with the 874th and 875th. He graduated
Athens High School (Alabama) in 1941.
Truman recalled he was working in
Chicago at the time of the Pearl Harbor
attack (Dec. 7, 1941) and that he and a
coworker, on learning of the war news,
remarked Wheres Pearl Harbor?
The bulk of Huberts service time
was in the Pacific Theater (New Guinea,
and the Philippines). Hubert recalled
shipping out of San Francisco (1942),
passing under the Golden Gate Bridge,
and wondering of his return. Then four
years later, returning in ceremonious
fashion under that same bridge with
low flying planes dropping welcome
home fresh oranges all about the decks.
Talk about an indelible memory! There
were so many returning ships in the Bay
that day they were sent and spent the
night on Alcatraz Island. Hubert recalled
being served a great steak that evening
and a buddy getting two steaks because
he spoke German to the man in the slop
line. Now thats a notably rare first night
back!
In his settled days after the war,
Hubert worked some 35 years at Lima

casserole and a banana favorite.

As I write this, we are almost
through March. April 1 is already
Friday. Next week our three children
will be home from school for spring
break. Parent/teacher conferences will
be held on Thursday. After spring
break there are only nine more weeks
of school left. It is hard to believe how
fast this term is going.
My husband Joe planted quite a few
Red Pontiac seed potatoes on Saturday.
We have been wanting to also get
some peas and radishes planted. We
are hearing that we will have another
cold week coming with temperatures
below freezing. I hope it will miss us
but we cant control the weather and
need to accept what God sends.
Joe is always eager to start planting
garden. Its a good thing that he is
because I like to put it off as long as
possible. I like planting garden when
its warm and I can go out barefooted
to plant.
Daughter Susan has started training her pony, Tough Boy, now. He
is already two years old. She is line
driving him and teaching him the
commands. He is almost ready to hitch
to the pony cart. Susan works at the
RV factory then spends her evenings
working with Tough Boy.
On Good Friday we had a nice
relaxing family day. We set the table
for all the family. The men and boys
grilled the chicken while the girls and
I prepared the rest of the menu.
Our meal consisted of mashed potatoes, gravy, dressing, barbequed chicken, corn, taco salad, Easter eggs, dill
pickles, hot peppers, celery and carrot
sticks, sliced Colby and Swiss cheese,
homemade bread, butter and strawberry jam. Also Swiss roll bars (that
daughter Elizabeth brought), cinna-

2 cans (15 oz. each)
chili with beans
6 hot dogs
6 corn tortillas (6 inch)
1/2 cup shredded mild
Cheddar cheese
Heat oven to 425
degrees. Spread chili onto
bottom of 8-inch square
baking dish sprayed with
cooking spray.
Place 1 hot dog on
each tortilla; roll up. Place,
seam sides down, over
chili. Sprinkle with cheese;
cover.
Bake for 25 minutes or
until hot dogs are heated
through and cheese is melted.

mashed potatoes and we had more than
enough for us. It is nice to have good
neighbors.
Our afternoon was spent playing
games. Joe has a croquet set that eight
people can play but outside the wind
was chilly so it was decided to play
games indoors.
Daughter Susan is still only working four days at the factory so she
will be home on Friday. Daughter
Elizabeth has plans to come home on
Friday. Its always enjoyable to work
with the girls.

Bake one chocolate cake in a 9x13
inch pan. Let cool.
Topping 1:
5 tablespoons flour
1 1/4 cups milk
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup oleo
1 cup shortening
Mix flour and milk in saucepan and
cook until thick, stirring constantly.
Cream together sugar, oleo, and shortening. Add flour mixture, beat well and
put on cake.
Topping 2:
1/2 cup oleo
1 egg
3 tablespoons cocoa
2 1/2 tablespoons water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
Melt oleo and cocoa together. Cool.
Beat egg, vanilla, and water; add powdered sugar, blending well. Stir with
oleo/cocoa mixture. Pour this topping
over first topping on cake and refrigerate.

Warmer temperatures have
turned dull brown wheat
fields green and farmers need
to closely observe developmental stages to make wise
management
decisions.
Weather determines the timing of a growth stage, so
farmers should scout and
evaluate wheat fields to know
when to apply certain management practices.
Feekes Scale is the growth
stage system commonly used
by Ohio farmers to evaluate
wheat. This scale uses numbers from 1 to 11 to designate
a certain growth stage. Wheat
fields in the area are currently
at Feekes growth stages 3
5. Wheat generally reaches
growth stage 2 3 before
becoming dormant during the
winter months. Most fields
are at growth stage 3 when
green fields are first noticed
in the spring. Wheat is still
low growing and producing
tillers (additional shoots that
may produce grain) at growth
stage 3. Stage 4 and 5 are
identified by the amount of
upright growth in the wheat
plants.
Tillering ends during
growth stage 4 and the plant
becomes more upright.
Growth stage 4 is the time
farmers should evaluate the
stand to determine if they
want to keep the field in
wheat with at least 25 tillers per square foot. Feekes
growth stage 5 is identified
by upright plants with individual tillers having strongly
erect sheaths. Sheaths are the
leaf structure wrapped around
the stems. The growing point
for each tiller is still below
the soil surface. The growing
point at this time has already
determined all the future
leaves and the cells of the
future grain head have been
initiated. The future number
of potential kernels and size
of the grain head has been
determined.
Feekes growth stage 6
occurs when the first node
is visible above the soil surface. Gently pull down the
leaf blades and sheaths on
the stem and look for the

first node at the base of the
stem. This node will appear
as bump or area of a different
shade of green on the lower
stem. It is often called a joint
since it looks like an area connecting two parts of the stem.
The growing point will be
above the node. Eventually,
four nodes will form by the
time the grain head emerges
from the stem. There will be
a leaf attached at each node;
thus the grain stem will have
four nodes and four leaves
along its length at full emergence. Feekes 6 is one of
the most significant growth
stages for wheat. At this time
the plant has switched from
vegetative to reproductive
growth. Tillers are now susceptible to permanent injury
since the growing point is
now above the soil surface.
By this time a farmer
has applied all of the nitrogen needed to insure optimal yields. Yields may be
reduced if the first spring
nitrogen application occurs
after growth stage 6. It is

Finely chop graham
crackers with food chopper.
Combine graham crackers,
butter and sugar. Press
into bottom and up sides
of 9-inch springform pan.

Pour half of filling over the

Regulations to Remember: The daily bag limit for walleye in Ohio waters of Lake Erie is 4 fish per angler through
April 30; minimum size limit is
15 inches. The
daily bag limit for
yellow perch is 30
fish per angler in
all Ohio waters of
Lake Erie. The
trout and salmon
daily bag limit is 2 fish per angler; minimum size limit is 12
inches. The black bass (largemouth and smallmouth bass)
daily bag limit is 5 fish per angler with a 14-inch minimum
size limit.
Western Basin
Walleye: When conditions have allowed, walleye have been
caught by trolling along the east buoys of the Camp Perry
firing range. Anglers jigging have caught fish on and around
the reefs of the Camp Perry firing range, nearshore west of the
firing range and in Maumee Bay. Anglers trolling have been
using deep-diving crankbaits or shallow-diving crankbaits
with snap weights to catch walleye in the top half of the water
column. Anglers jigging have been using hair jigs and emerald
shiners.
The Lake Erie water temperature is 45 off Toledo and 42 off
Cleveland, according to the nearshore marine forecast.
MAUMEE RIVER: The river is rising again and is predicted to crest

sometime today; wading to Bluegrass Island is not possible at this time. Water
visibility is poor and temperature has dropped to 44 F. Fishing pressure
is medium. The catch is sporadic with some limits and some anglers leaving
without fish. Most commonly-used bait for walleye is a Carolina-rigged
twister tail with a 18- to 36-inch leader with between 1/4- and 5/8-oz. of
weight, depending on water flow. Bright-colored twister tails usually work the
best; anglers use a number of lures and live bait for white bass, including small
jigs, spinner baits and jigs tipped with minnows. Brightly-colored lures are the
most productive. As the water levels rise, anglers will concentrate at White
Street, Orleans and the Towpath. These conditions will likely hold through the
weekend. The walleye run is still going strong; the cold weather and water
temperature has slowed down the spawning. Surveys showed good numbers
of fish in the river with most females still not ready to drop their eggs. Water
temperatures will continue to stay in the lower 40s over the weekend. The
daily bag limit for walleye, saugeye and sauger is 4 fish through April 30;
minimum-size limit is 15 inches.
SANDUSKY RIVER: The river is above normal and rising; water temperature is 44 F and visibility is poor. Fishing pressure is low with only
a few walleye being caught. Most commonly-used bait for walleye is a
Carolina rigged twister tail with a 18- to 36-inch leader with between 1/4to 5/8-oz. of weight, depending on water flow. Bright-colored twister tails
usually work the best; for white bass, anglers use a number of lures and live

Camp Heritage offering kids hunter education camp
Looking for summer camps your child might enjoy this summer? Consider
giving your child an experience to remember at a hands-on hunter education
camp for kids at Camp Heritage in southeast Ohio July 8-10.
Camp Heritage, Inc., is located at 600 Robinette Ridge Rd., New
Marshfield, Ohio 45766. The purpose of this organization is to promote the
stewardship of our land, wildlife and outdoor heritage by providing education and guidance for the future generations. Camp Heritage was founded
by George Foreman. Our Hunter Education Camp was started in 1999, using
facilities at Lake Snowden.
Since that time, we have incorporated and become Camp Heritage, Inc. (a
501(c)(3) organization), now located at its permanent site with a meeting facility and bathroom facilities. We have joined forces with Athens Fish & Game
Club in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. We put
on a camp every year on the second weekend of July for youth ages 9-15
who have not previously successfully completed a hunter education course.
Registration is limited to 50. The campers arrive on Friday evening and leave
on Sunday afternoon.
During that time, they are given the Hunter Education course with handson experience with shotguns, rifles, muzzleloaders and archery equipment.
We have a qualified and experienced staff that provides safety and professionalism. The 32-acre camp site provides adequate space and facilities. All
structures and ranges are first designed for safety, then form and function.
This no cost to campers weekend is grant-funded and staffed by members
of Athens Fish & Game Club, certified instructors, and local sportsmen and
sportswomen.

Hunters prep for Ohios 2016 Wild Turkey Season
COLUMBUS For many hunters, spring brings the unmistakable sound of
gobbling wild turkeys as Ohios annual hunt of this popular game bird begins.
The 2016 Ohio spring hunting season opens on April 18 and the youth
wild turkey season is Saturday and Sunday, April 16-17, according to the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
The ODNR Division of Wildlife anticipates approximately 65,000 licensed
hunters, not counting exempt landowners hunting on their own property, will
enjoy Ohios popular spring wild turkey season before it ends May 15.
The spring and youth turkey seasons are open statewide with the exception
of Lake La Su An Wildlife Area in Williams County, which requires a special
hunting permit.
Hunters are required to have a hunting license and a spring turkey hunting permit. The spring season bag limit is two bearded turkeys. Hunters can
harvest one bearded turkey per day, and a second spring turkey permit can be
purchased at any time throughout the spring turkey season. Turkeys must be
checked no later than 11:30 p.m. the day of harvest.
All hunters must report their turkey harvest using the automated gamecheck system. Game-check is available online, by phone or at a license agent. A
complete list of participating license agents can be found at wildohio.gov. Visit
the Turkey Hunting Resources page at wildohio.gov, or call 800-WILDLIFE
(945-3543) for more information about the game-check process.
The youth-only turkey season is April 16-17 for youth possessing a valid
youth hunting license and a turkey permit. Youth hunters must be accompanied
by a non-hunting adult, 18 years of age or older. Only two wild turkeys may
be checked by a youth hunter during the 2-day season. Additionally, if two
turkeys are harvested in the youth season, no additional birds may be taken by
the youth hunter for the duration of the spring turkey season.
Hunting hours are 30 minutes before sunrise until noon from April 18-May
1. Hunting hours from May 2-15 will be 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset.

youth season.
Hunters may use shotguns or archery equipment to hunt wild turkeys. It is
unlawful to hunt turkeys using bait, live decoys or electronic calling devices
or to shoot a wild turkey while it is in a tree. The ODNR Division of Wildlife
advises turkey hunters wear hunter orange clothing when entering, leaving or
moving through hunting areas in order to remain visible to others.
Wild turkey breeding activity is primarily controlled by the increasing
amount of daylight. Hens typically start incubating eggs around May 1 in
Ohio. Ohios current wild turkey population is approximately 175,000.
Wild turkeys were extirpated in Ohio by 1904 and were reintroduced in
the 1950s by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. Ohios first modern day wild
turkey season opened in 1966 in nine counties, and hunters checked 12 birds.
The wild turkey harvest topped 1,000 for the first time in 1984. Spring turkey
hunting opened statewide in 2000, and Ohio hunters checked more than 20,000
wild turkeys for the first time that year.

Bats will be starting to emerge or migrate to their breeding areas in Ohio.
If you dont like biting insects such as mosquitos then you should love bats.
They consume a large number of insects at night including the biting ones.
Without them, we may not want to go outdoors at night.

New boat ramp at Berlin Lake
ATWATER Starting in June of 2016, construction of a boat ramp will
begin on Berlin Lake, according to the ODNR.
The ramp will provide access for the fishing and boating public and fill
a much-needed gap for public water access on the western end of the lake.
This ramp will be located on US Army Corps of Engineers property that is
managed by the ODNR Division of Wildlife. The address for the news ramp is
15988 German-Church Street, NE.
The ODNR Division of Engineering and a private engineering firm have
designed the ramp and developed a preliminary site plan. The ramp was
designed based on the expected use and will have a 2-lane launch, 77 vehicle
with trailer parking spots and 16 vehicle-only parking spots.
Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2016 with completion by
December 2016; the ramp is scheduled to be ready for use for the 2017 boating
season. Funding for this project is made possible through state gas tax money
from the ODNR Division of Wildlifes Boater-Angler Fund.

ELIDA Many a youngster dreams of playing a sport

at the next level.
Not nearly as many get to
achieve that dream.
Mark Elida fast-pitch softball standout Michaela Black
as one in the latter category.
She signed a national letter-of-intent Friday afternoon
to attend Ohio Wesleyan
University in Delaware and
play for the Battling Bishops.
Im excited to finally
get this decision out of the
way. Its amazing to have the
chance to not only continue
my academic career but also
my athletic career, Black
said. It hasnt hit me just yet
that Im going to be doing
this; probably, it will finally

hit me when Im on the campus and realize where Im at
and what Im doing.
With the decision coming down to the Bishops,
the University of Findlay
and Dennison University, it
came down to simple chemistry that was the final reason. according to the Lady
Bulldog hurler.
When I went down for
visits, I hit it off right away
with (head) coach (Cassie)
Cunningham and her dad.
Plus, the girls I met just
seemed so amazing and welcoming, Black continued.
Cunningham is in her 10th
season at the helm of the
Battling Bishops softball program.
The Red and Black are
members of the North Coast
Athletic Conference in the

National Collegiate Athletic
Association Division III
ranks.
Basically, they want me
to finish my senior year of
softball here and then they
will contact me about their
summer program and what
I need to work on. Im just
going to stay busy, Black,
a planned psychology major,
added. I am supposed to
get to campus in August and
well go through an entire fall
and spring season.
Black has a 3-year pitching mark at Elida of 29-15,
with a 2.38 earned run average (100 runs, 181 runs given
up) and a 311-74 strikeout-towalks ration.
At the plate, she has a .384
batting average/.421 on-base
percentage/.707 slugging
percentage/1.128 on-baseplus slugging percentage.

She has 93 hits in 242
at-bats, has scored 70 runs
and knocked in 73 and added
25 doubles, four triples and
15 round-trippers.
Im excited for this
opportunity to live out the
dream I have had for years. I
have been a pitcher through

my high school career and I
expect to stay at that position
at OWU but I will play
any position they ask of me.
Miller City blasts Big Green in PCL

OTTOVILLE The inclement

weather could not deter the Ottoville Big
Green and the Miller City Wildcats baseball teams from getting in their Putnam
County League contest on Wednesday
afternoon.
Most of the areas games were postponed due to the rain but a change of
venue brought the game from Miller
City to Ottoville and the game was on.
The Big Green played the game as
the visitors on their home turf and
wasted no time in getting on the board,
scoring in the top of the first.
However, the Wildcats plated three in
the second and capped off the game with
a 7-run fifth to come away with a 12-1
run-rule victory.
Jacob Schimmoeller struck out eight
Big Green batters and Jackson Lammers
had a pair of hits in four at-bats, driving
in five runs for the Wildcats.
Jared Fanning was the starting pitcher for Ottoville and gave up six runs in
the contest but started the game with a
double and came around to score on a
Zane Martin single to give the guests
an early lead.
The Wildcats answered back with
three runs in the second. Justin Schnipke

led off with a single and after Jacob
Kuhlman was hit by a pitch, Trey
Hermiller doubled home Schnipke.
After a Jackson Lammers, 2-run single,
the home team was up 3-1.
Schimmoeller went to work on the
mound and retired 10 of the next 12
batters, not allowing another hit in the
game.
The Cats added runs in the third and
fourth.
A 2-run double in the third by Logan
Dukes and on a single by Hermiller,
who came all the way around from first
on wild pitches, game Miller City a 5-1
lead in the fourth.
Ottoville got its first base-runner
since the first inning in their half of the
fourth when Troy Warnecke reached on
a walk but was erased on an 8-4 double
play.
Miller City send nine batters to plate
in the fifth. After Corbin Niese led
off the frame with a home run to left,
Schimmoeller followed with a walk and
Schnipke doubled to put runners on
second and third. Dukes followed with
a sacrifice fly to center, giving the Cats
a 7-1 lead. Kuhlman followed by striking out but the ball was dropped by the
catcher, allowing Kuhlman to reach.
Hermiller hit into what appeared to be a
possible double play but an error by the

shortstop put runners on first and second
with one out. Quinton Niese walked to
load the bases and Lammers nailed a
bases-clearing double. A game-ending
single by Mark Kuhlman wrapped up
the win for the Wildcats.

DELPHOS With all

the rain surrounding the TriCounty area the last couple of days, St. Johns and
Lima Central Catholic had a
2-hour window to get their
non-league baseball game
in Wednesday afternoon at
Stadium Park.
Unfortunately, it wasnt to
be.
The teams battled to 3-3
tie before umpires ruled it
was too dark to continue and
just before the rains opened
up.
The game was suspended
and to be continued at a later
date.
The Thunderbirds had
a chance in the top of the
first frame on a 1-out infield
single by Vinny Venturella
against Blue Jay starter Josh
Warnecke. He was forced at
second by Tom Williams and
Williams ended up stranded.

Mets young pitching (Matt Harvey,
Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard
and Steven Matz) is health; all but

prospect; if he returns in June as
expected, the Mets probably get
better. The offense isnt great but
the Mets replaced postseason hero
Daniel Murphy nicely with second
baseman Neil Walker, plus managed to re-sign Yoenis Cespedes.
Dont count out the Nationals in
a post-hype year; the rotation of
Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg,
Gio Gonzalez, Joe Ross and Tanner
Roark is rock solid and right fielder
Bryce Harper might be the best player in the game. The Nats also added
Murphy from the Mets and elite
shortstop prospect Trea Turner will
likely contribute this year. Perhaps
new manager Dusty Baker can find
a recipe here that Matt Williams

tried a sacrifice but Warnecke
gunned Venturella down at
third. Derek Jennings lined
a rip to right field to plate
Williams and send Watkins to
third, from where he scored
on an infield nibbler wide
of first by Keith Meyer.
However, both remaining
runners were stranded.
Vogt opened the home
sixth with a shot to center
and Ditto added a shot to
left, bringing Williams to the
mound. Warnecke tried to
sacrifice but Vogt beat the
throw to third by Williams to
load them up. He scored on a
fly to left by Reindel for a 3-2
lead. After Hellman walked
to load them up, Williams
got a pair of pop-ups to the
infield to leave the damage

and a staff that made huge strides

The Cubs have assembled arguably the best crop of young players in
years and also recently spent money

best right fielder in Jason Heyward,
as well as versatility in infielders
Javier Baez and Ben Zobrist. And
dont forget about future all-stars
Addison Russell and Jorge Soler.
Pitching should be excellent but
there are a few questions. Jake
Arrietas 2015 season (a career-best
1.77 ERA) and John Lackeys (a
career-best 2.77 at age 37) will be
tough to repeat. Never count out the
Cardinals but two of the teams best
three players from 2015, according
to FanGraphs WAR, are now Cubs,
and veteran stars Adam Wainwright
and Matt Holliday are well into their
30s. Dont forget the Pirates, winners
of 98 games last year, who return
All-Star Andrew McCutchen and ace
Gerrit Cole.

Texas has questions, starting

with pitcher Yu Darvish, whos a
legitimate ace at 100 percent. But
Darvish missed all of 2015 after
undergoing Tommy John surgery and
isnt expected back until mid-May.
Opening Day starter Cole Hamels
should be outstanding but the
Rangers will need better performances from Derek Holland and Martin
Perez in 16. Third baseman Adrian
Beltre turns 37 on opening week and
slowed down some last year, while
outfielder Josh Hamilton turns 35 in
May. He will start the season on the
DL. However, theres veteran talent
in DH Prince Fielder, a blossoming
star in 22-year-old Rougned Odor
and one of the games best power
prospects in third baseman Joey
Gallo. The Rangers will be pressed
by the Astros, who have perhaps the
games top farm system plus a slew
of established twenty-something talents, including Jose Altuve, George
Springer, Carlos Correa, Dallas
Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Collin
McHugh and Ken Giles.

base totals have sharply declined
from 49 to 11 in four seasons but

things happen. Its been a very
good game for us as far as
positives things we have done
today.
After Fort Jennings tied
the game, the umpires met
with the coaches and the
game was suspended.
JP grew up a lot today
he was able to do a lot of
good for us and he will be
able to do good things for
us later on in the season. We
got some good pitching and
then the elements mixed in.
It was a very tough for kids
to pitch in but we got some
valuable experience playing
in conditions like this. Maybe
we will have to play a tournament game in this stuff,
said Crestview coach Jim
Wharton.

insane, let alone for a 22-year-old.
With Dusty Baker at the controls, he
might even run a bit in 2016.

Drummer Boy of the Cumberland.
Many young boys marched off
to war looking for adventure, but
they found hard, dangerous work
along with it. The youngest boys
served as drummers; they werent
supposed to be fighters, but they
did a very important job during the
Civil War.
These boys marked the daily
routine of the camp by signaling
reveille, assembly, officers call,
sick call, taps, and learned more
than 40 distinctive calls, contained
in the Drummers and Fifers Guide
by George B. Bruce and Daniel
D Emmett, to be used in battle.
Their music also provided a source
of entertainment for the troops, to
help with morale, as well as a festive flair for parades or regimental
reviews. But the most important
job for these young musicians was
to use their music to communicate
orders during battle. In the noise
and confusion it was often impossible to hear the officers orders.
The beats of the drum could carry
commands quicker than a mounted
courier, and farther and more clearly than the human voice.
The most exciting drum call was
the long roll, which was the signal to attack. The drummer would
just beat-beat-beat - and every other
drummer in hearing distance would
beat-beat-beat - until all that could
be heard was an overwhelming
thunder pushing the army forward.
The youngest drummer of the
Civil War is said to be Avery Brown
of Delphos, who enlisted at the ripe
old age of 8 years, 11months and 13
days. He lied and said he was 12.
On April 15, 1861, three days
after the bombardment of Fort
Sumter, an urgent call was made
for Union volunteers. Samuel Mott,
from Delphos, responded in August
with a group of men. They were
prepared to enlist, but only if one
provision was met. They insisted
Avery be allowed to accompany

them when they proceeded to Camp
Chase in Columbus.
Capt. Mott was a neighbor of
Browns and was reported to have
told Captain Stansbury, at the
recruiting station I have come here
with 101 men who are ready to
enlist on one condition that our
drummer-boy be mustered in with
us and permitted to go to the front.
Otherwise we disband right here
and return home. Avery, a young
kid who had so much patriotism
and desire to serve, had tried to
enlist twice before, but had been
denied until Captain Mott made his
ultimatum.
So on Aug. 18, 1861, the 4-foot,
6-inch, blue eyed, red-haired fatherless 8-year-old was mustered into
Company C, 31st Ohio Volunteer
Infantry, 1st Brigade, 3rd Division,
14th Army Corps.
Avery Brown was born 28
September 1852 to Avery and
Margaret Maria (Laha) (Doty)
Brown. His mother, a native of
France, was fourteen when she
came to America. She was united
in marriage on 15 August 1833
in Mumford, Monroe, New York
to Philander Doty. Philander was
a native of New York where he
owned a woolen mill. Three children were born in New York,
Antoinette, Nelson, and Francis.
The family headed west to La Salle,
Michigan where David Millroy
was born in 1840. Philander then
moved his family to Toledo where
he again pursued work in the woolen manufactory business. Here, two
sons, Peter and Charles were born.
Philander died circa 1847. After the
death of Mr. Doty Margaret married Avery Brown. In 1849 Avery
Brown took Margaret and her children to Dayton, staying there until
1852 when they came to Delphos,
where Avery Brown Jr. was born.
Its believed that Avery Brown Sr.
worked on the Miami & Erie Canal
from Delphos to Dayton. Its not
known when he died but it was
probably before 1860.
Margaret Brown, age 46, is listed
on the 1860 Federal Census living
in the town of Delphos, Van Wert

County, with three children Minna
[Doty] age 17, Charles [Doty] , 14,
and Avary [Brown] age 10.
Averys half brother Charles Doty
was also in Company C, 31st Ohio
Volunteer. Their unit was assimilated into the 118th Ohio Volunteer
Infantry, which Averys other half
brother David Millroy Doty had
joined as a Private and would rise
through the racks to Captain. Avery
served with the Delphos contingent on the front lines during some
of the bloodiest battles the 118th
fought. Avery was presented with
a captured Confederate drum at
Burtons Station, Va., an instrument he would carry through the
rest of his enlistment. It earned
him the title of Drummer Boy of
Cumberland.
Illness forced Avery to take a
honorable disability discharge on
26 January 1863, By the time of
his discharge, he had suffered from
mumps, measles and rheumatism,
the latter making it necessary for
him to quit the Army. Stoic in the
face of so much human suffering,
the young boy had tears in his eyes
as he left his company for the last
time
After his discharge, Brown
lived in Delphos for three years.
In 1866, Averys widowed mother moved her family to Elkhart
Indiana. where Avery worked with
his half-brother David M. Doty as
a stonecutter. During the next 25
years, Professor Brown organized bands throughout Indiana,
Michigan and Ohio, becoming one
of the Hoosier states best-known
solo cornet players.
Avery married Cynthia Van
Alstine, daughter of Adam and
Elizabeth Van Alstine on 4 Jan 1875
in Adrian, Lenawee. Cynthia was
born on 31 May 1842 in Hinsdale,
Michigan
Avery became close friends with
Charles Gerard Conn, who owned
the Elkhart-based Conn Musical
Instrument Company. Due to his
friendship with Conn, Avery would
test every new Conn cornet model
as it came out of the factory. He
also became a member of Conns

Veteran Light Artillery, the only
all-veteran company of its kind to be
formed following the war. In recognition of Avery Browns service to
his country, and as a tribute to their
friendship, Conn presented Avery
with a special gold-plated engraved
cornet, which became Averys
most cherished possession. Avery
and his wife, Cynthia, left Elkhart
during the 1890s to move to Texas,
Wisconsin, and then Michigan, but
they returned to Elkhart a few years
later, where he lived the remainder
of his years.
Avery Brown died at his Elkhart
home on 2 November 1904 and
is buried in Elkharts Grace Lawn
Cemetery where his tombstone
commemorates his distinction as

the Civil Wars youngest enlisted soldier. The Elkhart County
Historical Museum in Bristol,
Indiana, has an exhibit on him
including the captured Confederate
drum, his discharge papers and
an original tintype photograph of
the young Drummer Boy of the
Cumberland.
Cynthia (Van Alstine) Brown
died on 10 Oct 1930 in Elkhart,
Indiana. She was buried on 13
Oct 1930 in Gracelawn Cemetery,
Elkhart Indiana.
There is currently no proof that
Avery is indeed the youngest enlisted soldier in the Civil War, but
were still looking.

and now to New York City.
Pursuing these opportunities

going to school at the Fashion
Institute of Technology in
Manhattan.

Daughters of the Americas
spent an evening washing
eyeglasses for Volunteers
Optometric Services to
Humanity (VOSH). Among
those participating were Ann
Baldauf, Ruth Liebrecht,
Mary
Kill,
Catherine
Hammons, Marietta Morris,
Mary Lou Wittler and
Dorothy Metzger. Member
Darlene Pohlman and her
husband, Jim, are volunteers
for VOSH and spend time in
Central America.
Such is the flightiness soft
spring weather that you can
go from a warm and sunny
morning and early afternoon
to a cold, windy, blustery
late afternoon and evening.
Jefferson softball team suffered through a miserable
stretch as well, losing both
ends of a doubleheader 3-1
and 5-1 at Antwerp Friday.

Weber, Utah, has completed requirements for
a master of social science
degree in human resource
administration at Utah State
University. She is the daughter of John and Helen Stutz
of Venedocia, where she
attended Lincolnview High
School. She had served as
a girls basketball coach at
Jefferson High School.

part of their independent living class. In their study of

their artistic ability. Other

A Mass for new members at St. Josephs Catholic
Church, Fort Jennings, highlighted the meeting when the
Altar-Rosary Society met for
the 7 p.m. Mass. The group
then returned to the grade
school cafeteria for a lunch.
Hostesses were co-chairwomen Pat Glancy and
Teresa Murpy and their committee. New officers will be
installed at the next meeting

of Ann Oetzel and David
Zoll and installation of new

officers.
John Evans, an honor student at Gomer High School
and son of Mr. and Mrs. Jay
Evans, was selected by the
United Church of Christ in
Ohio to travel with some
50 other youths and several
adult advisers to England in
an interest of peace education and the study of international affairs. A junior at
Gomer High School, John
is an organist at St. Peter
Lutheran Church here in
Delphos.
A meeting of the Womans
Society of Christian Society
was held Wednesday afternoon in the parlors of
Trinity Methodist Church.
Following the business session, Beth Reed gave the
meditation and prayer. The
group entered the sanctuary
of the chapel to partake of
Holy Communion. The May

It seems if you look hard enough, just
about any food you once thought was
bad for you, has some redeeming quality. The Internet is full of sites touting the
health benefits of many of those foods
your mom told you were bad for you.
Chocolate can be a good thing. Dark
chocolate is said to lower high blood
pressure. But of course, theres a catch.
Eating more dark chocolate can help
lower blood pressure - if youve reached
a certain age and have mild high blood
pressure. You have to cut calories in
other areas to compensate, also. Dark
chocolate is also a potent antioxidant.
Antioxidants eat up free radicals that
cause heart disease and other problems.
The mommy mantra candy is bad
for your teeth is still true for the most
part, unless of course, youre eating
licorice. Compounds from the Chinese
herb Glycyrrhiza uralensis, which is
commonly referred to as licorice root or
Chinese licorice, make this chewy treat
effective in fighting the bacteria that
cause tooth decay.

dinner may not only prolong your life,
it may also help you look better while
yourre at it. It is reported to delay the
affects of aging. They tested it on fish
that only live for about nine days in
captivity. Seems the fish not only lived
longer, they remembered more and kept
their muscle tone. Wait a minute, Fish
have muscle tone? Do they go to some
type of aquatic gym? If they have to
swim a long time to get there, can they
skip the laps in the pool? And how do
you test a fishs memory?
And what about the incredible, edible egg? The egg once got the peel
potato for cholesterol. Now it seems
nutritionists were mistaken and the egg
is a nearly perfect food. Boiled, scrambled, poached - you name it - eggs are
now good for you. Its the butter on that
white toast thats gonna get you. The
OJ is perfectly OK as long as its low
sodium, contains added calcium and is
not from concentrate.
Coffee, it seems, is also good for
you, in moderation. According to recent

studies, moderate coffee drinking may
lower the risk of colon cancer by about
25 percent, gallstones by 45 percent,
cirrhosis of the liver by 80 percent and
Parkinsons disease by 50 percent to
as much as 80 percent. Other benefits
include 25 percent reduction in onset
of attacks among asthma sufferers and,
at least among a large group of female
nurses tracked over many years, fewer
suicides. They always have to throw
some whacked out find in there. Maybe
they should check what the ones who do
commit suicide were drinking.
In addition, some studies have indicated that coffee contains four times the
amount of cancer-fighting anti-oxidants
as green tea. Now that might be helpful
if its true.
I cant wait until they find out the
health benefits of cheese cake and snickerdoodles. How about someone finding
out something good about fried chicken
and mashed potatoes and gravy?
A fable tells that Wind and

Sun once had a bet going. The

up since all of the blowing and

moment. We are taking our
jackets off. And as Sun looks

In the Sunday pews I heard that Saturdays strong gusts
snapped power poles in Hancock County. Since this is not a
news article, I did not drive east to confirm this nor to photograph. But since I walked uphill against Wind that day with a
troop of Girl Scouts from Miller City, with snow driving into
our eyes and up our noses, Ill take the congregant at his word.
That and the fact that an enclosed trampoline is standing,
upside-down, in the Riley Creek floodplain.
We walked our Sunday afternoon hike. Although Wind was
negligible in the morning, it was working itself into a tantrum
by 4 p.m. when we ducked into the woods. Inside the shelter
of trees, Sun warmed our muscles. I didnt go so far as to take
off my wool coat, but I did unbutton it all the way.
At the moment, Wind is sleeping. There are tiny flakes of
snow falling, but they are descending vertically instead of
running parallel to the ground. I will say this for Wind: the
ground is much more pleasant to walk on after Wind has had
its way with mud.

The following is a weekly report concerning construction and maintenance work on
state highways within the Ohio
Department of Transportation
District 1. For the latest in statewide construction, visit www.

Week of April 11
Allen County
Interstate 75 from the
Auglaize County line to
Fourth Street, through
Lima and Allen County, will
have occasional lane closures
throughout the year during the
final year of the reconstruction of the interstate. Current
impacts to traffic are as follows:
Traffic on I-75 north
and south of the Ohio 65 interchange area continues to travel
in a contraflow pattern where
two southbound lanes and one
northbound lane of traffic are
traveling on the southbound
side of the interstate, and one
northbound lane is traveling on
the northbound side of the interstate. Traffic will remain in this
pattern until late summer.
On Tuesday, April 12, the
single, northbound lane through
the Ohio 65 interchange area
will be closed during pouring
of the concrete bridge deck over
the railroad just east (north) of
Ohio 65.
The lane closure will
require the closure of the
exit ramp from northbound
Interstate 75 to Ohio 65. Traffic
during the ramp closure will be
detoured to Fourth Street to I-75

southbound back to Ohio 65.
The entrance ramp from
Ohio 65 to Interstate 75 northbound remains closed. Traffic
is detoured north on Ohio 65
to the Fourth Street interchange
back to I-75 northbound. The
ramp is expected to reopen by
the end of May.
Interstate 75 from Fourth
Street to Ohio 81 will be
reduced to one lane, both northbound and southbound, one
direction at a time, on April
18 and 19 for pavement warranty review. The restriction
will begin each day at 8 a.m.
and conclude by 2 p.m. Work
is being performed by ODOT
District 1 construction.
Ohio 117 from Bowman
Road to the Auglaize County
line will be restricted to one
lane through the work zone for
pavement repair. Work is being
performed by the ODOT Allen
County maintenance garage.
Ohio 501 from the
Auglaize County line to Ohio
117 will be restricted to one
lane through the work zone for
pavement repair. Work is being
performed by the ODOT Allen
County maintenance garage.
Ohio 309 (Elida Road)
from Robb Avenue to Cole
Street, Lima, is restricted in
the westbound direction for
reconstruction of the curb and
gutter, upgrade of traffic signals and resurfacing of the
roadway. The continuous turn
from eastbound Ohio 309 to
Grand Avenue was permanent-

Tyler Pessefall, 18, Van Wert, entered not

guilty pleas to breaking and entering, a felony
5; and vandalism, also a felony 5. He was
released on a surety bond with condition of
no contact with victim or his property. Pretrial
set for April 20.
Douglas Billingham, 18, Van Wert,
entered not guilty pleas to breaking and entering, a felony 5; and vandalism, also a felony 5.

Changes of pleas
Sean Ramos, 22, Van Wert, changed his
plea to guilty to domestic violence, misdemeanor 1 (reduced from domestic violence,
felony 4), The court ordered a pre-sentence
ly closed on March 14. Three

lanes of traffic will remain open
at all times throughout the duration of the project. Only one
lane at a time will be taken out
of service. Within the next two
weeks, traffic will be restricted
in the eastbound direction. The
project will be completed in the
fall. Work is being performed
by Smith Paving, Norwalk.
Putnam County
Ohio 696 between the
Allen County line and Ohio
12 will be restricted for sealing
of pavement cracks. Work is
being performed by the Putnam
County ODOT maintenance
garage.
Van Wert County
U.S. 127 (Washington
Street) between Fox Road
and Ervin Road in the city of
Van Wert will close Monday
for reconstruction and widening of the road. Access to local
businesses will be maintained.
Traffic will be detoured onto
Ohio 81, Ohio 118, Ervin Road/
Van Wert-Decatur Road, U.S.
224 and U.S. 30 back to U.S.
127. The closure will remain in
place until fall. Work is being
performed by Helms & Sons
Excavating, Findlay.
U.S. 30, both directions,
west of the city of Van Wert
will be reduced to one lane
through the work zone for sealing of pavement cracks. Work is
being performed by the ODOT
Van Wert County maintenance
garage.

Kitti Johnson, 28, Convoy, admitted to
violating her Treatment in Lieu program by
failing to complete counseling at Westwood.
The court set the matter for sentencing on
May 11.

Al Bigelow, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Amos Bigelow of
Delphos, will again manage
Sams Club in the Detroit
Baseball Federation. The
Detroit Sunday Times considers Bigelow one of the
best handlers of players
on the sandlots. Bigelow
is a member of the Detroit
police force and is well
known here.
A joint meeting of the
Ada and Delphos Kiwanis
clubs was held at Ada
Tuesday evening. The
division visitation banner
which is being passed from

club to club in a series
of inter-club meetings
and which was brought to
Delphos last week by the
Celina club was presented to the Ada club by Ed
Falke.
Mrs. O. M. Arnold
was the leader at the regular meeting of the Beta
Delphian chapter held in
the office of the Ohio Power
Company Tuesday evening.

Ag is Cool! entries, which can include
an original video, photograph, drawing, or
painting, will be judged in the following
age categories. One winner from each age
group and category will be chosen:

may include representatives from the Ohio

reflects 21st-century agriculture, creativity
and use of Ohio images, and quality of
work.
Winners of the art contest will be recognized by the Office of the Governor and
other state officials at the Ohio State Fair
on July 27.

Wheat

3) Canada thistle can suppress wheat growth due to its

patches. Most wheat herbi-
cides have some activity on

thistle, if not applied too early
in spring.
4) Summer annual broadleaf weeds, such as common
and giant ragweed, which
can begin to emerge in late
March. A healthy wheat crop
can adequately suppress these
weeds, but herbicide application is occasionally warranted.
5) The weeds that appear
above the wheat canopy late

in the season, such as ragweeds and Canada thistle,
can often be easily controlled
with a spring herbicide treatment.

Although he received two consecutive
life sentences, a 5- to 15-year sentence and
a pair of 6-month to 5-year prison terms,
Bender will continue to receive parole
hearings. On Friday, the board could not
come to an agreement on the time frame
until his next appeal. The decision will be
moved up to the full parole board and the
next hearing could be in as little as one
year or up to 10 years from now.
Now we could be back here trying to
keep him locked up in as little as a year,
Evans said.Its hard. Its hard for everyone.
Petitions to keep Bender in prison for

life circulated through the city of Delphos
earlier this year and hundreds used the
website blockparole.com to sign a petition
and send letters opposing Benders release.
After killing the Younpeters and severely wounding another, Bender managed to
elude authorities around Delphos, head
for Lima, then south toward Dayton. His
crime spree continued for about two weeks
before he was captured in Whitewater,
Wisconsin.
Bender, a native of Columbus Grove,
is now 61 and serving his sentence in the
Madison Correctional Facility in London,
Ohio.
Turkey
In 1956 and continuing to 1963, wild

turkeys from other states were transported
and released in Ohio, an operation that was
ultimately successful. It was estimated that by
1988 there were 28,000 turkeys gobbling their
way around Ohio.
Compare that to the 2013 estimate of
180,000 with an even denser population
expected in following years. The bird is now
found in all 88 Ohio counties. The turkey
repopulation is a gift to hunters and just plain
old wildlife enthusiasts from Mother Nature.
The ODNR Division of Wildlife deserves a
nod because they spearheaded the repopulation project. The more heavily forested land
of the southern and eastern counties are more
turkey friendly than counties in the north and
west and hunters have better luck bagging
a bird in the forested counties. But there
are some turkeys in the north and west, but
hunters and fans will just have to use more
patience.
Buening said the turkey population in Van
Wert County isnt very great and consequently there are fewer turkey hunters but it was
likely that Defiance and Williams counties
saw more hunters because the habitat there
was better for the birds.
In Van Wert County we get a few hunters.
And close to 30 turkeys were harvested in the
county (2015). Compared to other counties
thats kinda low; we dont have a huge turkey
population in Van Wert County, he said.
The days of musty card catalogues are gone. Patrons now

log on to a computer, look up
materials and head to the racks
or stacks. Of course a librarian
is always on hand to give that
personal touch and guidance.
Like everyone else, the
library strives to keep up
with the newest technology
to provide their patrons with
as many services as possible. On Monday and Tuesday,
the librarys card catalogue
and circulation system will
become cloud-based, freeing
up server space and those who
maintain them.
Now all our information
will be in the cloud instead
of on a server somewhere in
southern Ohio, Rist said.
Weve had some problems
with productivity because of a
glitch on a server hundreds of
miles away. They are also in a
very rustic part of Ohio.
On Monday and Tuesday,
patrons will be still be able
to check in and out materials
but will not be able to place
anything on hold.
We can take down the
information and key that in
once the process is complete,
Rist said.
As in the past, the library

will also accept non-perishable items for the local food
pantries in place of paying
fines for overdue materials. The library also collects
items on the first Friday of
each month and throughout
the months of November and
December.
We take more than a ton
of food to the St. Vincent de
Paul and Interfaith Thrift Shop
food pantries a year between
all the food drives we have,
Rist said. We are transforming our community, too.

Youth ages 4-7 are
invited to come try their Fort
Building skills from 4-5 p.m.
on Wednesday. Then from 5-7
p.m., the library is delighted
to have Mark Finley offer a
book signing of Queen City
Dynasty: Cincinnatis Big Red

Machine. The book chronicles the 1975 and 1976 World
Champion Cincinnati Reds
teams. Notably, the book contains a story on each and every
player who was part of these
two teams, including manager Sparky Anderson and his
coaches.
Preschool story time
will also be held at 6:30 p.m.
on Thursday.
The week will finish
with a Lego Saturday from
10-11:30 a.m. for our families to enjoy transforming the
Lego blocks into many amazing items.
There will also be giveaways during the week
Service to the community
has always been the focus of
the library. Libraries are many
things to many people. They
work with elected officials,
small business owners, students and the public at large
to discover and address the
needs of their communities.
Whether through offering
e-books and technology classes, programs for job seekers
or offering a safe haven in
times of crisis, libraries and
librarians listen to the community they serve and they
respond.

Like any wildlife hunting season, rules do

apply. Buening noted a few of the regulations
such as the need for a valid Ohio hunting
license and a spring turkey permit, and they
can only take one turkey per day with a limit
of two per season. He stressed that baiting is
not allowed.
They cant bait turkeys. Theres a few that
do and we do monitor that to enforce those
laws for people hunting turkey, he said.
Buening said hunters can use a shotgun,
longbow or crossbow to turkey hunt. There
are more hunters that use guns versus bows as
bow hunting is more challenging.
Turkey flight is very good, he said, and
they pick up any movement. Theres a lot
more movement with a bow.
If a hunter bags a turkey they must immediately tag it with their name, date, time and
county of kill, attach the tag to the turkey
where it fell. They must also complete a
permit with date, time and county of kill and
check it in by 11:30 p.m. of the same day.
Please be careful, accidents can and do
happen. Wear orange hunting vests, use caution when using a turkey call and perhaps
attend a Division of Wildlife hunter education
