This course has the purpose to provide the necessary electromagnetic background for the
other courses concerning the optical and radiowave transmission channels; it will recall
fundamentals and bridge the gap towards the applications in the ensuing courses.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge of
methods to assess wanted and unwanted radiation of electromagnetic fields;
the main classes of antennas currently in use in relevant wireless systems;
basics of radiated susceptibility (EMC).
Knowledge and ability to understand regulations and recommendations for exposure to
(non-ionizing) electromagnetic radiation.
Ability to
understand the requirements of antennas in relevant wireless systems;
carry out basic design of some relevant antenna types;
assess EMC issues for some relevant classes of configurations.

Prerequisites:
Perspective students are supposed to have already taken a course on basic electromagnetic
theory, as
Maxwell equations
The electromagnetics of circuits
Transmission lines
All courses of Mathematics, Physics (especially Electromagnetism), Circuit theory, and relevant
prerequisites.

Lectures/labs
1. Lectures and exercises/seminars on the content of the lectures.
Home assignments at the end of basic blocks. Exercises are required to be solved at
home, and delivered in written form in 1 week time (usually). These exercises (around
40) are then solved and discussed in the class.
2. Laboratory activity
Lectures and exercises/seminars on the content of the lectures;
measurement of the of radiation characteristics of antennas (radiation pattern and
gain) (planned).
measurements on EMC between 2 microstrip lines (planned)
Laboratory activity is carried out autonomously by small teams under the supervision of a tutor.

Delivery modes
A key component of the learning activity are:
problem-solving classes
and
home assignments.
Measurement laboratory sessions are planned for about 3h (short written reports - team work)
Optional lab. on special projects.
Texts, readings, handouts and other learning resources
The learning will be supported by handouts/notes made available by the instructor.
A bibliography of useful reference textbooks (not necessary for course activity, only to probe
further) will be also made available on the web portal.
