Glory! Glory! Glory!
T he Easter liturgy gladdens
our hearts once more with
the singing of the “Alleluia,” and
the restoration of the “Gloria in
excelsis Deo.” Both are prescribed
as two details that are to be strictly
omitted during the 40-day, five-
week of ficial rites of Lent and
Holy Week. As a presider during
several Eucharistic liturgies for
the Easter Vigil, I personally love
the moment when, before the
Gospel proclamation, the “Glory
to God” is intoned to the ringing
of the bells, and then in lieu of the
Responsorial Psalm the threefold
“Alleluia” is sung with its age-old
melody! Easter is indeed ceremo-
nially glorious!
Glory is God’s; God is glorified.
This is the resounding affirmation
that is repeated fourfold in our
shor t Gospel proclamation
excerpted from the opening
of Jesus’ farewell discourse in
John. Contemplated within our
seven-week liturgy of Easter,
the proclamation underlines
what the 1997 Catechism of the
Catholic Church (nn. 648-649)
teaches: that the great myster y
of the Resur rection of Jesus,
one that is beyond our normal
human experience to comprehend
since none of us have had this
experience, shows forth the power
of the Divine Trinity at work. The
heavenly Father is at work in
“raising up” Jesus his Son, thereby
bestowing upon the mission of
Jesus his seal of approval. Jesus the
Son effects his own resurrection
by virtue of his divine power, as
he has announced several times
during the course of his earthly
preaching (cf. Mk 8:31; 9:9-31;
10:34). The manifestation of God’s
power in the Resurrection of Jesus
is, of course, through the ministry

5th Sunday of Easter (C) — White
of the Holy Spirit (cf. 2 Cor 13:4;
Rom 8:11). Easter is then not just
a Christological festival, but a
feast to the victory of the whole
Godhead. The work of the evil one
who destroyed the paradise that
the Father created in his Spirit as
a gift to the Son, is now definitively
defeated!
Since the Trinity of the Divine
Persons is not just alive and mov-
ing among themselves, but their
life and operations do affect us—
hence we can rightly speak about
the divine action as an “economy
of grace and salvation”—the glory
of God that is celebrated with the
rising of Jesus from the darkness
of the grave also manifests itself
among us! The liturgical lessons
make us reflect on this:
1. The Glory of God in the
Risen Christ is the source of
the dynamo and triumph of
the Church in mission. In the
First Reading (Acts 14), we hear
how Paul and Barnabas reported
about the powerful result of their
preaching of the Easter faith during
their first missionary journey. The
power of God’s message made
even the non-Jews receptive.
Communities of believers began
to be formed in Asia Minor (now
Turkey) beyond the boundaries
of Palestine.
2. The Glory of God in the
Risen Christ is our sure hope
about the future. We wallow in a
world of progressively depressing
experiences: political turmoil,
elusive peacemaking among
warring groups, moral decadence
that continues to weaken marriage
and family life, growth of relativism
in faith and in the standards of
righteousness, scandals that affect
high places of both the Church
and the State. We cannot help

but ask—What kind of earth will
the next generation have? The
Second Reading (Rv 21) clearly
and certainly states: “a new heaven
and a new earth.” The power of
God that revealed itself in Jesus’
new life should make us hear the
thunderous words from the divine
throne: “Behold, I make all things
new.”
3. The Glory of God in the
Risen Christ should make us
embrace the way of love as a
way of life. In the midst of the
pain and violence of the crucifixion
that highlighted the peak of the
human ability to be cruel, Jesus
was consistent with his love. The
various Gospel accounts of the
Passion make us appreciate until
now how Jesus’ forgiving words,
his compassionate gestures, and
gentle composure contrasted with
the force of evil that was unleashed
against him from Gethsemane to
Calvary. The Risen Jesus showing
forth his wounded hands and side
during his numerous appearances,
makes us realize: love triumphs!
So now, our Gospel dramatically
summarizes: “This is how all will
know that you are my disciples, if
you love… love one another.”
Throughout Easter, let us then
sing and shout: “Glory to God in
the highest…” This is but liturgi-
cally and theologically right and
proper. But let us also remember
the next line: “Peace to his people
on earth.” Easter—the triumph
of the glory of God, the victory of
love over cruelty, the conquest of
good over evil—should be lived by
all of us who have been baptized
in the Risen Jesus. This should be
the mark of our life’s journey from
Sunday to Sunday.

First Reading (Sit)
Luke describes the end of the first
missionary journey of Paul and
Barnabas. The apostles appoint
leaders for the young Christian
communities and exhort the con-
verts to persevere in faith. The
seed of the Word that they planted
now start to grow to maturity.
A reading from the Acts of
the Apostles (14:21-27)
AFTER PAUL and Barnabas
had proclaimed the good news
to that city and made a con-
siderable number of disciples,
they returned to L ystra and
to Iconium and to Antioch.
They strengthened the spirits
of the disciples and exhorted
them to persevere in the faith,
saying, “It is necessary for us
to undergo many hardships
to enter the kingdom of God.”
They appointed elders for them
in each church and, with prayer
and fasting, commended them
to the Lord in whom they had
put their faith.
Then they traveled through
Pisidia and reached Pamphylia.
After proclaiming the word at
Perga they went down to At-
talia. From there they sailed to
Antioch, where they had been
commended to the grace of
God for the work they had now
accomplished.
And when they arrived, they
called the church together and
reported what God had done
with them and how he had
opened the door of faith to the
Gentiles.

Profession of Faith (Stand)
All — I believe in God, the
Father Almighty, Creator of
heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his
only Son, our Lord. He was con­

Mar y. He suffered under Pon­
tius Pilate, was crucified, died,
and was buried. He descended
to the dead. On the third day,

Candles in the Eucharist
During the celebration of the Eucharist, candles are lighted near the
altar. It is a custom that started probably during the eleventh century.
During the entrance rite, the entrance of the bishop or the presider of
the celebration is accompanied by lighted candles as a sign of respect.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) underlines the
significance of the lighted candles during the celebration of the Eucha-
rist: “The candles, which are required at every liturgical service out of
reverence and on account of the festiveness of the celebration, are to
be appropriately placed either on or around the altar in a way suited to
the design of the altar and the sanctuary so that the whole may be well
balanced and not interfere with the faithful’s clear view of what takes
place at the altar or what is placed on it” (GIRM 307).
As in a table wherein it is celebrated something that is festive or
solemn, the candles, more than its aesthetic purpose, can remind the as-
sembly of the profound mystery that is happening between Christ and the
community who believes in him and welcomes him fully and with love.
