HEMAN QUARTET HISTORY (BIO)
In the summer of 1952, Julio Soria, a young seminary student at the former SpanishAmerican Baptist Seminary of Los Angeles, acted on an idea: to form a Spanish gospel
singing quartet to spread the good news of Christ to the Spanish-speaking world.
The idea took root and by the fall of 52 became known as the Cuarteto Hemn or Hemn
Quartet which featured the voices of Julio Soria, Joe Arellano, Johnny Martinez and William
Angulo with Socorro Soria, pianist.
The name Hemn was chosen after a city-wide contest was held among many churches
to find the best name for the quartet. The prize-winning entry was made by the late
Reverend Dr. Jos Arregun, professor of theology and quartet mentor. Hemn was the
name of one of the directors of music in King Solomons Temple (I Chronicles 25:1-6). The
name was selected because it is scriptural; it is related to sacred music and it is short and
spelled the same in English or Spanish.
In its over 40 years of ministry, the Cuarteto Heman underwent various changes of
personnel. However, the combination that established the quartet as a serious ministry in
1953 in the area of radio, recording and evangelistic campaigns, were the voices of Julio
Soria, William Angulo, Gilbert Rodrguez and Robert Mendoza. Other members that
participated afterward long term were Efran Frank Zavala, and Sstenes Sam
Valenzuela who maintained the quartets high level of musical professionalism and
eventually came to be recognized as the Ambassadors of Spanish Hymnology.
These pioneers ventured into areas of ministry that were unheard of in those early years.
Belonging to various churches of differing doctrinal backgrounds, they set aside
denominational doctrine to emphasize the gospel message of redemption through Jesus
Christ in their song and testimony.
At first, the quartet began recording on a small home type reel-to-reel tape recorder and
rehearsed in private homes. Then, with the support of El Silo Presbyterian Church in East
Los Angeles, they were able to convert an old shed on church property into their very first

recording studio. Quartet members paid for the materials and provided the labor
themselves.
With their new studio the Hemn Quartet was now able to initiate their tape ministry and in
1955 with the Rev. Fidel Zamorano, they began to record a 30 minute gospel radio program
known as A La Sombra de la Cruz (Neath the Shadow of the Cross) under their non-profit
organization, Difusiones Evanglicas, Inc. The program began with broadcasts over KWKW
and KALI Spanish radio in the Los Angeles area as well as six different radio stations
across Central America.
Through the years, the quartet offered copies of their tape-recorded library of more that 500
gospel songs free of charge to any gospel radio program anywhere in the Spanishspeaking world. It was through these radio broadcasts that the Hemn Quartets music
ministry gained world-wide recognition including: North America, Central America, South
America, North Africa, parts of Europe, the Philippine Islands and the Caribbean.
It was said that on any given Sunday, the quartets music could be heard on over 500 radio
programs around the world in Spanish.
The Heman Quartet also toured extensively, appearing personally in evangelistic
campaigns in Mxico, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Spain and
many US cities with large Hispanic populations. Whether appearing before thousands or
small church congregations, they never charged a fee for their ministry, always accepting
calls on a love offering basis.
The goal of the Hemn Quartet was always to present the Gospel of Christ though song
and the spoken word. God opened doors of opportunity early on when they were invited by
Alma Records (Christian Faith label) to record three record albums. During their 40 years
plus ministry, they appeared on many Christian television programs, recorded eight record
albums and eight audio-cassettes. In 1983, the Hemn Quartet was recognized by the
National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) with the Hispanic Broadcasters Award for their
Pioneering, Singing, Recording, Promoting and Broadcasting of the Gospel through Music
to the Hispanic World.
The ministry of the Hemn Quartet was not funded by any single denomination, church,
organization or individual. It was always a faith work that depended on the gifts and
offerings of Gods people and also donations from quartet members themselves who
dedicated their lives and individual talent to the Great Commission of Christ while
continuing to work full-time in their respective jobs to see this ministry through. It was done
a little at a time and the Lord supplied.

THE HEMAN QUARTET RESTORATION PROJECT

Even though the Hemn Quartet is no longer active, with several members having left this
earth to be with the Lord, their music remains with us, still capable of delivering a message
of hope to the Spanish-speaking world. It is now more relevant than ever in our turbulent
times. As we forge ahead into the 21 Century, a new generation of Spanish-speaking
people, is hungry to hear the unique sound of the Hemn Quartet.
The miracle of the digital age has now made it possible for the gospel message and music
of the Hemn Quartet to be made available to the world in an instant. Recently, while
navigating the internet, we discovered several unofficial YouTube sites featuring Hemn
Quartet recordings and even offering mp3 downloadable selections. These are poor quality
copies taken directly from cassettes and albums.
Even though it is a blessing to know that people somewhere are making an effort to share
this beautiful music, we, as quartet family members, feel that something should be done to
preserve the integrity of the Hemn Quartets music for future generations. We believe we
have a responsibility to the many years of artistic excellence that the quartet continually
strived for and dedicated to the ministry of the Lord in song. Thus, the families of the
quartet have begun the arduous and costly process of preserving original recordings in a
digital format thereby enhancing the quality and richness of the original tapes and saving
this ageless music from the ravages of time.

HISTORIA DE CUARTETO HEMAN (BIO)
En el verano de 1952, Julio Soria, estudiante joven del seminario en la antigua
hispanoamericana Bautista Seminario de Los Angeles, actu en una idea: para formar un
cuarteto de canto gospel espaol para difundir la buena noticia de Cristo para el mundo de
habla hispana.
La idea ech races y por la cada de 52 lleg a ser conocida como el Cuarteto Hemn
cuarteto Hemn que cont con las voces de Julio Soria, Joe Arellano, Johnny Martnez y
William Angulo con Socorro Soria, pianista.
El nombre "Hemn" fue elegido despus de un concurso de toda la ciudad se llev a cabo
entre muchas iglesias a encontrar el mejor nombre para el cuarteto. La entrada ganadora
del premio fue realizada por el Reverendo Dr. finales Jos Arregun, profesor de teologa y
cuarteto de mentor. Hemn era el nombre de uno de los directores de la msica en el
templo de Rey Solomon (crnicas 25: 1-6). El nombre fue elegido porque es bblico; est
relacionado con la msica sacra y es corto y escribe igual en ingls o espaol.
En sus ms de 40 aos de Ministerio, el Cuarteto Heman experiment varios cambios de
personal. Sin embargo, la combinacin que estableci el cuarteto como un Ministerio serio
en 1953 en el rea de radio, grabacin y campaas evangelsticas, fueron las voces de
Julio Soria, William Angulo, Gilbert Rodrguez y Roberto Mendoza. Otros miembros que
participaron despus a largo plazo fueron Efran "Frank" Zavala y Sstenes "Sam"
Valenzuela, quien mantuvo el alto nivel del cuarteto de profesionalismo musical y
eventualmente llegaron a ser reconocidos como los "embajadores de la himnologa

primeros aos. Pertenecientes a varias iglesias de diferentes orgenes doctrinales, apartar

A travs de los aos, el cuarteto ofreci copias de su biblioteca sembrados de ms que
500 canciones del evangelio gratuitamente a cualquier programa de radio del Evangelio en
el mundo de habla hispana. Fue a travs de estas emisoras de radio que el ministerio
musical del cuarteto Hemn ganado reconocimiento mundial como: Amrica del norte,
Amrica Central, Amrica del sur, frica del norte, partes de Europa, las Islas Filipinas y el
Caribe.
Se deca que el cualquier domingo dado, se oa msica de cuarteto en ms de 500
programas de radio del mundo en espaol.
El cuarteto Heman tambin recorri extensivamente, apareciendo personalmente en
campaas evangelsticas en Mxico, Colombia, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Puerto
Rico, Espaa y muchas ciudades de Estados Unidos con grandes poblaciones
hispanas. Si compareciendo ante miles o pequeas iglesia congregaciones, nunca cargar
un honorario para su Ministerio, siempre aceptando llamadas basndose en la "ofrenda de
amor".
El objetivo del cuarteto Hemn era siempre presentar el Evangelio de Cristo aunque la
cancin y la palabra hablada. Dios abrieron puertas de oportunidad desde el principio
cuando fueron invitados por Alma Records (sello de Christian Faith) para grabar tres
lbumes de registro. Durante su Ministerio de 40 aos, aparecieron en muchos programas
de televisin cristiana, grab ocho discos rcord y ocho casetes de audio. En 1983, el
cuarteto Hemn fue reconocido por locutores religiosos nacionales (NRB) con la concesin
de las emisoras hispanas por su pionera, cantando, grabacin, promocin y difusin del
Evangelio a travs de la msica para el mundo hispano".
El Ministerio del cuarteto Hemn no fue financiado por ninguna sola denominacin, iglesia,
organizacin o individuo. Siempre fue una obra de fe que dependa de los dones y
ofrendas del pueblo de Dios y tambin de donaciones de miembros del cuarteto se que

dedican su vida y su talento individual a la gran Comisin de Cristo sin dejar de trabajar a
tiempo completo en sus respectivos puestos de trabajo ver este Ministerio a travs de. Fue
hecho un poco a la vez y el Seor proporcionado.

EL PROYECTO DE RESTAURACIN DEL CUARTETO HEMAN

A pesar de que el cuarteto Hemn ya no est activo, con varios miembros despus de
haber dejado esta tierra para estar con el Seor, su msica sigue con nosotros, siendo
capaz de entregar un mensaje de esperanza para el mundo de habla hispana. Ahora es
ms relevante que nunca en nuestros tiempos turbulentos. Como avanzar en el siglo 21,
una nueva generacin de personas de habla hispana, es hambre de or el sonido nico del
cuarteto Hemn.
El milagro de la era digital ahora ha hecho posible que el mensaje del Evangelio y la
msica del cuarteto Hemn hacerse disponible al mundo en un instante. Recientemente,
mientras que navegando por internet, hemos descubierto varios sitios de YouTube no
oficiales con grabaciones del cuarteto Hemn e incluso ofreciendo selecciones para
descargar mp3. Estas son copias de mala calidad tomadas directamente de los casetes y
discos.
Aunque es una bendicin saber que la gente en alguna parte est haciendo un esfuerzo
por compartir esta hermosa msica, nosotros, como miembros de la familia Cuarteto,
sentimos que algo debe hacerse para preservar la integridad de la msica del cuarteto
Hemn para las generaciones futuras. Creemos que tenemos la responsabilidad de
muchos aos de excelencia artstica que el cuarteto continuamente esforzado para y
dedicado al Ministerio del Seor en la cancin. As, las familias del cuarteto han
comenzado el arduo y costoso proceso de preservacin de grabaciones originales en
formato digital, aumentando as la calidad y la riqueza de las cintas originales y el ahorro
esta msica eterna de los estragos del tiempo.
