CalendarGrand Knight’s Report
I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and is having a joyous Easter season. It’s hard to believe
that Easter was nearly a month ago. We’ve had our April showers, the lawns are greening, the flowers
are blooming, and the trees are sprouting new leaves. It’s spring. In the spring a young man's fancy
lightly turns to thoughts of baseball – Go Sox! Go Cubs! (My apologies to Alfred Lord Tennyson.)

It’s been another busy month for our council. I want to thank Stewart Tesnow, Sr.’s
granddaughter and everyone else who helped with our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Holy Saturday,
Chairman Jim Hoffman and Lou Akins for our annual retreat at Bellarmine Retreat House the weekend
of April 9 – 11, MH Drive co-chairmen Bernie Bojarski and Bob Brown and cooking chairman Jim Baur
and the rest of the crew who assisted with our MH Dinner and donation presentations on April 16, and
Chairman Greg Korney, Deacon John Breit and all who helped make our Communion Breakfast held on
April 25 at St. Thomas a success.

Congratulations to our four new Sir Knights who took their Fourth Degree during the
exemplification at the Marriott Lincolnshire Resort on April 17: Nick Galiardo, Tom Finn, John Gerdes,
and Shawn Smith.

Our Financial Secretary, Stewart Tesnow, Sr., and our Deputy Grand Knight, Jim Ciciora, will
represent our council at the Knights of Columbus Illinois State Convention in Peoria the weekend of April
30 through May 2. I wish them a safe trip.

We did a great job recruiting new members in the first half of the year, but we have run out of
gas so far in the second half. We have a membership drive scheduled at St. Thomas the weekend of May
1 – 2 and one scheduled at St. Theresa the weekend of May 15 –16. We need several more new members
to meet our membership goal. More importantly, we need new members to bring fresh ideas to help keep
our council relevant and to carry on the work of the Knights of Columbus.

Our next business meeting will be on May 10 at St. Thomas. We will meet in the school hall, which
is in the basement. Note that this is a change from our schedule. We had planned to meet at St. Theresa
in May. However, I was notified that was a conflict with the Lower Dolan Center. I hope to see everyone
at our business meeting on May 10.

God Bless
Jim Killigrew, Grand Knight

Awards and Recognition

Knight of the Month Family of the month Very Important Proposer

John Scapin and Jim Killigrew Jim Arns and Jim Killigrew Jim Killigrew and Jack Landers

John Scapin is our Knight of the Month. Printing and postage is the largest expense incurred by
our council. Working behind the scenes John has spent a significant amount of time throughout the year
working on ways to keep our printing costs down. The less we spend on printing and postage, the more we
can put towards charitable causes. Thanks, John!

Our family of the Month award goes to Jim and Mary Lou Arns. Jim and Mary Lou assisted with
all three Lenten Fish Frys and the Pancake Breakfast. They always there until the bitter end helping
with the clean up tasks. Thanks to their help we always left the facilities as clean or cleaner than they
were when we arrived. Thanks Jim and mary Lou!

Congratulations to Jack Landers who was presented a Very Important Proposer (VIP) certificate
for recruiting five (5) new members.

the April business meeting. Deacon John and Bruce took their Fourth Degree on February 22.

Congratulations to all of our Award and Recognition recipients.

Congratulation to our new Sir Knights who took their Fourth Degree Exemplification on Saturday,
April 17 at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort: Nick Galiardo, Tom Finn, John Gerdes, and Shawn
Smith.

The Fourth Degree is the visible sign of the order. The next Fourth Degree Exemplification will
be in October in Crystal Lake. If you are interested in becoming a Sir Knight, please contact Jack

Easter Egg Hunt

We held our annual Easter Egg Hunt for children ages 10 and under from St. Theresa and St.
Thomas Parishes on Holy Saturday. After over 1200 eggs were found on the St. Theresa grounds, the
kids had a chance to have their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny and enjoy a snack and a drink in the
Lower Dolan Center. Special Thanks goes to Stewart Tesnow, Sr.’s granddaughter for again agreeing to
be our Easter Bunny. Thanks also to all the Knights who assisted with the event including Steve Amidei,
Jim Ciciora, Norm Englbrecth, Ron Klezek, Brian Lara, Ron Sowizrol, and Rudy Vergin. (Note: someone
finally took a picture of my better side.)

Bellarmine Retreat Weekend
Our annual silent retreat was held on April 9 – 11 at the Bellarmine Retreat House in
Barrington. Thanks to Jim Hoffman and Lou Akins for organizing this event. Make plans to attend next
year’s retreat, which is being planned for April 2011. For more information you can visit Bellarmine’s
website at www.bellarminehall.org.

MH Appreciation Dinner
Our MH Dinner was held on Friday, April 16. After sharing a sumptuous dinner prepared by Jim
Baur and his cooking crew, presentations were made to the organizations that received the proceeds
from this year’s drive. MH Drive co-chairmen Bob Brown and Bernie Bojarski served as emcees for the
evening. Bernie once again dazzled us with little know facts about the drive and Tootsie Rolls. I hope to
have pictures form the evening for the next issue of the Knightly News.

Communion Breakfast
On April 25, 37 Knights and their families attended the 9:30 AM Mass at St.
Thomas celebrated by Fr. Tom. Following Mass we shared a catered breakfast. Thanks to
chairman Greg Korney and assistant Deacon John Breit for all their hard work in
organizing and conducting this event. During the breakfast we presented a check for
$550 to Fr. Tom. Fr. Tom donated several sets of Cubs tickets that were raffled off at
our March business meeting, our Pancake Breakfast on March 14, and the Lenten Fish Fry on March 19.
In addition, we were fortunate to have other Cubs tickets donated. The raffles raised approximately
$550.

Four Winds Casino Trip

On Wednesday, April 28, 2 busloads of gamblers left Palatine at 7:30 AM for a day of fun at Four

most sought after slots ranging in denominations from .01 to $100.00 and exciting table games;
Blackjack, Craps, Baccarat, Pai Gow™ Poker, Three and Four Card Poker. They left the casino at 2:30 PM
with their winnings (or losses). Thanks to Lou and Mary Kittler for organizing this trip.

The next meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary will be held on Tuesday, May 11th at 7:00 PM.

The Ladies Auxiliary will be having a breakfast fundraiser at St. Thomas on Sunday, June 27.
They have asked the Knights to do the cooking for them. When we discussed this topic at our April
business meeting, the date was Sunday, May 9. However, due to concerns about people wanting to spend
Mother’s Day with their families, the date has been changed to Sunday, June 27.

Salute, Inc. 5K/10K Run & 5K Walk
Brother Will Beirsdorf from Holy Rosary Council in Arlington Heights spoke
at our April business meeting about the Salute, Inc. 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk.
Salute, Inc. passionately pursues meeting the financial, physical, and emotional
needs of military service members, veterans, and their families. Raising awareness
of their sacrifices and providing a safety net to ensure every military family is
treated with honor and dignity.
Will noted that when he was deployed as a Naval Reservist to
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba he was not able to maintain his employer’s health
insurance. His wife Mary Beth was overwhelmed with the magnitude of what
she and their three (3) sons were facing. With the help, support, and
outpouring of love from their family.
Will Beirsdorf friends, church, and community they were able to survive.

In 2003 Will and Mary Beth decided to start an organization whose fundraising efforts would be
based around a yearly Memorial Day Family Run/Walk. This year’s event will be on Sunday, May 30.
Registration for the event is open at the Salute website at http://www.saluteinc.org.
Got freedom? Thank a soldier.

Installation Dinner
Our Installation Dinner for the 2010 – 2011 year for both Holy Ghost Council and our Ladies
Auxiliary will be on Friday, June 18. Additional details will be in next month’s Knightly New.

Mission San Juan Diego Rummage Sale

Mission San Juan Diego will be holding a rummage sale on Saturday, July 3
from 7:00 AM until 2:00 PM at their church, 2323 North Wilke Road,
Arlington Heights. They have asked if members of our council could donate
saleable items such as clothing, electrical appliances, or anything else. Please
look through your closets and garages for any usable items that you could
donate. The principle of the First Degree is charity. Helping out the people of
Mission San Juan Diego parish by donating your usable items is a very simple
way to put your charity into action. Items may be brought directly to Mission San Juan Diego at 2323
North Wilke Road, Arlington Heights.
