Power Supply Arrangements

in DMRC
14

Electricity is required for:

Running of trains,
Station services
Power requirements are determined by peak-hour demands
of power for traction and auxiliary applications.
Broad estimation of auxiliary and traction power demand is
made based on :
Regeneration by rolling stock Up to 35%
Elevated station load about 500 KW
underground station is assessed at about 3.2 MW

From the reliability point of view Power supply at 220 kV, 132
kV or 66 kV level is taken from the Grid Sub Stations of
DTL/UPPCL/HVPN.
At the RSS it is stepped down to 25 kV to feed the OHE with
single phase traction transformers and 33 kV with 3 phase
auxiliary transformers to feed the auxiliary requirements. Both
are with 100% standby capacity.
33 kV is distributed through duplicate ring feeders along the
corridor and at every station it is stepped down to 400 volts
(3 phase supply) through dry type transformers. This
substation is termed as Auxiliary Substation (ASS) in our
system. This is distributed in the station to meet the power
supply requirements of the stations.

POWER SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

DMRC is taking power supply through two incomers

through underground cables.
In case of failure in one incoming circuit the other
cable will be able to take full load.
Power failure from one RSS , adjacent RSS can take
full load
Failure of one transformer, the standby can take the
full load.
Thus adequate redundancy has been built in at all stages
from the reliability point of view

Challenges faced

Challenges faced
Maintaining the clearances both in the vertical as well as
horizontal direction in the transformer bay was required.
Ventilation for the underground substation- Forced
ventilation system for the equipment rooms was adopted Three AHUs (2 Main + 1 Standby) have been provided
considering 15 Air changes per hour.
Water drainage system for this catchment area. The cables
trenches were designed with hangers at a height of 300 mm
from the bottom on which the cables were laid and the
bottom portion was used for draining the water to the water
tank with natural gravity towards the water collection tank.

Smoke detectors have been provided in the cable trenches in

the - 9 m area and the yard.

Precision type Floor mounted Air-conditioning system has

been provided for the cooling of Control & Relay room and
the server rooms with the arrangement of two main and one
standby AC units
Water pumping arrangement has been made such that the
system can pump out 1 lakh liters of water in one hour
keeping in account the catchment area. Automation has
been provided with three pumps. The first pump operates at
25%, second pump at 50% and the third pump at 85% of the
water being filled up in the water tank.
To be contd

Contd

The soil resistivity of the substation indicated that soil is

having three layers with upper layer having low resistivity,
middle layer having high resistivity and bottom layer again low
resistivity.
Upper strata is having low soil resistivity of 73 ohm-m, Middle
strata is having very high soil resistivity of 783 ohm-m and
Lower strata is again low resistivity of 63.2 ohm-m.
For better performance of grounding system, grid is placed in
low resistivity soil and analysis has been done using Auto Grid
Pro software package. Satellite earthing had to be adopted
since mother earth was not available for the electrodes
To be contd

Contd

A DG set of capacity 125 kVA has been provided at a higher

platform to meet out the emergency power requirement in
case of power supply failure to run the ancillary system of the
substation.
Substation Automation based on Intelligent Electronic Device
on IEC 61850 has been provided for control and protection of
the system.
This substation is first of its kind with unique layout below
ground level.
Each bay comprises of one circuit breaker and associated
disconnectors, earth switches and instrument transformers.
To be contd

Contd

At bay level, the IEDs provide all bay level functions like
control (commands outputs), monitoring (status indications,
measured values).
The IEDs are directly connected to the switchgear avoiding
the need for additional interposing of transducers.
Each bay control IED is independent of the others and its
functioning is not affected by any fault occurring in any of the
other bay control units of the substation.
The data exchange among bay level IEDs, and between bay
level and substation level take place via dual fiber-optic inter
37
bay bus according to IEC 61850-8-1 protocol.

37

Station Level
Human Machine Interface enables local station control and
monitoring through the vendor software package compatible
with IEC 61850.
DMRC Substation bays are limited the bay bus arrangement
provides independent station-to-bay and bay-to-bay data
exchange.
Substation Configuration Language (SCL) facilitates
integration of the system by the users/operators and can be
used without detailed knowledge of real-time systems.
An authorization mechanism has been provided to prevent
system access to unauthorized users

OCC Level

IEC 61850 signals are converted to IEC 608705-101 signals through a software based
gateway for communication from the substation
to the OCC.

CONCLUSION

Space has been a constraint for all the urban

cities. Now attempt is being made to
accommodate the RSS in a smaller space by using
GIS for the incomer yard, 33kV network and the
25 kV traction network. In one of the substations
even 25 kV AIS is being designed to make it
indoor below the control room from the cost
economics point of view . Study is under progress
to consider Hybrid Substation also where space is
a constraint.
