Background:
Jute, the Golden Fibre as it is popularly known as, is a natural
versatile fibre which is 100% bio-degradable and thus totally
environment friendly. The raw fibre has a natural silky lustrous
appearance. It has high tensile strength and low extensibility.
Jute is one of the most versatile natural fibres having
applications in packaging, textiles and non-textile sectors.
Being annually renewable and bio degradable, it plays a very
important role in environment protection. Worldwide concerns
for saving the nature and being more sustainable have to be
inbuilt in our minds and we should work in accordance. Using
jute or any other natural item, we can contribute to the healthy
growth of the society and support the greener environment.
Jute has another major potential of being turned into paper.
Substituting wood pulp with jute pulp in papermaking implies a
more sustainable solution for Bangladesh. Jute is abundantly
available in Bangladesh. Jute is based on its chemical and
morphological characteristics highly suitable for papermaking.
Papermaking from jute seems to be economically viable and
also papermaking from jute would contribute positively to
Bangladesh's urgently needed economic diversification as well
as to poverty reduction. Moreover, there are no intrinsically

negative implications on the environment from using jute for

papermaking in Bangladesh.
So, we also try to find out the impact of jute on environment in
view of Greenfield Jutex Ltd through the report.

SWOT Analysis of jute industry:

Strengths:
1.Because of fertile land of our country its comparatively easy
to grow.
2.Raw materials for jute industry is jute fiber. Because of Cheap
labor of our country and abundant production of the price of
jute is very low
3.jute is a eco-friendly and bio-degradable product. With the
pressure from green movement. It is going to sustain through
consumer preference
Weaknesses:
1.Production of jute fiber is a lengthy process and it needs
favorable condition. So, any negligence can decrease the
quality of jute which hampers the quality of jute products and
industry
2.Though jute production is labor intensive but the farmers
does not get the proper wages. So they are less interested in
producing jute.
3. Research and development on jute industry is hugely
neglected.
4. Marketing has been another weak point of jute industry. It
has been maintaining a very slow pace in coming out of
traditional way of marketing. Time has come for the industry to
think how to market this versatile, eco-friendly and natural
fibre. Government can only give initiation in product
development and test marketing but the follow-up rests on the
industry
Oppurtunities:

1.In the rise of green economy the demand for jute product will
increase day by day.
2. Because of being a high tensile product, variety of household
product can be easily made by jute fiber
3.Government is also taking steps to rejuvenate jute industry.

Threats:
1. Because of the rise of other synthetic cheap product, jute
products might not be able to create an effect on the market.
2.Competing with other jute growing country.
3.Because of the rise of synthetic product, there is less
opportunity of exporting jute now a days.
Green marketing of jute and jute products:
Environmentally-responsible or Green Marketing is a business
practice that takes into account consumer concerns about
promoting preservation and conservation of the natural
environment. Green marketing campaigns highlight the
superior environmental protection characteristics of a
companys products and services. A Jute and jute product
marketing is green marketing because its an eco-friendly
product. Bangladesh is very rich in bio-diversity. A wide range
of flora is found here. Though Bangladesh is famous for jute
and allied fibers, garments industries swept in and have
developed due to relative advantage & cheap labor cost. As
there is the multifibre concept of blending jute with other
natural and synthetic fibers, jute has bright future for using
them in the various textile areas. Taking in view the prospects,
the govt. of Bangladesh has started the diversification of jute
uses with its limited resources. It needs wide support for
production and marketing of such diversified products.
Consequently the govt. of Bangladesh initiated policy program
6

for the production of diversified jute goods through private

sector. To execute this program, Jute Diversification Promotion
Centre (JDPC) was established in 2002. The objective of JDPC is
to provide extension services to private sector for establishing
industry for the production of high value added diversified jute
products. The most basic and essential jute products fabricated
in Bangladesh jute mills are:
1.Canvas: This is the unique jute commodities, woven with
highly premium grades of fiber. Jute canvas and screen
lamination along with paper polythene is widely is widely used
in mines and for getting protection against weather.
2.Sacking Cloths: Sacking cloth is loosely woven heavy cloth
used for packing sugar, food grains, cement etc. which is made
up low quality jute fibers. Bags: Bags are usually fabricated
from sacking or hessian cloths which are mainly used for
shopping. They are often decorated with varied artistic designs
and with straps, chains and handles in several dimensions and
shapes. Other categories of bags are promotional bags which
are prepared for promote items for sale. Hessian Cloth: This
type of goods is a superior quality of plain woven jute fabric,
weighing between 5 and 12 ozs, a yard. Hydrocarbon free Jute
Cloth: This cloth is fabricated by treating jute with vegetable oil.
It is a hessian fabric, hydrocarbon free cloth, widely used for
packing different food materials, cocoa, coffee, peanut beans
etc.
Geo-Textile: It is a jute cloth laid along the river
embankment sides and hill slopes to prevent soil erosion and
landslides. D.W. Tarpaulin: This product is majorly used for
coverings on a very high multidimensional scale. Serim Cloth:
This is a light weight hessian cloth, used in felt industry for
reinforcing the non woven fabric and for strengthening paper
with lamination. Tobacco Sheets: This item is used for wrapping
tobacco leaves, tobacco sheets are made up of hessian cloth.
Decorative Items: Diversified decorative products are made up
of jute fabrics like wall hangings, toys, table lamps, paper,
7

decorative bags, furniture and many more. Hessian Tapes and

Gaps: These are made up with hessian cloth, woven with gapes
at regular intervals and the cloths cut between the gaps to
make small width taps. Raw Jute: The number of importers of
raw jute is limited due to the limited number of jute spinning
mills or jute felt manufacturing companies. Spinning companies
in the UK use brokers for the import of their raw jute, whereas
continental spinners buy directly from the origin countries. The
import of raw jute for the UK is mainly used for the spinning
companies in the Dundee area. The raw jute for the continent is
to large extent cuttings for the cable industry and felt industry.
Raw jute is used in the local industry of Bangladesh.

Environmental Impact of Jute

Limitation
Due to sufficient time and information for doing this report or
Assignment may shorten our view over the problems and
solution of jute. May be the feedback from environmental
organization didnt get by us from the Greenfield Jutex Ltd.
Regular information is used here which were accessible by us.

Discussion
We found by the upper description that jute started from the
field to the finished product and using those may have both
positive

and

negative

impact

on

environment.

But

comparatively we found more positive side than negative side

of jute and jute related products rather than other materials for
safe and nature friendly results. People should start replacing
other environment threaten thing by the jute. Jute also helps to
create greener environment, saving lives, opportunity to grow
more employment, productivity etc.

Recommendation
Greenfield Jutex Ltd is playing an important role to maintain a
sustainable environment and helping others to motivate to
have build up habit of using environment friendly products for
future betterment. They should keep it up and have to make
sure about any misuse of product and issues related with
environment. Thus, they should increase manpower to maintain
9

the

current

flow

of

development

and

complete

their

responsibility of finishing with good and lovely environment.

They also need to focus on root level jute production and train
up people related of jute production to avoid any issue which
may make problem or bad impact on environments.

Conclusion
The Kyoto protocol global climate change has resulted an
acceleration of transition to words a sustainable and more
environmental friendly economy. This transition is realized by
shifting the agricultural crops from food to energy and shift in
the use of petro chemical to renewable resources, such as nonfood cash crops. Jute being lingo cellulose plant fiber crop
second only to cotton in production and used become pivotal
for its comparative advantages over its competitor mostly man
made synthetic fibers as regards there ecological compatibility,
environmental

acceptability

and

economical

sustainability

comparing its competitive synthetic fibers as a raw material for
