Woodfield Systems Ltd.

Who We Are & What We Do

Woodfield Systems started trading in 1922 and have
been designing and manufacturing Marine Loading
Arms since 1954. We became a wholly owned
subsidiary of Aker Solutions in 1998.
Woodfield Systems have been operating from the same site for the past 40
years. We enjoy the benefits of an experienced and skilled workforce who
offer a level of expertise unrivalled in the industry. The company is based on
the North Kent coast of England, just 55 miles from London and only 25 miles
from the Channel Ports.
We have design engineers, project management team, sales and support staff
employed at our Whitstable site, with a team of service engineers on various
assignments worldwide.
Our UK workshop facilities are specifically designed for swivel and
loading arm manufacture and assembly. In addition to this Aker Solutions
have facilities worldwide where manufacturing can be undertaken locally.
Areas where we are able to manufacture include India, Malaysia, Qatar, Dubai,
USA, China and Eastern Europe.

Marine Loading Arms

Our Marine Loading Arms can be supplied as
manual, lever-hydraulic, electro-hydraulic with
either hardwired or wireless remote control.
Manually operated arms can be supplied with attachment brackets for the
later addition of hydraulic operations. Operational limiting controls and
other warning devices are available as optional extras. Woodfield Arms,
although normally fixed in one jetty position, can be mounted on movable
trailers or rail tracks to provide dockside flexibility.

Several types of quick connect/disconnect couplings are available for the

full range of Loading Arms. An emergency disconnect coupling is also
available as an operator initiated device or as part of a sequence controlled
shut down disconnect system.
Both our ambient and cryogenic swivels are well proven within the industry
and fully compliant with OCIMF Design & Construction Specification for
Marine Loading Arms. The LNG swivel has also been life cycle tested. In
addition to being used within our Marine Loading Arms our swivels are
used in offshore loading systems by other companies within Aker
Solutions.

Marine Loading Arms

Key design
The most important feature of a
Marine Loading Arm is the swivel
joints. These are required to be
capable of resisting bending
moments, shearing forces and
axial load combinations while
retaining
low
torque
characteristics and simple
maintenance. There are a total of
6 product swivels on a Marine
Loading Arm.
Swivel joints allow for movement
of the arm in all planes and freely
follow the motion of the tanker
when connected. These joints are
required to carry high loads and
must not allow any product
leakage.
On an LNG Marine Loading Arm the loading arm components must
undergo a cooling process to prevent thermal shock prior to the products
introduction.
To reduce tanker turn around time an optimum cool down procedure was
developed using finite element analysis (FEA) methods to achieve as short
a time as possible without causing any overstressing.
Specific features of WSL Swivels are:

Single track allows for accurate calculation of bearing capacity and is

not subject to problems of machining tolerances as experienced in
multi-track swivels

For cryogenic use, the entire swivel unit is stainless steel, which
actually increases in strength at low temperatures. For ambient
applications carbon steel is the preferred material of construction.

Seal design used will withstand design operating pressures, vacuum

conditions and high flow velocities.

Marine Loading Arms

Innovation in design
Downtime costs money and with tight shipping schedules and complex
equipment to be inspected and maintained, reduced downtime is essential.
Aker Solutions-Woodfields drive to find cost driven solutions focussed on
one particular area of the loading arm design; the rigid pantograph link
system. The use of a wire rope system necessitates frequently planned
maintenance activities and inspection leading to increased downtime of the
equipment.
As a result all Aker Solutions-Woodfield Marine Loading Arms are supplied
with a rigid pantograph link system. This arrangement consists of a rigid
linkage (not wire rope) between the outer arm and secondary
counterbalance weight support member situated behind the pedestal head
assembly. This rigid linkage therefore balances the outer arm
independently of the inner arm and is maintenance free due to the
non-lubricated bearings.

Woodfield Systems Ltd.

Control Systems
The design of the control system for the loading
arm is based on a fail-safe principle wherein any
failure such as electrical power failure will
automatically put the loading arm into the
hydraulic freewheel mode.
When connected the arm will always
safely follow the tankers movements
throughout the working envelope and
drift ranges. The principle of the
system is based on using handheld
trailing lead or radio control pendant
which can be operated from the jetty or
tanker deck.
Our supply includes:

Jetty control panel/desk

Logic panel

Local/remote selector switch

Alarm monitoring equipment

Direct-on-line motor starter will be
