Adding Text to a Photo: A Photoshop Lesson


This is intended to be the fourth instructional lesson in a series
Description
developed for the use of Photoshop.
The objective of the lesson is to develop the learners understanding of
Learning the Text tool in Photoshop, develop collaboration skills, and enhance
Objective their desire to explore. This will be accomplished through the use of step-
by-step instructions, video tutorials, and peer group work.
Target Audience This lesson is desinged for 12 to 13 year old, 7th to 8th grade students.
Learners must have:

● Basic PC skills (Mac or Windows, depending on your lab systems).


● Understand how to open and safe photo files.
● Understand how to manipulate the size of photos.
Prerequisite
● Understand how to create and manipulate a layer.
Skills
● Understand how to identify and select the tools in the left tool bar.

Note: If the learners are unfamiliar with any or the prerequisits, time
must be given to bring their level of understanding in line with that of
thier peers.
Lesson Duration 40 minutes
Lesson's 1-3 provide the learner with an understanding of how to:

● Load an image in photoshop.


● Create and manipulate layers pallet.
● Adjust image size.
● Save changes to image.
● Have an image for the learners to work on.
Preperation
Have your lab ready for the lesson to start as soon as the learners are in
place and ready to begin the lesson. Therefore, all the computers should
be on with Photoshop open. Have two chairs at each terminal. Have all
printed directions available at each terminal. Have the Photoshop tutorial
loaded and ready for review. Create an image that demonstrates what
the final project should look like.
For every two learners there should be one computer. Each computer

should have internet access and Photoshop CS3 loaded on it. A free

When the learners are at their assigned computers terminals, begin the
lesson by explaining that they will be continuing to learn about
Photoshop.

● Describe to the learners what they learn in this lesson will


Content/ compliment their previous knowledge with Photoshop.
Learning ● Describe how Photoshop can add text to any photo.
Activities ● Present examples of before and after images.
● Describe the procedure they are to use in order to complete the
objective.
● Instruct them to watch the tutorial.
● Finish introduction with an explination of the evaluation process.

The learning strategy uses media(Photoshop) and group work to build

exploration, collaboration, and product knowledge. The strategy uses

multiplemodalities which increase the affectiveness of the lesson.
Evaluation Tool Evaluation is done by the instructor using an attached rubric.
