KEYPORT - A man already facing charges in the

death of his dog in the Toms River was accused of doing unlicensed roofing work on a downtown building
consumed in a massive fire on Friday, authorities said.
Andrew Mayer, 28, of Toms River was charged
with working without a permit, working without a license and driving without a license, said Charles Webster, a spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutors Office. Mayer was released on his own recognizance, Webster said
The violations Mayer is charged with do not allege
that he caused the five-alarm blaze that sent nine people to the hospital and caused $613,000 in property
damage. Investigators have not determined the cause
of the fire or where it started, Webster said.
Mayer, who could not be immediately reached for
comment, was identified as investigators followed up
on tips that roofers were doing work on the building
before the flames broke out, Webster said.
Mayer is the same person facing charges in Ocean
County in the death of his dog last year. Authorities

A proposal to turn much of northeastern Monmouth

County into a national marine sanctuary is being met
by stiff opposition from fishermen, who are convinced
that the federal designation will eventually lead to new
restrictions and possibly bans on fishing.
The Sandy Hook Bay National Marine Sanctuary
would formalize boundaries around the estuary containing the Navesink and Shrewsbury rivers and
Sandy Hook Bay. What it would do beyond drawing
those lines is up for debate.
There are 17 towns included in the plan: Middletown, Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, Tinton Falls,
Colts Neck, Red Bank, Fair Haven, Rumson, Little Silver, Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury Township, Eatontown,
Oceanport, West Long Branch, Long Branch, Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright.
Rik van Hemmen, a marine engineer with an office
in Red Bank, is the architect of the proposal.
He believes that simply by calling the area a nation-

Attendance at last weekends Asbury Park Music in Film Festival doubled from last year and raked in at
least $125,000 in proceeds and donations for music education programs
that will benefit the citys children, according to festival officials.
So many events were sold out,
said Matt Hockenjos, executive director of the Asbury
Park Music Foundation, a nonprofit that helped organize the event. Its really amazing that this is our second year. It looks like were in year 10.
At least 10,000 people attended the various events
over the weekend, which included film screenings,
panel discussions and concerts at venues all over Asbury, said festival co-chairman Tom Donovan, who is
also president and publisher of the Asbury Park Press
and Gannett NJ, which sponsored the event along with
