Introduction:
In this project, we have looked at Flood Data dataset which contains flood
data from 1985 to 2014 and includes copious of information, namely
location, date, estimated damage, casualties and displacement, magnitude
and main causes of floods. Below is the list of analyses that we have
performed on the data set.

Yearly breakdown of the total number of floods worldwide

through trend line

Based on the graph, the total number of floods worldwide between 1985 and
2014 has been recorded at 4,234. In addition, years 2003, 2002, and 2007
with 293, 260, and 242 incidents are the most flooded years in the past 30
years (Exhibit I). Based on the trend line graph, while the number of floods
was gradually increasing between 1985(69 floods) and 2007(242 floods),
starting 2008(180 floods), we see a decreasing trend which has been
continuing until 2014(99 floods). Finally, the year 1987 with 45 incidents, is
the lowest flooded year in the past twenty years. This analysis can provide
useful insights for researchers and particularly meteorologist, whom are
interested in studying the weather behavior and any abnormal incidents such
as the sharp increase in the number of floods which happened in 2002 and
2003.

II.

Main causes of flood and their trends over the past 20 years

According to the data sets, the 5 main causes for floods in the past 30 years
are: (1) Heavy rain, (2) Torrential Rain, (3) Monsoonal Rain, (4) Tropical
Cyclone, and (5) Brief Torrential Rain.
With 2,585, Heavy Rain is the main cause behind the flooding of the past
30 years. However, since 2003, the number of heavy rain which has led to
flooding has decreased which can explain why we have witnessed a decrease
3

Amir Fard Bahreini

Vijay K Thammannagari

in the total number of floods in the past 7 years as well. Torrential Rain with
344 is second main reason behind floods. Although steady between all these
years, in the past 5 years, we can see that a smaller number of Torrential
Rain has caused floods. Monsoonal Rain with 336 times, Tropical
Cyclone with 328, and Brief Torrential with 210 times are ranked 3 to 5
among the main causes of floods. Exhibit II shows that throughout the past
30 years, the average of number of these 3 causes leading to floods has
remained the same. This information is again useful for Meteorologists to
study the pattern of the weather. It also aids the strong argument on why the
number of floods in the past 7 years has been decreasing.
III.

Countries with the highest number of casualties(Deaths) in the

first 3 deadliest years

Unfortunately, the most negative aspect of floods is its casualties. Among

the 4,234 floods of the past 30 years, some years have been deadliest than
others and some countries faced this issue more severely than others. In this
part, first we have determined the years which floods have left the most
deaths. Years 2008, 2004, and 1991 has been deadliest years in this period.
However, each year one country suffered more than others. In 1991,
Bangladesh with 139,039 counted for 92.6% of total deaths in that year. In
2004, Thailand with 160,023 deaths, comprised 92.4% of deaths due to
floods in that year. In 2008, Burma with 100,000 out of 107,610 counted for
93% of total deats. In addition to Meteorologists, economists and the local
governments can also use this insights to analyze the social and the

economic situations of their country and explain any abnormal trends that
might have happened in that time period.
IV.

Countries which endured the highest number of damages over

1 billion $ between 1985-2014

In addition casualties, floods have had a negative financial impact in many
countries. In some, this loss added up to billion dollars. This analysis
determines the countries which have endured losses more than one billion
dollars more than others. China with 16 times have faced the heavy financial
impact that floods left behind. United Stated with 10 and UK with 6, were
placed in the next 2 places.
V.Most financially damaging flood in USA between 1985 and 2014
detailed location, date, deaths and displacements
The database shows that in 2005, a flood which came from the Gulf of
Mexico coast caused 60,000,000,000 $ in damage and has been the most
financially devastating flood in the past 30 years. Locations affected by the
flood were Louisiana, New Orleans, Slidell, St. Bernard Parish Mississippi
Biloxi, Gulfport, Harrison County, Pascagoula, Waveland, Bay St. Louis
Alabama and Dauphin Island. This flood led to displacement of 500,000
people and death of 1,053 others. The information is useful for to
Meteorologists, economists, the local and Federal government.

deadly years and the quarter that the flood happened

1991, 2004, and 2008 have been the deadliest years in the past 30 years.
The longest flood in China happened at the year 2004, in which it went for 95
days. A closer look shows us that this flood happened at Q3 of 2004 and
affected 555,517 sq km in its way.

Dashboard 1: Country- Cause

Top 5 causes of flood in the top 5 most flooded countries
(Breakdown yearly with trend line, 1985-2014)
Dashboard is constructed based on three worksheets:
1. Most flooded countries
2. Main Causes
3. Yearly trend line
The objective is to find more information regarding the countries which had
the highest number of floods in the past 20 years. With the help of this
dashboard, not only main causes of flood and the number of times it has
caused flood appears, but also we can see yearly breakdown of the country
flood history. Figure 1 below shows the instance where we choose

This dashboard, provide useful insight on the most deadly years. First, it
reveals the main causes of flood in those years. This can be extremely useful
not only for meteorologists, but also ordinary people to be extra cautious
when it comes those natural phenomena. Secondly, it shows which country
lost the most number of people in that year, and finally it shows the
countries which had to endure the most number of displacement among
their

in

those

years.
