Introduction:
In this project, we have looked at Flood Data dataset which contains flood
data from 1985 to 2014 and includes copious of information, namely
location, date, estimated damage, casualties and displacement, magnitude
and main causes of floods. Below is the list of analyses that we have
performed on the data set.

Based on the graph, the total number of floods worldwide between 1985 and
2014 has been recorded at 4,234. In addition, years 2003, 2002, and 2007
with 293, 260, and 242 incidents are the most flooded years in the past 30
years (Exhibit I). Based on the trend line graph, while the number of floods
was gradually increasing between 1985(69 floods) and 2007(242 floods),
starting 2008(180 floods), we see a decreasing trend which has been
continuing until 2014(99 floods). Finally, the year 1987 with 45 incidents, is
the lowest flooded year in the past twenty years. This analysis can provide
useful insights for researchers and particularly meteorologist, whom are
interested in studying the weather behavior and any abnormal incidents such
as the sharp increase in the number of floods which happened in 2002 and
2003.
II.
Main causes of flood and their trends over the past 20 years
According to the data sets, the 5 main causes for floods in the past 30 years
are: (1) Heavy rain, (2) Torrential Rain, (3) Monsoonal Rain, (4) Tropical
Cyclone, and (5) Brief Torrential Rain.
With 2,585, Heavy Rain is the main cause behind the flooding of the past
30 years. However, since 2003, the number of heavy rain which has led to
flooding has decreased which can explain why we have witnessed a decrease

in the total number of floods in the past 7 years as well. Torrential Rain with
344 is second main reason behind floods. Although steady between all these
years, in the past 5 years, we can see that a smaller number of Torrential
Rain has caused floods. Monsoonal Rain with 336 times, Tropical
Cyclone with 328, and Brief Torrential with 210 times are ranked 3 to 5
among the main causes of floods. Exhibit II shows that throughout the past
30 years, the average of number of these 3 causes leading to floods has
remained the same. This information is again useful for Meteorologists to
study the pattern of the weather. It also aids the strong argument on why the
number of floods in the past 7 years has been decreasing.

economic situations of their country and explain any abnormal trends that
might have happened in that time period.

1991, 2004, and 2008 have been the deadliest years in the past 30 years.
The longest flood in China happened at the year 2004, in which it went for 95
days. A closer look shows us that this flood happened at Q3 of 2004 and
affected 555,517 sq km in its way.

Dashboard 2: Deadliest
Analysis of the 5 deadliest years regarding main causes, highest
number of casualties and displacements.
Dashboard is constructed based on four worksheets:

Deaths
This dashboard, provide useful insight on the most deadly years. First, it
reveals the main causes of flood in those years. This can be extremely useful
not only for meteorologists, but also ordinary people to be extra cautious
when it comes those natural phenomena. Secondly, it shows which country
lost the most number of people in that year, and finally it shows the
countries which had to endure the most number of displacement among
their
people
in
those
years.
