Hand Washing Lesson Plan

Kindergarten
Objectives
? By learning and practicing proper hand washing skills, children will understand
that being clean is very important to good health.
? Children will pledge to be in charge of their own health.

How To Wash Your Hands


? Use soap and warm, running water
? Make bubbles by rubbing your hands together
? Scrub your hands and under your fingernails for 20 seconds (sing the Happy
Birthday song two times)
? Rinse your hands with running water
? Always use a clean towel to dry your hands
? If you use a paper towel, throw it away in the trash

Learning Activity
Germ Prints
Use a spray bottle filled with clean water. Spray water on childrens hands. Explain that
the water on their hands represents germs that come out of their mouths when they
cough or sneeze. Now have the children touc h an object (table or chair). Ask them
what happened to the object they touched (it became wet). Explain that this is what
happens when we sneeze into our hands and then touch an object (the germs on our
hands get on the object). Discuss what might happen if one of their friends touches the
object while it is still wet (they might pick up the germs and get sick). Explain that if you
wash your hands after coughing or sneezing in them, the germs will be washed away
and there will be less of a chance for people to get sick.
Option: water can be colored with a few drops of food coloring for effect.

Assessment
? Children will demonstrate proper hand washing skills.
? Children will complete the pledge/coloring activity sheet.

Additional Information
? The hand washing message needs to be reinforced several times throughout the
day, especially before lunch and after going to the bathroom. Teach by example!
? Make copies of the attached pledge/coloring activity sheet for children to
complete.
? Ask students to write his/her own name on the bottom of the attached activity
page to show that they pledge to wash their hands. Post one of the sheets in the
classroom to serve as a reminder of the pledge.

Objective
? Explain why good hygiene and grooming are important.
? Each student will understand that germs can be spread by not properly washing
their hands.

How To Wash Your Hands


? Use warm, running water.
? Make bubbles by rubbing your hands together using soap and water
? Scrub your hands and under your fingernails for 20 seconds (sing the Happy
Birthday song two times)
? Rinse your hands with running water
? Always use a clean towel to dry your hands
? Turn off the water with a clean paper towel and throw it away

Learning Activity
Glitter Germs
(Before conducting this activity, be sure to ask if any students have allergies to hand lotion.)

Ask: What is a germ? How big is it? Why is it important to wash your hands?
Put a small amount of hand lotion in each students hands. Have them rub it all over
their hands. Sprinkle, over a bucket, a sma ll amount of glitter into each students
hands. Have them rub their hands to spr ead the glitter evenly. Next, have a few
students try to wipe the glitter off with a dry paper towel. Then, have a few students try
to get the glitter off with plain cold water. After that, have a few students use warm
water, with soap, to get the glitter germs off. Let everyone wash his/her hands with
warm, soapy water. Bring everyone back together and ask, What does the glitter
represent (GERMS)? What happened when you tried to get the glitter off with just a
paper towel? Cold water? Warm, soapy wate r? Explain that if you wash your hands
after coughing or sneezing into them, the germs will be washed away and there will be
less of a chance for people to get sick. Tell students that germs are so tiny they can
only be seen with the help of a microscope.

Assessment
? Children will demonstrate proper hand washing (warm, soapy water).
? Children will understand that germs can only be seen with a microscope.
? Children will complete the connect-the-dots/coloring activity sheet.

There are many types of germs. Examples: bacteria, viruses.
Bacteria and viruses cause illness and disease.
Some illnesses and diseases that are caused by bacteria and viruses are very serious.
Some examples of illnesses and diseases caused by bacteria and viruses are: colds, flu,
pneumonia, hepatitis and Shigellosis.

Washing your hands is the very best way to prevent these illnesses and diseases.

Learning Activity
Germy Counter Sheet
This learning activity can be done at home and school. It is intended to show the
importance of hand washing before eating or touching food.
The Germy Counter Sheet is taped to the childs bathroom mirror or it can be placed
on the refrigerator. Each and every time the child washes his/her hands before
breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack time - cross off a germ!
This activity can be a weekly project to be given to the teacher/parent at the end of the
week for recognition of being a champion hand washer!

Assessment

? Children will complete the Germy Counter Sheet satisfactorily.
? Children will complete the word search activity sheet satisfactorily.

Everyone has lots of germs on their hands. Most of them won't hurt you. But some
of them can make you sick if you touch your eyes, mouth, nose or cuts on your
body. When you forget to wash your hands, you can spread germs to other people.
You can also pick up germs from things you touch. Think about all the things you
touch each day. Now think about how many people may have touched these things
before you. If they are not good hand washers, you may have picked up their
germs. Yuck! Washing our hands is the best way to keep from getting germs from
other people.
