SHARKS

Sharks are a type of fish that live in the sea. Sharks have lived on Earth for almost 400
million years. Today there are about 375 species (kinds) of sharks. The smallest is the draft
dogfish which is less than 8 inches (20 centimeters) long. The huge whale shark can be
more than 50 feet (15 meters) long.
Sharks, like all fish, are vertebrates (i.e. animals with a backbone). A sharks skeleton,
however, is not made of bone. It is made of flexible material called cartilage. Sharks, like
other fish, are cold-blooded. They do not make their own body heat.
Sharks live in seas all over the world. Most sharks live in warm waters. However, sharks
have been spotted near the North and South Pole. Sharks live in salt water, but some can
live for a while in fresh water. Bull sharks, for example, can swim up the Mississipi River.
Some kinds of sharks live in swallow water along coastlines. Other sharks live far out in the
open ocean. A few species live deep down in the sea.
Most sharks have powerful jaws and rows of sharp, triangular teeth. They use their teeth
and jaws to crush their prey or tear out pieces of flesh. Your teeth are anchored in your jaw.
A sharks teeth are set into its gums. Sharks often lose teeth while eating. However, there
are always rows of new teeth growing behind the first set. As a shark loses teeth, new ones
move forward to replace them.
Fish, along with shellfish, is the favorite food of most meat-eating sharks. Great white
sharks will sometimes eat larger sea creatures such as seals, dolphins, whales and other
marine mammals.
Sharks play an important role in keeping ecosystem in balance. Sharks often eat weak or
diseased animals. Biologists fear that without sharks, the number of other animals in the sea
would quickly grow out of control eats all the food. It might take many years to restore the
delicate balance that sharks help maintain.

Breadfruit is an evergreen tree growing up to 26 m tall, but most commonly measuring

around 15 m. The twigs contain milky latex. The large leaves are up to 30 cm long, are
deeply cut into seven or nine pointed lobes. The male and female inflorescences are borne
separately on the same tree, the male ones being sausage-shape, producing masses of
pollen, while the female ones are club-shaped. Pollination is carried out by fruit bats, but
cultivated varieties produce fruit without pollination. The fruit is a highly specialized
structure called a syncarp (multiple fruit produced by the adhesion of fruits from a number
of flowers). The fruits are about 15 cm across and 30 cm long, with the persistent remains
of about two thousand female flowers each showing as a hexagon on the skin of the fruit.
Cultivars grown for their edible fruit do not normally produce seeds. Seeded varieties are
grown for their edible seeds.
Breadfruit is the staple diet of many people in the Pacific islands. The fruit contain 70
% water and 30 % starch and sugars, with significant amounts of vitamin C and small
amounts of other vitamins and minerals. The fruit pulp of seedless varieties is preferred for
eating. Varieties containing seeds are sometimes referred to as 'breadnut. The seeds can be
boiled, baked or fried and have the flavor of groundnuts (peanuts). The milky latex of the
tree can be used for caulking boats. The leaves and latex are used medicinally to treat
fungal disease, to ease sprains or to treat diarrhea. Herbal tea can be made from the leaves.

GORILLAS
Gorillas are the largest of all the primates. A male gorilla can be 180 centimeters tall and can
weigh 200 kilograms. Gorillas are very strong but they do not often flight. In fact they are peaceful
animals.
Gorillas live (43) small family groups of about 15. In a group there is one strong, older male,
some young males, and a few females with their babies. They move slowly around a large area of
jungle eating leaves and bushes.
In some ways gorillas are very like humans. When they are happy, they laugh (44) wave their
arms. When they are angry, they beat their chests. When they are sad, they cry. But they cry (45),
without any tears.
Unfortunately, people hunt and kill gorillas. They also cut down and burn their trees. There are
