Project 3 Reflection
For Project 3, I created a campaign titled Stop College Radio Censorship, which
consists of 3 genres. My main genre is a podcast, hosted by myself, which lasts 10 minutes and
20 seconds. Its purpose is to both inform and persuade the audience. First, I explain what college
radio is about, what the FCC is and the issue that censorship has become to this student
community. Furthermore, I try to persuade the audience by stating my arguments as to why
college radio should not be censored. I chose to make a podcast because I believe it is the best
way to reach my audience, who are mostly radio listeners and enjoy that mode and medium. My
second genre is text-based; it is a remediation of my podcast. Thus, it has the same purpose of
informing and persuading the audience. The reason why I chose to remediate the podcast into
text is because I understand that not everyone that comes across my campaign will have the time
to listen to a complete podcast, or isnt in the appropriate place to play it. For them not to miss
out on the campaign, I decided to type it so they can read and still engage with it. My third genre
is a collage that serves as the artwork of the podcast and text. Its sole purpose is to persuade
people to dive into my campaign. It summarizes the issue of college radio censorship in one
picture: the control of the FCC over college radio broadcasters; how they dont let them speak
their minds and restrict the music they play.

In order for my campaign to be affective, I used different rhetorical appeals in each genre.
For both my podcast and text post, I used Ethos, Pathos and Logos. The Ethos is used when I
give the background information about the community and the issue, based on my prior research
from books and articles. The Ethos and Pathos are found in my arguments and when I give
examples of student stations that have been censored and how they have been affected by it. For
my collage I focused on Pathos by depicting a college student broadcaster and the different ways
she is being manipulated. I chose to implement these rhetorical appeals because I wanted the
audience to trust my information, and have a sense that Im well informed and know what I am
talking about. I also wanted the audience to put themselves in the communitys position and feel
what they go through with this issue.
The basis of my campaign was my Project 2, for which I made a research essay about the
community and the issue in general. This means I had to include arguments against censorship
and arguments in favor. When I transferred my information to the genres for Project 3, I focused
on the arguments that supported my campaign. I also used a lot of the background information I
found in my research, as I mentioned, about the college radio and censorship.
My promotional strategy was to have all three genres in one page and then distribute that link
in different social medias. That way people could experience it all at once and wouldnt have to
lose time going through several clicks. I found a website called Spreaker, where people create a
profile and share their podcasts. I thought is was perfect because the layout allowed me to upload
a picture, the audio widget in the middle and below, a text. As I began to launch my website, I
realized that the text was too long to be placed as a description of the podcast. Also, I thought, if
someone was already attracted to the podcast, with the intentions of listening to it, why would
they read the text? So I decided to separate them. On my Tumblr, I made a post that included my

collage, the text in the middle and at the bottom a link to my podcast, inviting my audience to
listen in case they wanted to get further into the issue and make it more personal. I wanted to
expand my audience, and not only limit it to my Tumblr followers, so I decided to share the link
to my Tumblr post and my Spreaker profile on other of my social media pages, like Twitter.
To be honest, I understand that my issue is not very popular nor controversial and that not
many people are interested or even aware of college radio. I had low expectations about the
feedback I was going to receive from my audience. Nevertheless, I have been proven wrong; as
of now I have received 10 reblogs and 2 likes on my Tumblr post, and 40 plays, 3 likes and 2
comments on my podcast. This takes me to believe that my campaign and promotional strategy
have been effective in someway.
My campaign for Project 3 definitely helps and benefits the college radio community.
First of all, it attracts more listeners. As I mentioned, there are a lot of people who come across
my campaign without knowing anything about college radio, but then become interested in it.
Also, and the most important part, is that my campaign supports and helps them achieve their
goal, which is to grow as a training facility for students and as an alternative to commercial
stations, with unique content. Censorship inhibits this, but my campaign is looking to free them
from this issue.
My opinion of the community didnt really change much over the course of Project 2 to
Project 3. As soon as I became aware of the issue, I felt inclined to take the side that is against
censorship. I have always admired who they are and what they do as student broadcasters. With
Project 3, I became more encouraged to support this community and find ways to keep them on
air without them having to change their ways.

The composing process for my 3 genres was definitely different than with the research
paper. For the research essay, I had to read a lot about the topic and write the main points,
focusing on informing the audience. On the other side, for the campaign, I had to think a lot
more about how I was going to persuade the audience. This meant I would have to think about
the design of my genres; about what the audience wants to see or listen and basically how will I
drag them into the campaign. I had to to put myself in their position and see if I was laying out
my ideas correctly. In addition, I learned that a lot of small decisions make a big impact on
genres like these, such as color choices, organization, tone of voice, etc. As a very indecisive and
perfectionist person, this made it hard for me to be satisfied with my work. For this reason, I
personally felt that composing for Project 3 was more difficult than composing for Project 2.
