lntroduction

Originatty pubtished in the French journaL lnvariance (Annee V, Serie ll,

in 1969 to exp[ain why
No.2), 'On Organisation' is an'open letter written
the authors felt revotutionaries had to reject the forrns of political
groups and organisations that had normalty been their home. This
version has been taken fronn the transtation nnade availabte on the'Riff
Raff ' website (http: / /www. riff- raff se),
,

To our knowtedge 'On Organisation' is currently unavaitabte as a

parnphlet, though it is included in a coltection of Camatte's writtings
entitted 'This Wortd We lÄust Leave and Ather Essays' pubtished by
it as we think its as retevant today as
Autonomedia. We've republished
when it was written. lndeed with recent discussions about
'Organisationc{fsfs' and 'anti-organisationa{fsfs' in pubtications such as

'Anarchy, a Jaurnalof Desire Armed'and criticisrns of platformist

strains of anarchism, it woutd seem usefut to return to Camatte's
criticisms of organisations and groups as 'gongs' and 'reckets'. ;

Camatte is part of a tradition of left-cornmunism that has existed

atongside, and fiercety criticis€d, the better known tendencies of
Leninism and Trotskyisrn, Being an offspring of Marxisrn however, the
useful criticisms and analyses that this tradition has to offer are usuatty
fitted with so much jargon that they often end up being ignored, which
we feet is ia shanre . 'On Organisation' , as ole exampte, has many
chaltenging ideas for those prepared to make the effort.

The essence of the argument in On Arganisatian'is that potitical groups,

whethen large or srnatt, forma[ or informat, hierarchical or not, can only
be a hindrance to revolutionary devetopments. For Camatte "capitalism
is the triumph of the organisation, and the farm the organisation
takes fs the gang." Camatte and Cottu argue that at att levets of
society the whole social fabric is based on competing organisations and
'rackets', with the state as a rnediator between gangs. Groups tend to
hide the existence of their ruting ctiques (forrnal or informat) to appear
more attractive to outsiders, and try to make thernsetves appear
different from att the other rackets. The gang then vampirizes the
individuats within it, sucking their creative abitities and suppressing
their individuality in the name of an ittusory 'community'.

Though this is often btamed on the informal nature of some radical

groups, sometirnes tabetted 'The Tyranny of Structuretessness' after Jo
Freeman's essay of the same name, Camatte betieves all groups suffer
from this, from international federations through to informal networks.

For Carnatte anci Cottu it is for such groups to avoid

impossibte
separating themsetves from those around them äs, "to belong in order
to exctude, thatfs the internal dynamic of the gang." Nor can they
avoid substituting themsetves for the proletariat, seeing themsetves
instead as the agents of change or the bringers of 'true consciousness'.

Camatte and Cottu argue that "atl. forms of working class political
organisation have disappeared. In their place, gangs conf ront one
another in on obscene competitian, veritoble rackets rivalting each
other in what they peddle but identical in their essence."

So where does this leave us in terrns of what peopte who identify as

revolutionaries can actuatty do? He argues that revotutionaries can onty

keepuptoosenetworksofpersonatcontacts,devetopingtheorywhere
possibte. He believes that real change witt onty come as a result of a
crisis in capitatism that witt be the spark for a general movement
towards communism. Certainty revolutionaries can and shoutd get stuck
into such opportunities, but for Camatte it is worse than useless to
engage in "petty activism" in the meantime.

Some parts of this introduction have been taken from a review of 'This
Woirld We lviust Leave and Other Essays' in Do Or Die #9. The full text
of that review is available here;

'Jacques Camatte and the New Politics of Liberation' , by Dave

Antagonism was originatty seriati zed in the US journal 'Green
Änarchy'. lt was spread over three issues (nurnbers 18 - 20\, spanning
Fatt/Winter 2OO4 through to the Summer 2005 issue. One of the
reasons we've reprinted it qs a pamphtetis because we feet this time
tag witt have detrimentatty affected the reading of the article.
Why reprint an articte so recentty pubtished in a journal
which has a significant distribution in the anti-civilization mitieu?
We[t, partty because we see it as complimenting our recent
rgpubtishing of Camatte's seminal texts 'Against Domestication' and
'On Organisation'. Atso, äs Dave Antagonism points out in the opening
paragraphs of this essay, "Camatte fs a difficult figure for Engtish
speaking readers". With this in mind we hope a reading of 'Jacques
Camatte and the Nel / Politics of Liberatian' witl hetp readers
overcome some of the difficutties they may face when reading
'Against Domestication' and'On Organisation'.
However, 'Jacques Camatte and the New Politics of
Liberation' is far more than a primer to Camatte's theories. The
author brings up some of his own projections and suggestions for a
devetopment or synthesis of ideas. For exampte:

"ln some w?ys GAI AP and A^tl are polar opposifes.

A crude reading of both sees the former as an image of
the constant power of capital, the latter as the constant
power of labour. lvlaybe sonref hing fertile cen arise from
thesfs and anti -thesis?"
For some time we have been increasingly interested in the
commonatities, frictions and contradictions which seem to be
devetoping within lnsurrectionatist; anti-civitization and uttra-teft
circtes, Unfortunatety, of [ate, we seem to have seen some of this
potentiaL tost to 'personality' potitics and a retreat into ideologicaL
thinking and the 'gang' mentatity of the 'rockets' Camatte and CoLttl

in'On Organisation'.
discuss
We are not interested in 'brand' wars but rather a proplltsive
move towards a new anarchic future.
Camatte's ideas have atways been of interest to anti-
civitizationists and 'Jacques Camatte and the New Politics.of
Liberation' expticitty hightights the influence of Camatte on GA/AP
thought:

"Cematfe's wriffngs on organizatian Prof eundly'

influenced the develapment of the pubtication Green
Anarchist. lAore broadty thougtt Camatte charts the
same potitical territory as GAl AP in a sophfs ticaied
_ way."

The author atso mentions David Watson and Do or Die

among others who have engaged sympatheticatty with Carnatte
and come from a GA/AP orientation.
We feet that Camatte hotds an important ptace within an array
of thinkers that have influenced the trajectory of anti-civitization
thought. We hope the pubtication of this text contributes to a further
understanding of Camatte's work and an exptoration and devetopment
of radical ideas.
