3 Fire Pump House Construction And Location

7.3.1 Pumps shall be located close to the supply source and away from
hazardous areas. A pump house is required in freezing climates. The
pump house shall be of noncombustible construction and free of
combustibles. Floor drains to handle leaks and condensation shall be
provided, along with normal exhaust ventilation. The temperature in the
pump house shall be maintained at no less than 40F or the minimum
temperature recommended by the engine manufacture, whichever is
greater.
7.3.2 Where a pump house is not required the pump shall be protected by a
shelter and the fire pump controller shall be enclosed by a minimum
NEMA 4X rated cabinet.
7.3.3 The pumphouse shall be protected with an automatic sprinkler system
installed in accordance with NFPA 13 Standard of the Installation of
Sprinkler Systems. Locating pumps and onsite storage tanks at various
locations around the facility provides greater reliability in the water supply
and results in less pressure drop between the pump and the area of
demand. Net positive suction head (NPSH) requirements and friction loss
in the piping shall be considered in locating fire pumps.
7.8 Pressure Maintenance Pump
7.8.1 Pressure maintenance (jockey) pump shall be provided to maintain a
predetermined pressure on the system and make up normal leakage in
the distribution system. Normally, the pressure maintenance pump will
maintain 10 to 15 psi above the cut in pressure of the automatic starting
fire pump.
7.8.2 When the fire water system will be routinely used for purposes other
than
fire fighting, the pressure maintenance pump shall have sufficient
capacity for such use or a separate service pump shall be provided. The
service pump need not meet the requirements for fire pumps
7.9 Pressure Gages
7.9.1 Discharge and suction gages shall be provided at each pump, except
that
suction gages are not required for vertical shaft, turbine-type pumps
taking suction from a well or open wet pit. Gage dials shall be oil filled and
at least 3-1/2 in. in diameter and be provided with 1/2 in. gage valves.
See Sunoco Standard0435 for additional details
7.10 Suction and Discharge Piping
7.10.1
Sizes of suction and discharge piping shall be based on pump capacity
and in accordance with NFPA 20, Standard for the Installation of
Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection. When two or more pumps
discharge into the distribution system at the same location, a minimum 16
in. manifold and supply line shall be used to feed the system.
7.10.2 A Listed check valve shall be installed in the pump discharge
assembly.

7.11 Controllers
7.11.1 A controller shall be provided for each fire pump. The controller shall
be
designed and installed in accordance with the requirements of NFPA 20,
Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection.
