INTRODUCTION

Although the field of education has made progress in the past ten years, this less
regulated area of the education sector - vocational training seems to have lost its
importance. This has led to the widening gap between the supply and demand for
skilled manpower across various industries. This shortage of skills has translated
directly into unemployment among an increasing number of graduates and post
graduates with less on the job training who pass out every year and are forced to be
re-trained in order to become marketable.

Vocational education (education based on occupation or employment), also known

as career and technical education (CTE) or technical and vocational education and
training (TVET) is education that prepares people for specific trades, crafts
and careers at various levels from a trade, a craft, technician, or a high professional
practitioner.
in engineering, accountancy, nursing, medicine, architecture, pharmacy, law etc.
Craft vocations are usually based on manual or practical activities, traditionally nonacademic, related to a specific trade, occupation, vocation. It is sometimes referred
to as technical education as the trainee directly develops expertise in a particular
group of techniques. Vocational education spans craft, further and higher education

Vocational education may be classified as teaching procedural knowledge. This can

be contrasted with declarative knowledge, as used in education in a usually
broader scientific field, which might concentrate on theory and
abstract conceptual knowledge, characteristic of tertiary education. Vocational
education can be at the secondary, post-secondary level, further education,
and higher education level and can interact with the apprenticeship system.
Increasingly, vocational education can be recognised in terms of recognition of prior
learning and partial academic credit towards tertiary education (e.g., at a university) .

LITERATURE REVIEW:-

This research makes an attempt to provide a review on the outcomes and present situation
in vocational education and training (VET) programs in education system. Various countryspecific studies indicate that the VET system has not responded very well in india. The VET
stream is quite small. Despite there being a growing demand for a skilled labour force, the
labour market outcomes of those who have followed the vocational path are not good in
india as the right steps have not be taken. However, the governments are giving full attention
to making the VET system robust in India . Various new policy initiatives have been
undertaken by the governments in recent years.

Vocational education and training (VET) focuses on specific trades and imparts the practical
skills which allow individuals to engage in a specific occupational activity. VET is not only
important in providing employment opportunities to individuals but also helps in enhancing
the productivity of firms: Vocational education and training are indispensable instruments for
improving labour mobility, adaptability and productivity, thus contributing to enhancing firms
competitiveness and redressing labour market imbalances. VET comprises all skill
transfers, formal and informal, which are required in the improvement of productive activities
of a society.

Overtime, various terms have been used to describe elements of the field of VET. These
include apprenticeship training, vocational education, industrial arts ,technical education,
Technical/Vocational Education (TVE), Occupational Education (OE), Technical and
Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Career and Technical Education (CTE).
According to the employment and unemployment survey of 2004-05 conducted by the
National Sample Survey Organization (Government of India), in the age group age 15-29
years, about 2 per cent of the population are reported to have received formal vocational
training and another 8 per cent are reported to have received non-formal vocational training
(Government of India, 2006). At present, the capacity in the VET programs is 3.1 million
students per year. The government has set a target of up-skilling 500 million people by 2022.
However, the VET programs have also not been very successful in India. An ILO
efficiency/impact evaluation study of the ITIs and ITCs, in three states of the country
(Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Orissa) shows that the labor market outcomes of the
trained candidates are not good. The study finds that in the states of Andhra Pradesh,
Maharashtra and Orissa, 41, 35 and 16.2 per cent of graduates, respectively, from ITIs were
able to get wage employment/self-employment/joined family business. The corresponding
percentages for those graduating from ITCs were 22.8, 35.6 and 21.3 per cent, respectively
(International Labor Organization ILO,)

OBJECTIVES

The objective behind doing the research project on vocational training and its
implication and importance in our education structure is to bring out the real benefits
involved with vocational training as it can assist, the students for their career
advancement.
The objectives of vocational training are as follows :

Meet education demands of the population, support professional, career

development and social protection of individuals.

Feed economy with qualified staff competitive both on local and international
labour market, ensure a match between the fast changing labour market and
VET system.

Maintain competitiveness of employed be re-training and professional

development.

Foster appropriation of the peoples educational capacities with the new

social-economic conditions to support self-employment and entrepreneurship

Support student mobility

Ensure professional development of minority groups and create employment

opportunities for them;

Develop Lifelong Learning

Develop School-Business Partnership in VET.

SIGNIFICANCE

The speed of a nation's development is directly related to the quantity and quality of
vocational skills possessed by its work force .The wider the range and higher the
quality of vocational skills, the faster the growth and more prosperous the society.
The availability of employable skills is one of the major determinants of how readily
new job seekers find employment. The very low level of employable skills makes the
search for work much more difficult. It reduces the market value of the job seeker
and adds to the costs of employers that must train new recruits from scratch.
The significance of doing this research is that it will help us to realize how much
important
We further discuss the importance and significance of vocational training in
our education curriculum:

Hands-on work activities allow direct application of acquired knowledge

Vocational Education helps people in better performance of their jobs as they
acquire a great learning experience. Working professionals get a chance to
enhance their skills while making money.
Vocational education and training is a sort of introduction as it gets employees
ready for the workplace which comes handy while performing various tasks.

Due to the nature of the skills it imparts, a student doesn't consider its utility
as compared to academic education. Vocational education as the term itself
denotes the students are specialised and therefore they have more chances
of employment as compared to others.

Many students who are in a dilemma whether they should attend college or
not, vocational education really opens new door.

Career of one's own choice is one of the major benefits of this education. A
vast majority of people are caught in the wrong jobs because they were in it
for the sake of job, money, lack of alternative and professional compromise
where as an individual pursuing Vocational Education is pursuing his dream .

Technical programs develop the economy by bridging the demand and supply
gap with highly skilled workers. It also gives students the opportunity to take
marketable skills from the classroom directly into the working world.

School drop-outs and adults can also receive this type of education as it
provides opportunity to learn a skill or trade. There are many well paid career
fields in which a college degree is not required.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

10

The aim of this study is to create awareness about the importance and implication of
vocational training in our educational curriculum and therefore the research design
that we have used is the Descriptive Research design.
DATA COLLECTION
Data collection in research is a detailed process in which a planned search for all
relevant data is made by our research team. The data that we have collected for our
research is primary data.
PRIMARY DATA
We have collected the data by the way of questionnaire and the survey has been
conducted in the STES CAMPUS .
SURVEY INSTRUMENT
A non structured questionnaire was used to collect the data, as there was no direct
or correct source of secondary data available for our research topic. Questionnaire
was useful to us in this regards, we had multiple choice questions in the
questionnaire.
SAMPLING DESIGN
After deciding the approach to our research and instrument the sampling plan was
decided which includes

Population: Students.
Sampling element- STES Students
The sample size that we have taken is 100.

SAMPLING METHOD
The study has employed convenience sampling method for the collection of data.
STATISTICAL TOOL

ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA:

13

1) Primary data is collected through questionnaire providing the respondents with

multiple choice questions and close ended questions.
2) As data is collected with the use of close ended questions and multiple choice
questions; analysis and interpretations of data is necessary to conclude.
3) Hence, different type of graphs such as pie chart is used to analyze the data.
4) This graph shows the different percentage of particular response and compares it
with each other.
5) So, the pie chart is a simple means of getting the data analyzed and to make the
comparisons as required.
6) From the pie chart it is easy to conclude the study to emphasis on vocational
training in the current education system

27

FINDINGS:-

The project emphasis on introduction vocational training in

curriculum
From the survey we get to know that most of the respondents
have practical based curriculum. Hence the need for vocational
training has to be evolved . Respondents have a regret not
having vocational training in past and they also think that
people who have past experience are more successful .Most of
the respondents agree to include vocational training in future
curriculum so that they can get prior knowledge of industrial
work culture.
Vocational training will generate more skilled and experienced
individual to industrial work culture.

28

SUGGESTIONS: Majority of the respondents suggested that vocational training

should be included in their curriculum and should be framed in
such a pattern that it will go hand in hand with what the course
emphasises on.
Students also suggested that vocational training should be
inculcated with internship and the field work what they get now, so
that its understanding with the real on the job structure will
increase.
It was also said that the education board should strictly see the
working of vocational training carefully with the help of which
students can reap more benefits .

Students also suggested that the placement and vocational

training should be well connected with each other administratively ,
so that the actual purpose of vocational training be reaped .

29

LIMITATIONS: Limited flexibility of work since you enter for specific

training you cannot move on other options
Time frame management for academic and vocational
training differ for different courses
Cost added on these vocational training with academic
curriculum should not burden students.
Awareness of vocational training is somewhere missing in
the students.
No program and workshop were conducted in high school
to bring vocational training in the concept of students.

30

CONCLUSION
From the study of research topic EMPHASIS ON
VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN CURRENT STUDIES we
concluded: Vocational training should be included in the current
curriculum to have prior knowledge of industrial work
culture.
Respondents having past vocational training are more
successful and thus who dont have it , regrets.
Most of the respondents are interested to have vocational
training in their future curriculum.
