6 RENEWABLES
Table 6.1. Renewable electricity capacity and generation
31 March 2016
2015
Total renewable generation in 2015, excluding non-biodegradable wastes, was a record 83.3 TWh. This compares with 64.6 TWh in 2014, an increase of 29 per cent.
Offshore wind generation increased by 30 per cent, to 17.4 TWh, while onshore wind generation rose by 24 per cent, to 23.0 TWh. These increases were due to increased capacity and high wind speeds, with average wind
speeds in 2015 the highest in the last fifteen years, and 0.6 knots (7.2 per cent) higher than a year earlier. Wind speeds in December were the highest since January 2007.
Hydro generation rose by 7.4 per cent, to a record 6.3 TWh, with rainfall levels (in the main hydro areas) in 2015 16 per cent higher than in 2014, the highest for four years, and the second wettest in the last fifteen.
Generation from bioenergy increased by 28 per cent on 2014, to a record 29.0 TWh. Within this figure, plant biomass generation increased by 44 per cent, due to a third unit conversion at Drax from coal to biomass in July 2015
and despite the closure of Ironbridge station in November 2015.
Generation from solar photovoltaics increased by 87 per cent, to a record 7.6 TWh, due to increased capacity.
Renewables' share of total generation in 2015 was 24.7 per cent, an increase of 5.6 percentage points on 2014's 19.1 per cent. *
In 2015, bioenergy represented 35 per cent of renewables generation (including 23 per cent from plant biomass and 5.7 per cent from landfill gas), while onshore wind had a 28 per cent share, with 21 per cent from offshore
wind, 9.1 per cent from solar photovoltaics, and 7.6 per cent from hydro.
At the end of 2015, there was 30.0 GW of installed renewables capacity, a 22 per cent (5.4 GW) increase on a year earlier. Onshore wind capacity increased by 0.6 GW (6.9 per cent), while offshore wind capacity also
increased by 0.6 GW (13.7 per cent), with several large wind farms opening, or continuing to expand during the year. For offshore wind, this includes the completion of Westermost Rough and Gwynt y Mor wind farms, as well as
the opening of Humber Gateway and the extension to Kentish Flats. Solar photovoltaic capacity contributed 3.5 GW (an increase of 66 per cent) with the majority of growth coming from large scale sites under the Renewables
Obligation (mainly in quarter 1, ahead of the closure of the RO to large-scale solar in April 2015), as well as increases in small scale Feed in Tariff sites.** Bioenergy contributed 0.6 GW of the increase, with 0.2 GW of new
Energy from Waste schemes, and a third unit biomass conversion at Drax offsetting the closure of Ironbridge in November 2015.
Onshore wind had the most capacity at the end of 2015, accounting for more than 30 per cent of all renewables capacity, while solar photovoltaics' capacity stood at slightly below 30 per cent, an increase of 7.9 percentage
points for the latter on it's 22 per cent in share at the end of 2014. Offshore wind's share of capacity was 17.1 per cent. Large and small-scale hydro represented 5.8 per cent of renewables capacity, while plant biomass had a
8.7 per cent share. Bio-energy (including wastes) as a whole had a 17.2 per cent share of all renewables capacity at the end of 2015.
Latest quarter
Provisionally, total renewable generation in 2015 quarter 4, excluding non-biodegradable wastes, was a record 23.8 TWh, an increase of 21 per cent from 19.7 TWh in 2014 quarter 4.
Generation from plant biomass increased by 30 per cent, from 4.2 TWh to 5.5 TWh, due to increased capacity mainly as a result of the conversion of a third unit at Drax from coal to biomass in July 2015. Bioenergy generation
as a whole increased by 21 per cent to 8.1 TWh.
Generation from offshore wind rose by 23 per cent, from 4.7 TWh to 5.8 TWh , while onshore wind increased by 21 per cent, from 6.0 TWh to 7.3 TWh, with increases in capacity and the highest Q4 wind speeds for four years
(at 10.3 knots, 0.9 knots above both a year earlier and the 10 year average).
Generation from solar photovoltaics rose by 55 per cent, from 0.5 TWh to 0.8 TWh, due to the large increase in capacity across the year.
Hydro generation rose by 2.6 per cent on 2014 quarter 4 to 1.8 TWh. Whilst rainfall was up 29 per cent on a year earlier (in the main hydro areas) for quarter 4 (the highest in a quarter since 2011 quarter 4), most of this
occurred later in the quarter, with the impacts therefore not wholly felt in the quarter. Whilst December was the wettest month in the last fifteen years, it was the driest October in twelve years (which followed the driest
September in fifteen years).
Renewables' share of total generation (88,381 GWh) in 2015 quarter 4 was a record 26.9 per cent, an increase of 5.0 percentage points on 2014 quarter 4 and 1.4 percentage points above the last record share set in 2015
quarter 2. The average wind speed and rainfall levels for quarter 4 were both above the 10 year mean for that quarter, but this was partially offset by average daily sun levels being the lowest for quarter 4 in fifteen years.
In 2015 quarter 4, 34 per cent of renewables generation came from bioenergy (including 23 per cent from plant biomass and 4.8 per cent from landfill gas), 31 per cent from onshore wind, 24 per cent from offshore wind, 7.6 per
cent from hydro and 3.5 per cent from solar photovoltaics.
At the end of 2015 quarter 4, there was 30.0 GW of installed renewables capacity, a rise of 1.2 per cent (0.3 GW) on 2015 quarter 3. An increase of 0.8 GW in capacity was offset by the closure of Ironbridge biomass station
(360 MW) in November 2015. Of the 0.8 GW installed during the quarter, 447 MW was from solar photovoltaic capacity, of which around 335 MW was accredited, or awaiting accreditation, under FITs.** Meanwhile, onshore
wind capacity increased by 203 MW, due to the opening of a number of wind farms (the largest being the 68 MW Strathy North), while offshore wind capacity remained unchanged following the completion of several
developments earlier in the year.
* Normalisation
It should be noted that for the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) (table DUKES 6.7), generation from wind and hydro is 'normalised' to account for variable generation due to weather conditions. When calculated, the
normalised share of generation may be greater or lower than the 19.1 per cent actual share presented here. On a normalised RED basis, the renewable electricity share of gross electricity consumption (total electricity
generation plus net imports less generation from pumped storage) increased from 13.8 per cent in 2013 to 17.8 per cent in 2014.
** Solar PV capacity
To note that the solar PV (and onshore wind) figures not only include installations confirmed on the FiTs scheme, but also a large number of sub 50 kW installations commissioned, and registered on the Microgeneration
Certification Scheme (MCS) that are awaiting confirmation on FiTs (as well as any capacity not supported by FiTs). In addition, the solar PV figures will also include installations accredited on the Renewables Obligation, and
any operational installations awaiting accreditation. Due to time differences between the production of tables, the solar capacity figures presented here may differ from those presented in the monthly solar deployment table,
available at: https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/solar-photovoltaics-deployment
Note about provisional data for latest quarter
It should be noted that generation data for the latest quarter are highly provisional. This mainly affects thermal technologies, such as landfill gas, where generation is largely in the hands of smaller generators. For these smaller
generators, data for the most recent month are not available, so are estimated.
Historical annual renewables data can be found in table DUKES 6.4. Overall electricity generation data can be found in table ET 5.1 at:
www.gov.uk/government/statistics/electricity-section-5-energy-trends
New country tables
Renewable electricity tables have been produced for the four UK countries, with data starting from 2011 Q1. In order to produce load factors, capacity as at the end of the year and quarter has been included, although not all the
capacity will have been in place, and thus generating, for the whole period. To avoid disclosure of company data, the generation sections are in a more compact format (e.g. onshore and offshore wind are combined).
For a small number of FiT schemes, location details are unknown, so the distribution across the GB countries has been estimated: all "unknown" hydro is assumed to be in Scotland; all unknown Anaerobic Digestion allocated
to England; Solar PV and Wind to all three countries, according to each country's share of the overall FiT Solar PV/Wind figure for that quarter. DECC will continue to review this allocation.
For solar PV and onshore wind, the country totals also include a re-allocation of sites attributed to 'Other sites' and 'Micro wind turbines' respectively, in DECC's Energy Trends article Renewable Electricity in Scotland, Wales,
Northern Ireland and the regions of England in 2013. See the footnotes beneath the England, Scotland and Wales worksheets for more details of the allocations of this.

1. Cumulative capacity at the end of the quarter/year

2. Includes the use of poultry litter and meat and bone.
3. Includes the use of straw and energy crops. Also includes enhanced co-firing (>85% biomass).
4. This is the amount of fossil fuelled capacity used for co-firing of renewables based on the proportion of generation accounted
for by the renewable source over the course of the year.
5. Generation figures for the latest quarter are highly provisional, particularly for the thermal renewable technologies (such as landfill gas) in the lower half of the table.
6. Actual generation figures are given where available, but otherwise are estimated using a typical load factor or the design
load factor, where known. All solar photovoltaic generation is estimated this way.
7. For 2009, shoreline wave and tidal are included in offshore wind.
8. Biodegradable part only.
9. Non-biodegradable part of municipal solid waste plus waste tyres, hosptal waste and general industrial waste.
10. Load factors are calculated based on installed capacity at the beginning and the end of the quarter/year. These can be influenced by the time in the period when new capacity
came online.
Load factors on an unchanged configuration basis, which consider just those sites operational throughout the year, are available annually in table DUKES 6.5, at:
www.gov.uk/government/publications/renewable-sources-of-energy-chapter-6-digest-of-united-kingdom-energy-statistics-dukes
11. Percentage change between the most recent quarter and the same quarter a year earlier; (+) represents a positive percentage change greater than 100%.

1. Cumulative capacity at the end of the quarter/year

2. Includes the use of poultry litter and meat and bone.
3. Includes the use of waste tyres, straw combustion, short rotation coppice and hospital waste.
4. Generation figures for the latest quarter are highly provisional, particularly for the thermal renewable technologies (such as landfill gas) in the lower half of the table.
5. Actual generation figures are given where available, but otherwise are estimated using a typical load factor or the design load factor, where known.
6. Includes co-firing, plant biomass, animal biomass and biodegradable part of energy from waste.
7. Load factors are calculated based on installed capacity at the beginning and the end of the quarter/year.
Data in this table remains provisional until DECC produces its annual regional renewable electricity article in September. At that point, 2008 to 2010 will also be revised to be consistent with the overall UK figures.
Data includes the addition of generation for sites without location information - in 2014, this was: Wind: 70.4 GWh; Hydro: 46.4 GWh; Solar: 6.2 GWh; Other biomass: 3.4 GWh
Data includes the addition of capacity for sites without location information - in 2014, this was: Wind: 56.3 MW; Hydro: 17.3 MW; Solar: 8.5 MW; Other biomass: 0.4 MW
