Optical access at its best a GPON system with a 2.5 Gb/s line rate and a 20 kilometer reach on an IP platform
that enables service providers to deliver triple play services

The Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU is

part of the ISAM product line, which has
a growing number of customers around
the world. It is a gigabit passive optical
network (GPON) standards-compliant
solution with a 2.5 Gb/s downstream and
1.2 Gb/s upstream line rate. The AlcatelLucent 7342 ISAM FTTU is ideal for delivering high bandwidth, IP-converged
triple play services (voice, video, and data)
to residential and business customers
cost-effectively. In addition to highest
performance, unmatched density, the
Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU can
be extended up to 20 kilometers and
shared by up to 32 subscribers per line,
or up to 64 subscribers per line on
shorter distances.

The system consists of an Optical Line

Terminal (OLT) in the Central Office and
various Optical Network Terminals (ONTs)
located on the subscriber premises. As
a comprehensive integrated solution, the
Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU has the
flexibility to deliver RF video, IPTV, data,
legacy and next-generation voice all on
a single platform. It offers the added flexibility to deliver RF video using a separate
wavelength over the same fiber. The
Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ISAM FTTU is managed by the Alcatel-Lucent 5523 AWS.
The system applies Alcatel-Lucent ISAM
technology for intelligent IP-based access.
This technology is designed for wirespeed performance with cost-effective
Ethernet switching and enhanced L2/L3
functions.

Proven performance eliminates the
guesswork regarding network design
and integration capabilities.
The large variety of ONTs enables
service providers to serve a variety
of subscribers and applications using
a single GPON platform.
The broad portfolio of security, fault
isolation and performance management tools reduce operational
expenses and expedite service
delivery to subscribers.
The unified management system for
fiber and copper access reduces complexity and operational expenses.
Multistage IGMP processing allows
faster IPTV channel changes, reduces
the upstream control message flow
and access bandwidth requirements.
Long-reach PON enables operationally
efficient central office consolidation.
Advanced dynamic bandwidth management allows prioritization per
service and user with the ability to
burst up to the full line rate. This
guarantees very high quality of
service, future safeness and makes
optimal use of electronics, fiber
optics and distribution facilities.

Optical Line Terminal (OLT)

The Alcatel-Lucent 7342 Optical Line
Terminal (OLT) performs cost-effective
aggregation to edge IP network switch/
routers. It is a chassis-based system with
a highly scalable backplane architecture. The OLT has 14 interface slots for
GPON line termination cards and two
slots for network termination cards.
Services are delivered via GPON interfaces using a single fiber with two
wavelengths (receive and transmit)
multiplexed together. An optional third
wavelength can also be multiplexed for
downstream RF video over the same
fiber. The Alcatel-Lucent 7342 line termination cards support 4 ports each, thus
providing up to 56 PON interfaces in
total. The GPON interfaces comply with
Full Service Access Network (FSAN)
recommendations and International
Telecommunications Union Telecom
(ITU-T) sector standards for optics,
line rates, data transfer protocol and
management interface.
Network traffic aggregation and uplink
is done using the network termination
cards. The network termination cards
include a 48 Gb/s Ethernet switch fabric
with four integrated Gigabit Ethernet
(1 GigE) uplink interfaces using small
form-factor pluggable (SFP) optics, as
well as a single 10 GigE uplink interface
using XFP pluggable optics. Two network
termination cards can be equipped for
redundancy and load sharing, enabling
96 Gb/s switching capacity. The AlcatelLucent 7342 OLT can terminate up to
3,584 subscribers using a 1:64 split when
the system is equipped with 56 GPON
terminations.

Optical Network Terminals

(ONTs)
The 7342 OLT is complemented with a
wide range of ONTs in numerous form
factors and configurations to meet a
variety of subscriber applications. All
ONTs are designed to deliver triple play
services and different ONT types can be
used concurrently on a PON in a 7342
ISAM FTTU GPON network. In addition,
the Business ONTs include E1 emulation
interfaces for applications such as TDM

private lines, 2G/3G wireless backhaul

etc. Service providers can mix ONT
models on a single GPON termination
to meet the service demands of both
residential and business subscribers. For
more information on ONTs, please refer
to the Alcatel-Lucent 7342 ONT Family
datasheet.
