Tynemouth Firsts Felled but Debnam is Axeman for Seconds!

Tynemouth’s First XI had the short trip to Gateshead Fell, batted first and suffered a nine
wickets defeat. Openers Dan Young and Iain Purdy went cheaply, both to former team mate
Barry Stewart and then new man Josh Giddens and skipper Andrew Smith held on for a while.
Smith fell lbw to Turner for 17 and Giddens (19) was Stewart’s third victim to give him 3-32
from his 13 overs. Andrew Lineham managed double figures but the mainstay of the rest of the
Tynemouth innings was Greg Hollins with a perky 53 including six boundaries before he was
caught by that man Stewart. A laboured innings of 51 overs ended with Tynemouth dismissed
for only 147 and now really in need of a break!
The Fell reply was assured with opener New Zealander Tom Latham hitting 79 not out. He
shared an opening stand of 111 with Richard Steel who made 38. Dan Young claimed his
wicket but Turner and Latham saw the Fell home in comfort. Ed.
Meanwhile, the reverse fixture saw Tynemouth Seconds achieve a convincing 84 run win at
home to Gateshead Fell and secure a maximum 30 points. Tynemouth skipper Graeme Hallam
won the toss and elected to bat. The move didn't immediately pay dividends as the new ball
accounted for Tony Lion caught behind and Hallam himself lbw with only 30 on the board.
However, a fine partnership between Richie Straughan and Ben Debnam added 63 for the third
wicket. Both batsmen played some aggressive shots and it came as a surprise when Straughan
fell for 36. Ian Stewart fell 6 runs later leaving the innings in the balance. Chris Beever joined
Debnam who by now was in full flow. Debnam’s fifty came with a cover drive for three in the
34th over from a total of 137 at the time. Beever then fell lbw for 18 leaving Debnam to
dominate the later innings, ably supported by Josh Koen. Koen fell for 11 at 198 trying to add
quick runs. In the 48th over Debnam brought up his hundred to great applause. He eventually
fell in the 49th over for 111, allowing skipper Hallam to declare at 227-8 off 50 overs.
The Tynemouth bowlers made quick inroads to the Fell innings. Russell Perry had Walker
caught at slip off his first ball and with Josh Koen trapping Dodds LBW for 1, the visitors
stood at 2-1. There was then a steady fall of wickets. The combination of bowler Ed Snelders
and wicket keeper Ian Stewart accounted for Roseby (20) and Orridge (20) and with Chris
Beever taking a diving caught and bowled Fell were 77-5. Arkle was then smartly stumped by
Stewart to give Andrew Davison his first wicket and when Beever removed mainstay Lowe for
60 the game was in the bag. Josh Koen made short work of the tail with three wickets in four
balls to dismiss Fell for 143. Koen finished with 4-24, Perry 1-14 off 7 overs, Beever 2-36 off
9, Snelders 2-22 off 6 and Davison 1-28 off 6 overs. Perry’s Pen!
The Seconds progressed to the next round of the Premier League Banks Cup with a record
228 run win over Stockton at Preston Avenue. Batting first, Tynemouth made a massive 347-5
off 45 overs. Richie Straughan (41) and Marcus Turner (50) made a century opening
partnership before falling in quick succession. Ben Debnam continued his rich vein of form,
adding 119 for the third wicket with Tony Lion. Lion was in imperious form smashing 3 sixes
and 7 fours in a quick-fire 76. He was dismissed with 237 on the board off 35 overs. Debnam
received able support from Sam Robson. Debnam eventually fell for 80, bowled by Ward.
Robson and Hallam continued the onslaught with Hallam falling for 24 just before the end,
leaving Robson 48 not out.
Chasing such a mammoth score Stockton were in early trouble. Josh Koen dismissed Ward (7)
and Baleci (5) with only 14 on the board. A 54 run partnership between Seymour and Ward
brought some hope to the visitors. Robson then bowled Seymour for 31 and when Perry picked
up Ward bowled for 36 and then had Phinn caught at slip by Hallam for a duck the visitors
were struggling at 82-5. This became 84-6 when Robson stuck again removing Reeve for 2.
Off spinner Ben Richardson then cleaned out the tail with figures of 4-23 to dismiss Stockton
for 119.
In the ECB Under 15 National Knockout Cup Tynemouth travelled to Seaton Burn. Their total
of 98-5 was largely through the efforts of skipper Alex Tait (38) and Elliott Bayley who made
16. In reply, Seaton Burn struggled against some good bowling. Sam Maguire picked up 3-6
off his four overs with 2 wickets each for Elliott Bayley, Alex Tait and Jacob Swallow as the
home side were restricted to 76-9 off their 20 overs. Perry’s Pen Strikes Again!
Wear your Tynemouth Colours
Team kit for the First X1 and Second X1 is now being made available. Both of these teams are
required to have Colour clothing for the 20/20 competitions so, as a club, we ordered sufficient
sets of kit for both teams. The pack contains one 20/20 top, one white playing shirt, one white
SS Jumper, and one cap. The cost of these is £50 per pack and we would be grateful if all First
and Second X1 players were to buy these from the club. Payment details will be made available
when the kit arrives. A "splash top" will also be made available at a later date.
For all other players who would like to order Tynemouth CC kit you can go online at CF
Sports and if you enter "Tynemouth" in the relevant search box you will be directed to their
page for our specific kit.
Questions should be directed to Graeme Hallam: Graeme.Hallam@googlemail.com .

In the SG Wealth Management Northumberland League, Tynemouth’s third string (photo
opposite) travelled to Wardley to play Gateshead Ethnic Minorities (GEM) and fielded first.
The soft, variable bounce wicket aided opening bowlers Max Robertson and Jack Beaumont
but the GEM openers took advantage of any short balls which held up invitingly. Don Catley
came on after Beaumont’s first four overs and made the breakthrough thanks to a wonder catch
from Angus Robertson. Chris Fairley then did a double catching act for Max Robertson and
GEM were 34-3 by the 10th over. Max Robertson then obliged Catley with yet another good
Tynemouth catch and Richard Hay came on to claim two wickets with skipper Paul Coates also
claiming a catch. GEM had moved on slowly from 65-4 in the 20th over to 101-6 in the 30th.
Tynemouth were hopeful of keeping the score to 120 but S Shah had other ideas. Batting at
number 6 he dominated the remainder of the innings with a correct style and 68 not out to take
GEM to a much improved 211 all out in the final over, despites Coates’ best efforts to vary the
attack. Wicket takers were Max Robertson 13-1-55-3, Beaumont 11-0-44-1, Catley 13-3-35-2
and Hay 9.1-0-36-3. Coates bowled an over for 4 runs to switch the ends round and gave Geoff
Simpson a promised bowl which shed 18 runs in his 2 overs. Catches might win matches but
Tynemouth lost the initiative mainly because of Shah, number 9 bat Tabshir with 37 and some
generous bowling.
The Tynemouth reply immediately faltered when Steve McLeod was the victim of an easy run
out. By the 7th over Tynemouth had scored 30 with Fairley and Chad Koen looking in control
of the difficult pitch. However, Koen was trapped lbw for 19 and wickets began to fall steadily.
By the 16th over the score was only 51, the mid-order batting had failed and Fairley fell as 6th
wicket down, caught for a patient 16. In the next over Angus Robertson was bowled without
scoring. Catley and Hay started a mini revival of the innings with all the tail trying their best to
at least reach the first batting point at 100. It was not to be with Catley 8, Hay 14, Max
Robertson 8 and Beaumont 4 not out taking the total to only 82 as GEM claimed their first
victory in this league at the second attempt. Opening bowler Y Bavlani 7-4-2-7, Z Shahid 3-21,
T Alam 2-10 and B Krishnan 2-10 took the wickets. Tynemouth have recorded one win and
one defeat with a chance to do the double over Old Record Players at home on Sunday 9th.
The Third Team were knocked out of the Thomas Wilson Cup by Whitley Bay: Tynemouth
113-6 with Chris fairley 44 surpassed by Whitley Bay’s 114-2 (Parkinson 41, Piper 36*) but
only in a last over clincher.

Tynemouth’s Sunday 3rd XI set off to a very cold and windy Sunderland. Sunderland’s
Skipper ‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ won the toss and inserted Tynemouth to bat first. Openers
Vince Howe and new skipper Ben Richardson put 72 on the board before Howe was stumped
for 39. Next into bat was Chris Fairley who set off at a very fast rate in which Fairley and
Richardson put on 32 before Richardson was yet again out on 49, caught and bowled by
Deverson! This led to Fairley and Richie Straughan putting on a quick 200 partnership with
Fairley finishing on 108 not out and R.Straughan 102 not out; a fantastic performance on the
batting front! Tynemouth finished with a massive score of 304-2 off their 45 overs. Pick of
the bowlers for Sunderland was young spinner Deverson 9-1-48-1.
In reply, Sunderland’s openers didn’t get off to a very promising start with ‘Benton Massive’
Ryan Bailey taking the first wicket aided by an excellent catch from debutant Lee Reed. The
following over Conor Lonnberg comprehensively bowled B. Mitchell for a duck. Sunderland
was now struggling on 13-2. However opener W. Lewis and P. Smith put on a quick fire 30
before Louis Storey sent both of them back to the pavilion. Sunderland then didn’t have much
luck as a middle order collapse occurred with man of the moment Richardson claiming 4
wickets in quick succession. This led to Sunderland being 125-8 before Ryan Bailey took
another wicket by the help of a catch by ‘Bobby George’ at mid-wicket. From Sunderland’s 45
overs they only managed to make 131-9 with Tynemouth winning by 173 runs. Tynemouth’s
bowling figures: Lonnberg 9-4-13-1, Bailey 8-3-9-2, C Koen 9-2-22-0, L Storey 8-1-25-2,
Taylder 6-0-26-0 and Richardson 6-2-25-4.
A great start to the Sunday Third’s season Keep it up lads! Ben’s Blarney.
