3. In 2001, two CWSS partners, Harry and Ron, started a water purification business enterprise with a
Malaysian partner, Ginny, in Kuala Lumpur. Harry invested S$10 000, Ron invested S$50 000 and
Ginny invested RM97 500. They have contractually agreed that all profits should be divided in the
same ratio as the sum of money they invested.
(a)
Given that in 2001 when they started the business, the exchange rate between Singapore dollars
and Malaysian Ringgits was S$1 = RM1.5, calculate Ginnys share of investment as a percentage
of the total investment.
[2]
(b)
In 2004, Rons share of profit was S$14 000 more than Harrys share. Calculate the total profit in
2004.
[2]
(c)
According to the 2004 end of year financial statement, the total profit was 25% higher than that
in 2001. Calculate the total profit in 2001.
[2]
(d)
In 2006, Ginny decided to sell her share of the water purification business enterprise and was
compensated with S$60 000. She converted this sum to Malaysian Ringgit and realised that she
made a profit of 35% relative to her initial investment of RM97 500. If the exchange rate at the
time when Ginny decided to sell her share of the business was S$1 = RMx, calculate the value of
x, correct to 2 decimal places.

(c)
Write down in terms of n, the number of sticks needed in the nth pattern.

(d)
Explain why 500 sticks cannot be used to form one of the patterns, and suggest a number nearest
to 500, which can be used to form the pattern.
