ERAP: I WILL LEAD; MAR: NOY OR NOTHING

low a failure of elections sce-
nario to snatch away his im-
minent victory and will in
fact lead protests against at-
tempts to derail the elections
on May 10.
In a press conference—his
second in four days—at the
Club Filipino in his bailiwick
of San Juan, Mr. Estrada, stan-
dard bearer of the Pwersa ng
Masang Pilipino, said he
was constrained to call the
conference and issue the
warning in the wake of the
“suspicious, extensive
glitches” in the voting ma-
chines to be used by the Com-
mission on Elections.
These events, he said, have
in turn “fanned the flames
of speculation that there
could be failure of elections,
and that what the people
had in fact been eagerly an-
ticipating could turn out to
be an exercise in futility.”
At the same time, Mr.
Estrada said he was basing
his optimism on his chances
of returning to Malacanang
on the strength of recent
voter preference surveys,
which showed him practi-
cally neck-and-neck with the
erstwhile frontrunner, Sen.
Benigno Aquino of the Lib-
eral Party.

Roxas unwilling to be VP for any other president
Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Sen. Noynoy Aquino and
his running mate Sen. Mar Roxas have one common denomi-
nator-they are not prepared to lose this election, a mindset that
alarms the public.
Aquino has earlier made a pronouncement that only elec-
toral fraud could stop him from being President. Roxas shares
his running mate's overconfidence, so much so that he is
unwilling to become vice president to any other presidential
aspirant, who may just win the May 10 elections.
Even hypothetically, Roxas does not want to entertain the
thought of working with another president besides Aquino.
When asked in a television interview on Wednesday night
if he was willing to support Sen. Manny Villar if the Nacionalista
Party (NP) standard-bearer would win as president, Roxas's
answer was noncommittal.
He was asked: "Kung sakaling si Manny Villar ang
manalong pangulo, susuportahan nyo ba sya?
Makikipagtulungan ba kayo at kalilimutan nyo ba ang away
pulitika?"
Roxas's replied: "Tiyak ako na ang mananalo ay walang
iba po kung hindi si Senator Noynoy Aquino [I am sure that
Sen. Noynoy Aquino will be the winner and no one else.]"
When pressed that another candidate may emerge as the
president on May 10, Roxas even arrogantly replied that who-
ever asked the question is wrong.

QC to become model for public education – Mathay
QUEZON City mayoralty candi-
date Mel Mathay, Jr. vowed to make
the city a model for the public educa-
tion system in the country.
“With the current income and ap-
proved budget of the city government,
Quezon City should be at the forefront
of developing the best public school
system in the country,” Mathay said.
“We already have the infrastruc-
ture and financial capability. But
sadly, it seems that education has taken
a back seat in this administration’s
list of priorities,” he added.
Mathay said improving the edu-
cational system should be continu-
ous and should focus on narrowing
the gap between public and private
schools.
No less than the United Nations
itself warned that the poor is in dan-
ger of being left behind in education
because of the absence of decisive
political leadership.
The UN’s 2010 Education For All
(EFA) Global Monitoring Report even
cited the country as a “particularly
striking example of under-perfor-
mance” in educational reforms be-
cause current policies failed to make
a difference in improving education
of the poorest Filipinos.
Mathay said the disparity between
the students of public and private
schools has become so evident that
graduates of public schools need to
double or triple their efforts to be able
to compete with their private school
counterparts.
