Subject: Science

Grade VI
Answer Key
Answer in one word or sentence:
1.. the animals who provide us with milk , such as cow , goat, buffalo etc
2. The method of preparing compost with the help of red worms is called vermicomposting.
3. A landfill is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste
treatment. It is a low lying open area, in which non-useful garbage is dumped
Answer briefly:
4. The animals that feed on both plants and animals are called omnivores, e.g., humans, crow
Flesh eating animals are called carnivores. Eg lion
5 Natural fibres: Wool and Jute. Wool is an animal fibre which is obtained from silkworm and jute is
a plant fibre obtained from plant. (ii) Synthetic fibres: Acrylic, Polyester and Rayon. These are manmade fibres and are prepared from different chemical substances.

6 . We need to separate different components of a mixture for the following reasons : To remove
useless components e.g. removing tea leaves after making tea. To separate two different but useful
components e.g. Churning milk to obtain butter We need to separate different components of a mixture
for the following reasons : To remove useless components e.g. removing tea leaves after making tea.
To separate two different but useful components e.g. Churning milk to obtain butter. To remove
impurities. For example, obtaining salt from svveawater.
7 The changes, which can be reversed by reversing the conditions, are called reversible changes. For
example : (i) Conversion of ice into water by heating. (ii) Stretching a rubber band.

8. Biodegradable is referred to all those things that can be easily decomposed by

natural agents. Biodegradable substances includes food waste like vegetable and fruit
peels, dead plants and animals, chicken, egg shells, paper materials, garden waste

Those materials which cannot be broken down or decomposed into the soil by natural
agents are labelled as non-biodegradable. These substances consists of plastic
materials, metal scraps, aluminum cans and bottles, hazardous chemicals
Answer the following questions:

9. Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants prepare their food. In this process, green plants
trap sunlight with the help of the chlorophyll present in them and synthesize the sugar known as
glucose from carbon dioxide and water. In the process oxygen is given out from plants as a by-product.
10. Take a small quantity of food item and put 2-3 drops of dilute iodine solution to it.If it turns blue or
black in colour, it indicates the presence of starch in the food item
11 Jute fibre is obtained from the stem of the jute plant . It is cultivated during the rainy
season. In India, jute is mainly grown in West Bengal, Bihar and Assam. The jute plant is
normally harvested when it is at flowering stage. The stems of the harvested plants are
immersed in water for a few days. The stems rot and fibres are separated by hand

12. The process of making yarn from fibres is called spinning. In this process, fibres from a mass of
cotton or wool are drawn out and twisted. This brings the fibres together to form a yarn. Devices
which are used for spinning are spindle(takli) and charkha.

13. The process of conversion of water into its vapour is called evaporation. It takes place at all
temperature. For example, when seawater is allowed to stand in shallow pits, water slowly turns into
water vapours by absorbing the heat of the sun, leaving behind the solid salts

14. Winnowing is a method of separation which is used to separate heavier and lighter components of
mixture by wind or by blowing air. (ii) Difference in weights of the constituents lead to their
separation by winnowing. The method of handpicking can be used for separating slightly
larger sized impurities like the pieces of dirt, stone, and husk from wheat, rice or pulses
(Fig. 5.3). The quantity of such impurities is usually not very large. In such situations

15. The metal rim is made slightly smaller than the wooden wheel. On heating, the rim expands and
fits onto the wheel. Cold water is then poured over the rim, which contracts and fits tightly onto the
wheel.

16. A change I which new substances are formed with properties that are different from the original
substances is known as a chemical change. any two relvant examples
17. The stem carries water and mineral from the roots to the different parts of the plant. (ii) The stem
provides support to the branches, leaves, flowers and fruits

18. The design made by the veins on the leaf is called venation. If the design is net like, it
is termed as reticulate venation where as if the veins are parallel to each other, it is
termed as parallel venation.

19. 1. Length of the scale, that you are using to measure, must be greater than the
length of an object. 2. The eye must be placed just above the point, that you are reading,
otherwise there will be an error due to parallel. 3. If the zero mark of the scale is
damaged or the edge of the scale is not smooth, then start the measurement from
another mark

21 (a)Proteins are called body building foods because they are needed for growth and
repair of the body.
Eg meat and chicken
(b) Take a small quantity of food item in a test tube. Add 10 drops of water into it
and shake the test tube. With the help of a dropper, add two drops of copper sulphate
solutionand ten drops of caustic soda solution to the test tube. Shake the test tube and
let it stand for a few minutes. The appearance of voilet colour indicates the presence of
proteins in the food item
22. A leaf is a thin expanded outgrowth arising from the node of a stem. The part of a
leaf by which it is attached to the stem is called a petiole. The broad green part of the
leaf is called Lamina. The lines on the leaf are called veins. The thick vein in the middle
of the leaf is called the midrib.
23. Draw a curved line CD. Take a thread and make a knot at one of its end. Keep the knot made in

the thread on point C of the line. Place a small portion of the thread along the line, keeping it taut
using your fingers and thumb. Keep on stretching the thread on the curved line till you take the thread
to the point D of the line. Make a mark on the thread where it touches the other end of the line at point
D. Now, stretch the thread along a metre scale and the length between the knot in the beginning and
mark on the thread is measured through scale. This measured length on scale will give you the length
of the curved line CD
(b) Rectilinear motion means motion along a straight line march-pastof soldiers in a parade or the
fallingof a stone.
Periodic motion, in physics, motion repeated in equal intervals of time. Periodic motion is performed,
for example, by a rocking chair, a bouncing ball, a vibrating tuning fork, a swing in motion, the Earth in
its orbit around the Sun,
