PERSUASIVE SPEECH WORKSHEET

Your Name

Jenner Feijoo

General Purpose

To persuade

Specific Purpose

To persuade my audience (that/to) Stem cells are very useful and

they can be used in ill treatment.
Embryonic stem cells are really useful, and they are not the ending
of a life. They can also become any kind of cell in the body

Your Argument

INTRODUCTION:
I.

Attention Material (i.e. the hook)

a. A story or example that sets the scene for your reader and gets them interested in what
you want to argue. I will tell you this story that I took from Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute :Esther Zaff, a 35-year-old in Washington, DC, with a husband, 2-year-old
daughter, and a job helping non-profit organizations with their fundraising. She has lived
for the past 10 years with aplastic anemia complicating a rare, progressive bone marrow
failure syndrome called dyskeratosis congenita (DKC), which has recently worsened to
the point where she is in dire need of a stem cell transplant. After the transplant the only
thing that the woman could say was She didn't just give me back my life, she gave me
back my whole world. Every day I wake up and walk into my daughter's room, I think
about Jaime. Every single day. Without her, I'm not here. Because of her, I am.
b. A clear segue that tells the reader, I use this story in order to discuss the issue of the real
useful behavior of the stem cells in cancer and why they can save a life which seemed
lost.
II.
Orienting Material
a. Statement of your argument (In this speech, I want to argue that stems cell a really
useful and add why embryonic stem cells could work better than adult stem cells)
b. Reason why this issue is important, and why people should care
There are many illness such as cancer that make people lose many of their
cells in the body, and its possible to recover them using the power of stem
cells.
c. Discussion of where you are getting the research youll cite in your speech
I took the information from companies which work with stem cells,
international organizations and research papers and articles about this
topic.
d. Definitions for any crucial terms youll be using in your speech.

Stem cells: They are cells who can specialize in any kind of cell
Embryonic stem cells: Stem cells obtained from blastocysts after 5 days of
the fertilization
Adult stem cell: Stem cells obtained from adults that cannot specialize in
any kind of cell.
Blastocyst:
ISSCR:
So, its necessary to know why stem cells are so useful and why embryonic stem cells
could be a more effective way to treat patients.
BODY:

Statement of Reasons for Argument: Reason #1

Stem cells can be transplanted to one person to another

a. Further explanation of reason #1

For example Dana-Forber Cancer Institute cares about cancer transplant,
and this company do transplant for children to adult, and the results shows
that this kind of operations could increase the life hope for the people who
suffer this illness
b. Evidence to back up reason #1 On of the evidence of the reality of this kind of treatment
is the example of Esther Zaff that I made before.
IV.

Statement of Reasons for Argument: Reason #2

Embryonic stem cells are easy to get.
a. Further explanation of reason #2
Embryonic stem cells are obtained from the inner mass of blastocysts and they
come from the result of an in vitro fertilization. Embryonic SCs can generate
any kind of cell in the body, so this helps to know about early human
developmental processes, and also can lead to replace or restore damaged
tissues as the ISSCR mention in its page.
.
b. Evidence to back up reason #2

V.

Statement of Reasons for Argument: Reason #3 Its possible to take advantage from
cloning to create new stem cells.
a. Further explanation of reason #3 As I saw in a Dnews video on youtube called First
cloned human embryos yield stem cells, it is possible to use cloning to obtain embryonic
stem cells stem cells of the blastocyst. Those stem cells are 100% compatible with the
organism they come from, because they are his or her cells!. And that allows the
treatment of diseases, and any kind of treatment with Stem cells.
b. Evidence to back up reason #3

(You may add more than three Reasons for Argument if you desire.)
(You must put a transition sentence, here)
VI.

Statement of Objection to your Argument: #1

a. Further explanation of the objection
b. Your refutation of the objection
c. Evidence to support your refutation

VII.

Statement of Objection to your Argument #2

Further explanation of the objection
Your refutation of the objection
Evidence to support your refutation
(You may add more than two Objections and Refutations if you desire)

VIII.
