INTRODUCTION
TheaimofthissoftwareistoassisttheuserincalculatingtheCFRPdimensionsrequiredtoprovide(a)flexural
strengthening,(b)shearstrengtheningand(c)columnconfinement.Thesethreetopicsaredealtwithinthenext
sections,whichpresentthetheoreticalbasisofthecalculations.
ThecalculationproceduresemployedinthisprogramarebasedonthefibBulletinNo.14:"Designanduseof
ExternallyBondedFRPReinforcementforRCStructures".Additionalandauxiliarycalculationmethodsaretaken
fromEurocode2:Designofconcretestructures,aswellasEurocode:Basisofstructuraldesign.

FLEXURALSTRENGTHENING

Reinforcedconcreteelements,suchasbeams,slabsandcolumns,maybestrengthenedinflexurethroughtheuse
ofFRPcompositesepoxybondedtotheirtensionzones,withthedirectionoffibresparalleltothatofhightensile
stresses(memberaxis).ThecalculationsdescribedbelowaddressboththeUltimateLimitState(ULS)andthe
ServiceabilityLimitState(SLS).
Forthedesign,theparabolarectangular
methodisusedbythesoftwaretodetermine
thecompressivestrainandstressratioofthe
concreteacrossthesectionsheight(Fig.21).
Thedesignvaluesforthereinforcingsteelare
derivedfromthecharacteristicvalues,fyk.In
thecaseofULSverifications,thesoftwareuses
asimplifiedbilineardiagram,withahorizontal
branchextendingfromthepointwherefydis
achieved(Fig.22).

noloadsafetyfactorsareapplied)actingatthecriticalcrosssectionduringstrengthening(e.g.duetotheself
weightofthestructureandanyadditionalloadactingatthetimeofthestrengthening),andmaybecalculated

Theultimatelimitstatesareassociated,amongothers,withthefailureofastructuralmemberandtheygenerally
concernsafetyofpeople.
Fortheverificationoftheultimatelimitstate,designactionswillnotexceedthedesignresistanceofthestructure.
Onceoiscalculated,theanalysisofthecriticalcrosssectionfortheULS(UltimateLimitState)isperformedonthe

2.2
SHEARSTRENGTHENING
ShearstrengtheningofRCmembersusingFRPmaybeprovidedbybondingtheexternalreinforcementwiththe
principalfibredirectionasparallelaspracticallypossibletothatofmaximumprincipaltensilestresses,sothatthe
effectivenessoftheFRPismaximized.Forthemostcommoncaseofstructuralmemberssubjectedtolateral
loads,themaximumprincipalstresstrajectoriesintheshearcriticalzonesformananglewiththememberaxis
thatmaybetakenroughlyequalto45o.However,itisnormallymorepracticaltoattachtheexternalCFRP
reinforcementwiththeprincipalfibredirectionperpendiculartothememberaxis(Fig.222).
