How to Start at

Generation 14

INTRO:
Five years ago we began with an idea and a vision to transform Chile into the innovative
and entrepreneurial hub of Latin America. No one associated Chile - a long, narrow
country, towered over and sealed shut by the Andes Mountains with innovation and
entrepreneurship. But we saw an opportunity to create something revolutionary.
And so Start-Up Chile was born.
Leveraging the power of global entrepreneurs, and with support from the Chilean
government, Start-Up Chile has literally knocked down barriers and has transformed
Santiago into a vibrant and flourishing startup ecosystem.
More than 16,000 startups have applied to Start-Up Chile and 1,000 have passed
through the program.
From a radical idea to a global community, we have made history and impacted thousands
in the process.

You were chosen to join us in our mission to

transform Chile. We believe in you and have
high expectations of what you will accomplish
in the time we will spend together.
Welcome to the Start-Up Chile Family!

1. Landing
Getting Started

Quick Note:
Please remember that it is strongly advised for you to arrive to Chile a few days before the program starts so
you can sort out housing arrangements and start the program without any worries.
During your first week in Start-Up Chile (SUP), we will focus on the different procedures that must be
completed to acquire your Chilean ID card, open a bank account, get a cellphone contract and receive
program orientation. Our goal is that you have a smooth landing in Chile.
Please read the following important information that will give you an overview of basic guidelines for
your Start Up Chile life.
This is an interactive map that can give you geographical sense of the city.

Housing and Accommodation

The program budget for accommodation is $150.000
CLP per week for teams that applied with two or
three participants. For those who applied as a single
person team, the limit is $100.000 CLP per week.

If you stay in a hostel or hotel, you need to present a

valid tax invoice (in Chile this is called a boleta or
factura de exportacin).
Remember that you must present the original
documentation in order to get it approved, so keep
your receipts in a safe place.

Temporary Accommodation
Permanent Accommodation
A good option is to stay near our office in Lastarria or
in Providencia. Please consider that in Chile,
Airbnbs invoices are not considered valid to
present for the grant because they are not legal
taxable documents. In order to get your
accommodation expenses approved as part of your
Start-Up Chile budget, you need to present a valid
and original rental contract with the owner of the
apartment. It is required that this contract is signed
in a notarys office.

There are several agencies that are committed to

giving you the best rate and up to 10%20% discount
on the agency commission if you tell them that you
are a member of Start-Up Chile. Please note that this
agency commission fee is not reimbursable by StartUp Chile (hotels do not charge an agency fee or
deposit). The same criteria is used with the contracts
and invoices as mentioned above.

Tips:
References from ex generations and board
discussions are the best way of getting to know the
best deals in town.
Search for discussions on Dashboard or on
Facebook Participants Group. The reference from
past generations is your best source of information.

ID and Start-Up Chile Contract

On the first week of your arrival, with the help of the
Start-Up Chile team, you will visit the International
Police Office to register your visa and get the
necessary papers to obtain your chilean ID card
Temporary RUT Paper

Visa Registration Document

Once your visa has been registered, you will visit the
Civil Registry Office where you will complete the
necessary paperwork to obtain your Chilean ID Card
and Rol nico Nacional (RUN) number.

They will give you a temporary paper while they

process the actual ID card.
As soon as you receive the ID certificate from the Civil
Registry, you must provide a copy of this document
to your Account Executive that same day. You can
send a picture of it or scan it, but it must be legible.
Why is this important? Because without it we cant
begin your contract process with CORFO (mandatory
to be legally considered as a Start-Up Chile project)

The whole contract process could last approximately

two weeks. At the end of that period you will receive
an email notifying that you are legally in the program
(the 24 weeks of the program starts at that point, so
you need to consider a total of 7 months in Chile).

Start-Up Chile Contract

Your Chilean ID card will be ready approximately

three weeks after it has been requested. Please note
that you will need to collect it from the same office in
which you made the request.

Chilean ID Card

Bank Accounts
We assist startups in opening a bank account with Banco
Edwards-Citi or Scotiabank.
This occurs in the first week of the program where we
organize for the bank's representatives to come to the StartUp Chile office to give you the opportunity to open an account
with them. In order to open an account, please note that you
will need to provide the following documents: copy of your
RUT, copy of your passport and a copy of your Start-Up Chile
invitation letter.

*Refer to Dashboard Discussion for more information

Cell Phone
You can also decide if you want to get a cellphone
contract with Virgin Mobile or Claro. The companies
will come to the Start-Up Chiles office to give you
more information and help you with the contract.

These are the important communication tools you need to be aware of:

FACEBOOK

DASHBOARD

Start-Up Chile Participants Group

http://dashboard.io/start-up-chile
This is an excellent way to add discussions, events,
get information about office hours, perks,
accommodation, visa process, etc.

Here you can post your thoughts, share news, and

social events. This is also a very good resource for
getting quick information and feedback from others
in the program. You need to request approval to gain
access to this group. Please remember this is only for
Team Leaders and Team Members, not interns or
employees. If you have not been accepted, check
with Maria Noel.

SUPPER FAMILY EMAIL

This email account will be used to send you official
information that isnt posted on Dashboard. If you
have any questions you should email the person who
is responsible for that issue. This email is one-way
only. Please dont reply to the Supper Family email
account.

4. Expenses
Technical & Financial Reporting

Before you arrive

By now, you already know who your Account
Executive (or AE) is. He or she is your lighthouse in
case you have any questions about the program.
Remember that they also have other tasks to
accomplish, so please read the T&C, before you
reach out with a question.
EVERY EXPENSE that you make before arriving to
Chile needs to be previously approved by your
Account Executive.

We dont reimburse COMPANIES, foreign or

national, we reimburse people. So, no invoices
addressed to Companies or paid from Business
Accounts, are accepted.

Invoices:

All invoice need to be addressed to the

Beneficiary of the grant (team leader in
application), or a team member of the
application.
All invoices can be accepted from the official
date that the application results are given. If
you dont know what that date is, then just ask
your AE directly.
Invoices addressed to companies are not
acceptable as part of the expenses filed for
the grant.
Remember to keep your boarding passes
from your flights coming to Chile, as this will
need to be presented in the first financial
meeting.

AirBnB receipts are not accepted, please be

sure to obtain a formal Invoice (for any
question ask your AE).
Your AE will help you in answering all the
questions that you might have about the
program, and will try to help you with your
specific needs regarding your project. The AE
will also follow up often on your project
regarding the progress being made, during,
platoons, and the mandatory milestone
meetings.

Start-Up Chile, as a part of the Chilean Government,

is regulated by national law. This is why you are
required to sign a legal contract and follow certain
protocols, which include living and staying in Chile for
at least 6 months, and file supporting documents
necessary for the beneficiaries (team leader) to
receive the grant.

There are two ways to receive the money:

The second installment is paid after the 12th

week of the program, as long as the first
installment expenses are approved. If the
members do not meet a minimum set of
development goals this second installment can
be withheld and not paid at all.
Note: You will need an Insurance Policy that
the program will help you to obtain, once you
arrive.

Lump Sum Agreement

Start-Up Chile pays you upfront. You spend the
money and then supporting documentation must be
presented to validate the expenses and get them
approved. The total amount is given in two
installments.

The first installment is given after the contract

is signed and approved by the program.

Reimbursement
You spend your own money. You then file
documentation for validating the expenses and SUP
reimburses you for the validated amount. In the end,
the supporting documentation asked will be the
same in both cases, the only thing that changes is the
way you receive the funds.

5. Acceleration
Knowledge, community and growth

At Start-Up Chile we strongly believe in helping you build awesome products. As a government program, we
may not look and feel like a traditional accelerator, but we have created a program to help you gain new
skills, build your network and grow your companies.

Intro Day
Intro Day is a mandatory pitch event during the first week of the
program. Each company is required to do a 3-minute pitch to their
peers, Start-Up Chile staff and program mentors.

Platoons
Platoons is a fancy name for peer feedback sessions. Each platoon
consists of approximately 8-10 companies that meet on a weekly basis.
The purpose of platoons is providing an opportunity to receive rapid
feedback from peers and to leverage the experience of other founders.
Platoon groups will be formed based on development stage / industry.
These sessions are mandatory (attendance of 75%).

Pitch Day
Pitch Day is a mandatory pitch event that occurs midway through the
program. Each company is required to do a 3-minute pitch. This event
forms part of the selection process to determine which companies will
participate in Demo Day.

Demo Day
Demo Day is an event that seeks to show-off the top startups from each
generation of Start-Up Chile. The participating companies have the chance
to present their company to potential investors and companies in Latin
America.

SUP Academy & Pitch Training

SUP Academy is exactly what it sounds like knowledge and learning. SUP
Academy consists of workshops, talks, meetups, etc., covering a wide array
of topics. Founders with expertise in specific areas are more than welcome
to organize their own activity and share with the community. Start-Up Chile
is also constantly bringing experts to SUP Academy. Pitch Training is a once
a week opportunity to work on the craft of pitching in front of peers and
moderators that will help you get better in your verbal skills.

Mentoring
Start-Up Chile has a large network of skilled mentors, however they are
not paid for their contributions. We take great lengths to protect their
time. You can sign up for office hours with specific mentors via the StartUp Chile staff.

6. Social Impact
Give Back

Why give back?

As a program we look to help local entrepreneurs reach
their goals and build a richer entrepreneurial
ecosystem, in order to connect Chile with the rest of the
world and show Chileans that it is possible to build
extraordinary companies.
So during your stay in the country we will ask you to help
us achieve our goal by spending some of your time
sharing your knowledge, skills and talents with local
entrepreneurs and students.
This is the social equity that we ask for!

How can you do this?

By participating in different programs with Chilean entrepreneurs, holding workshops or giving talks in
different cities of the country and engaging in mentoring, all within the realm of entrepreneurship and
innovation (business model, sales strategies, customer acquisition tools, etc.). Another way to give back is by
bringing new organizations and events to Chile. Examples in the past include Startup Weekend, Women 2.0,
TEDx and much more.
The Social Impact you make is going to be measure through a point scale, which will be described upon your
arrival at the Social Impact workshop.
