This homework is designed to give students the opportunity to research and investigate
further an area of Mathematics they have previously been introduced to.
Please remember to start this as soon as it is set so that you have enough time to
ask for help if you need it.
Objective: To design and produce a 3D box suitable as packaging for chocolates along
with its net and calculations of surface area and volume.
You have been asked by Billy Bonkas to design a new chocolate box for a brand new range of
chocolates. You can create the name for the chocolates.
Your final piece of work will be marked by your peers according to the following criteria:
1) APPEARANCE:
a) How well coloured and made your box is (4 marks)
b) How interesting the 3D shape is (10 marks)
2) ACCURACY: (6 marks)
a) How accurate the net of the shape is
i) Angles
ii) Stated dimensions (Lengths)
3) CALCULATIONS (4 marks)
a) How clear/ easy-to-follow are your calculations of surface area
b) How clear/ easy-to-follow are your calculations of Volume
Your final piece of work will also be levelled by your teacher according to the type of box
used and calculations produced. Below is a guide to the level of understanding needed for
certain shapes or processes.
Level 4 c) Able to draw lines to a given length and accurately measure angles
b) Able to draw rectangles accurately (i.e. produce a net of a cube)
b) Able to draw triangles
a) Able to calculate the area of a rectangle
Level 5 c) Able to calculate the area of a triangle
b) Able to calculate the area of compound shapes made from rectangles
and/or triangles
a) Able to show which edges of a net will match in the 3D shape
Level 6 c) Able to calculate the volume of a cuboid;
Able to calculate the area of a trapezium or parallelogram
b) Able to find the circumference of a circle
Able to construct the net of a tetrahedron
a) Able to calculate the area of a circle
Level 7 Able to find the volume of a prism
Level 8 Able to find the volume of a pyramid
