Agricultural Marketing Information Network (AGMARKNET) website is a G2C
e-governance portal launched by the Union Ministry of Agriculture in March 2000. It is
implemented by National Informatics Centre (NIC). AGMARKNET portal is available in 8
regional languages and English. AGMARKNET is an initiative towards globalisation of
Indian agriculture by the Ministry of Agriculture under Government of India. This portal
provides detailed information on the agriculture marketing reform, marketing research,
market profile, prices, agricultural commodities, commodity arrivals, contract farming, etc.
Details of commodities and agricultural markets are also provided along with market
bulletins. Currently, about 1,800 markets are connected and work is in progress for another
700 markets. The AGMARKNET portal now has a database of about 300 commodities and
2,000 varieties.
The Directorate of Marketing and Information (DMI), under it links around 7000 wholesale
markets in India with the help of State Agricultural Marketing Boards and Directorates for
proper information dissemination. It provides information related to generation and
transmission of prices, commodity arrival in various markets, and other web-based
information to producers, consumers, traders, and policy makers transparently and quickly
through a single window system. It has liaison with the State Agricultural Marketing Boards
and Directorates for Agricultural Marketing Development in the country. Agricultural
Produce Market Committee (APMC) displays the prevailing market prices on the notice
boards. The statistics of daily and annual arrival, sales and prices are maintained by APMCs.
It also links all the agricultural wholesale markets in the country and establishes strategic
alliances with government and non-government organizations to disseminate information to
the farmers and other users. The database developed under AGMARKNET is linked to other
agricultural databases, like, production, yield of crops, land use, cost of cultivation,
agriculture exports and imports, and so on, to evolve a data warehouse. This would provide a
sound base for planning demand-driven agriculture production. AGMARKNET is also
expected to play a crucial role in enabling e-commerce in agricultural marketing.
