Brief History of PT.Bukit Asam(Persero)Tbk


PT Bukit Asam (Persero) Tbk , was established on 2 March 1981 by virtue of
Republic of Indonesia Government Regulation No. 42 Year 1980. On 23 December 2002 the
Company was listed at the Indonesia Stock Exchange under PTBA tagline. Initially the
Company operated its coal mining business in two mines, i.e. Tanjung Enim Mining Unit
located 200 km southwest of Palembang, and Ombilin Mining Unit in Sawah Lunto, 90 km
southeast of Padang, but today the Company has mining operations in East Kalimantan in the
vicinity of Samarinda. In line with the national energy security development program, the
Company was assigned by the Government to develop coal briquette business in Tanjung
Enim South Sumatera, Natar - Lampung, and Gresik in East Java, and several subsidiaries
engaged in coal-related business. Hence, the Company is now running two business units,
coal mining operation and briquette production.
As circumstances evolve, the Companys business pursuant to Article 3 of the Articles
of Association has developed with the following activities:
1.Mining operation covering general research,exploration, exploitation, processing, purifying,
transporting and trading of mining products particularly coal.
2.Further processing of mining products particularly coal.
3.Trading products of the foregoing business activity,either its own or other parties
production, at home and abroad.
4.Managing and operating ports and piers specifically designated for coal.
5.Managing and operating thermal power plant.
6.Providing consultancy and engineering services in coal-mining-related fields and processed
mining output.
Strategy
The aim to become Indonesias leading environment friendly coal-based energy company is
achieved by six strategic steps:
Focus on the growth of coal production/sales.
Focus on projects with readiness scale 1.
Corporate restructuring.
Boost human resource competence and regeneration as well as promote a performancebased
corporate culture.
Improve remuneration system based on performance-based reward.
Promote performance rating in environmental management.
General Strategy
The Company realizes its vision and mission in several phases:
Focus on the growh of coal production and sales
This is to overcome transporation problem that lies in the limited loading capacity of
train being the only low-cost means of transport by increasing the loading capacity of existing
railway system and the port handling capacity.Stepping up production and sales is carried out
by optimizing the work of related units.
Focus on development projects
By constructing new railway tracks and ports,expanding Production Mining
Concession areas,developing Peranap and other mines, installing the Companys own thermal
power plants, developing coal sea transport.

Business Development
The Company has formulated Strategic Plan to be used as a guide and reference in
business operations and development with an aim to realize corporate vision and
mission.Three basic steps underline business development plan: income diversification,
facilities and infrastructure improvement and operating efficiency.

Reporting purpose
The purpose of making this report is to communicate our economic, environmental
and social commitment and performance to the stakeholders and public in a transparent
manner.Through this report we hope all stakeholders will gain a clear and transparent picture
of our sustainable development activities.
Reporting scope and limitation
This report discloses all operating performance aspects in the Companys mining
areas and any changes occurring in 2011, covering sustainable development, financial
condition and production output. However, our contractors environmental performance is not
reported in this report.
Reporting approach and content
This Sustainability Report continues to emphasize on reporting the Companys
program performance in reaching sustainable development and stakeholder engagement in
the development.
The content of this report covers the following:
Economic, social and environmental performance as required by GRI indicators. This years
report attempts to present all indicators within GRI standard.

Economy Performance
Contribution To The Nations Economy
During the year under review, the Company successfully capitalized on the escalating
coal prices by stepping up sales of high-calorie coal with better selling value and continued
the operatting efficiency drive. Consequently, the Company had a higher profit margin and
recorded a much better financial and operating performance than 2011.This is important
because maintaining profit growth amid all operating conditions is a prerequisite of a
company that is striving to grow continually.This is important because maintaining profit

continually.Constant good performance is also meaningful as it will allow the Company to
carry through its plans to participate in developing the community, as well as revegetating
and rehabilitating the environment surrounding its areas of operation.
This way, the determination to continue growing with three basic principles, i.e.
economic viability, environmental accountability and social responsibility, can be
accomplished.In 2011 the Company booked total net sales of Rp10.58 trillion, up 33.8% from
Rp7.91 trillion the preceding year. Total economic value generated was Rp10.98 trillion or

grew 33.8% from Rp8.21 trillion in 2011,due to other income (net) of Rp50.61 billion, gain
from forex differential of Rp24.62 billion, and interest income from bank and deposits of
Rp324.89 billion.Economic value was distributed to the stakeholders in the amount of
Rp10.25 trillion. The major part (53.79%) or Rp5.51 trillion was distributed to business
partners (mining contractors, PT KAI, etc.),the government (19.2%) or Rp1.96 trillion (for
tax,royalty, etc.), employees (13.8%) or Rp1.41 trillion and fund providers (12.5%) or Rp1.29
trillion.Rp2.05 trillion was retained by the Company to finance business activities in the
following years.
Analysis
:
The Companys operating results were used not only to enrich the shareholders, but
also to give something positive to the other stakeholders.
Contribution to the State
As a state-owned enterprise, the Company pays six contributions to the state: tax,
dividend, royalty(production provision fee), retribution, fixed contribution and import duty.
In 2011, total tax paid to the state amounted to Rp1,32 trillion, lower than Rp1,33 trillion in
2010. Royalty totaled Rp585.66 billion or increased 13.9% from Rp514.19 billion in 2010, as
a consequence of bigger production volume and different royalty calculation.
Another significant contribution to the state is dividend payment.For 2010 operating
results, dividend paid to the state amounted to Rp854.50 billion.So, total contribution to the
state in 2011 amounted to Rp2.82 trillion or increased 0.4% from Rp2.81 trillion in 2010. The
following graph shows the Companys contribution to the state (in Rp billion).In addition to
financial aid, the Company contributed in the construction of facilities and amenities.
Analysis
:
From the data described above, it can be concluded that PT Bukit Asam in 2011, its
contribution is increasing both financial and material given to the state. Especially in the
economic field.

Sustainable Corporate Governance


PT.Bukit Asam strive to improve the implementation of good corporate governance
by continuously reviewing and revising all regulating instruments, i.e. Board Manual, Code
of Conduct and GCG Code including corporate vision and mission which we socialize by
grade level to be learnt, understood and practised by all employees to ensure business
continuity.

Human Resources Management


Industrial Relationship with Employees
The Company regards the employees as strategic partners in running its business to
maximize profit, productivity and efficiency. The partnership is manifested in the
involvement of three parties, i.e. employees, Labor Union and the Company. In view of the
importance of the three-party working relationship, the Company earnestly supports the
formation and activity of Labor Union PTBA strongly supports the establishment and
activities of the United employees.

Analysis
:
Because of the important role the United Employees can act as a representative of
employees in a proposal, recommendation or views of the Board of Directors related to the
Company's operations for the common good.
Competence and Career Development
Currently the Company has a comprehensive organization structure with the functions
of human resource planning,development, education and training, personnel administration
and industrial relationship.The Company has a personnel requirement mapping of each unit,
supported by Prokes program and information technology in managing employee health
issue.The whole program requires a substantial amount of funds but the Company is
persistent in accomplishing its mission as human resource development is a worthy
investment for future business growth.
Recruitment
Basically,employee recruitment is open to anybody.However, to get qualified
employees, the Company sets several criteria in selecting people, which require applicants to
pass several qualification tests: thinking ability (analysis, problem solving and decision
making) teamwork spirit (communication and leadership) and stamina (motivation,
adaptation, learning spirit).Recruitment plan is made public in national and local mass media
as well as the Companys website.
PT.Bukit Asam manage employees as our strategic partners through transparent and
high standard recruitment process to obtain qualified personnel, providing well-directed
upgrading program, employee benefits commensurate with their contribution, creating a
healthy, comfortable and pleasant working envinronment in support of the Companys
sustainable business development.

Work Safety and Health


PT.Bukit Asam prove our commitment to work safety and health by implementing
world standard WSH policy, periodically assessing its implementation,providing health-care,
adequate working procedures and equipment, and regular training progams to create a safe
and healthy working environment.
To prepare itself in handling accident, fire and disaster, the Company conducted
Warehouse Fire & Rescue drill. It also took part in the 14th Indonesian Fire & Rescue
Challenge (IFRC), a competition and training of accident, fire and disaster rescue,participated
by 22 Mine Rescue Teams from all mining companies in Indonesia, hosted by PT Berau Coal,
East Kalimantan.
Work-related Accidents
To control work-related accidents, the Company formed Fire Control and Accident
Rescue Team under the coordination of Work Safety, Health & Environment (WSHE) Work
Force of Tanjung Enim Mining Unit, tasked to organize fire control and accident rescue. This
Team is also ready to work outside the premises as a manifestation of the Companys social
concern and responsibility.
Analysis
:
With the variety of countermeasures and programs to address the accident rate, then
expected PT.Bukit Asam to minimize future rate of workplace accidents occur.

Enviromental Protection
Environmental protection by PTBA(PT.Bukit Asam) is,among other

Analysis
:
With the program implemented in 2011 PT.Bukit Asam in order to protect the
environment, are expected to contribute the maximum to improve social welfare and
environmental protection.

Social and Environmental Responsibility Program


The Company consistently intensifies its Social and Environmental Responsibility
Program in terms of quantity and quality by organizing various activities focused on
improving the community living standard and natural conservation.The Company has
formulated a long-term integrated policy in the form of PTBA CSR Guidelines that were
endorsed by the President Director at the end of 2009. The guidelines focus on six main
areas: (1) economy, (2) environment, (3) human rights, (4) employment practices and proper
work conditions,(5) product responsibility, and (6) society.
These six main activities are in line with international standards of CSR
implementations as set by Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI), and formulated in the
implementation strategy based on business ethics/norms generally applied:
Sustaining economic development and community empowerment to improve the welfare of
local community and public at large.
Showing concern for environmental conservation,including restoration of post-mining
areas.
Guaranteeing non-discrimination and respect for human rights.
Ensuring good healthcare and work safety as well as employee welfare improvement.
Ensuring product safety and consumer satisfaction.
Nurturing a harmonious relationship with local community by applying good corporate
governance principles.
The Company cooperates with the Local Administration and other competent parties
to plan and execute its programs, and invites the local community to join in the planning,
executing and monitoring of the programs that directly affect the empowerment of the socioeconomic life of the mining community.
Analysis
:
With the above program are expected to giving direction towards carrying out CSR
activities, optimizing performance, adjusting to the needs and interests of the community, and
boosting the communitys potentials and self-reliance. The community is thus expected to
have a sense of belonging and safeguard the existence of the Company so it can continue its
business operations in a harmonious standing with the community and natural surrounding.
