Qualified and certified according to PETROJET
Written practice based on SNT - TC - 1A 1996
Edition.
NOTE : Examination shall be conducted by
personnel certified as level I or II.
Results shall be interpreted by personnel certified
as level II or III.
As per applicable Quality Control Plan
Description of equipment to be used is given in
the detailed data sheets
Scanning surface shall be free from loose scale
and weld spatter and shall be of sufficiently
uniform contour to permit a satisfactory acoustic
coupling.
Method for sensitivity setting is given in the
detailed data sheets.
Test block to be used shall be selected according
to FIG. 1
Block material shall be of the same material
specification or equivalent P No. and shall be in
the same heat treatment
( tempering )
condition as one of the material being examined.
P No. 1 , 3 , 4 and 5 materials are considered
equivalent. For examinations in materials were
examination surface diameter is greater than 500
mm ,a flat basic calibration block shall be used.
The basic calibration block shall be curved for
materials with diameters less than 500 mm ; the
examination surface shall be in the range of
curvature from 0.9 to 1.5 times the basic
calibration block diameter.

IMPERFECTION
SIZING
RECORDING

By the 6 db drop technique.

Where imperfections are noted the following information
shall be recorded:
A) Distance from nearest mark.
B) Length of imperfection in direction of weld principal axis.
C) Dimension of imperfection at right - angles to weld

principal axis , where applicable.

D) Dimension of imperfection measured in the through thickness direction.
E) Depth of imperfection below a given surface.
F) Enclosing volume for multiple imperfections.
G) Maximum echo height.
ACCEPTANCE STANDARD Only those indications whose echo heights , when
maximized , exceed the 20 % of the DAC shall be
investigated further. Imperfections interpreted as cracks ,lack
of fusion or lack of penetration are not permitted Others
imperfections are unacceptable if they exceed the amplitude
reference level (DAC) and discontinuities have lengths which
exceed the acceptance limitations of ASME VIII Div.1
Appendix 12 or ASME VIII Div.2 Appendix 9 Article 9-2 for
pressure vessels or ASME I (PW-52.3) for power boiler parts
or ASME B31.1 (136.4.6 (A)) for pressure piping
For repair work done according to NBIC, the acceptance
standard shall be as specified in the original code of
manufacture.
FINAL CLEANING The surface on which couplants have been applied shall be
cleaned after examination to eliminate any traces of oil ,
paste or similar couplant which might cause possible
defects during further welding operation on such surface ,
or when above surfaces need to be painted or whenever
cleanliness is requested by the applicable specification.
Cleaning should be made by solvents , water or by any
other suitable meanings.
REPORT All information specified in the relevant exhibit in Quality
Control Manual shall be recorded.

GENERAL NOTES:

(1) Holes shall be drilled and reamed a minimum of 1 1/2 in. deep , essentially parallel to the examination surface
(2) Alternatively, the block maybe constructed as shown in fig .
(c) Curved surfaces: for curved surfaces , two curved blocks , one for each representative curvature: or two sets of
calibration reflectors oriented 90 deg. from each other shall be used .
(d) Notches may be provided as required.
1
(e) The tolerances for hole diameter shall be /32 in. The tolerance on notch depth shall be + 10 and - 20 %. The
tolerance on hole location through the thickness shall be 1/8 in.
Note 1:
For each increase in weld thickness of 2 in. or Fraction thereof over 10 in., the hole diameter shall increase 1/16 in.
