Courses Attract Top Juniors for Summer Tournaments
Junior golfers from across the nation had the
opportunity to showcase their talents at
KemperSports courses this summer in some of
the biggest regional, national and worldwide
competitions.
Bolingbrook Golf Club held the inaugural World
Youth Team Challenge. The event, hosted by the
Illinois Junior Golf Club, was patterned after the
Ryder Cup with combinations of both foursome
and four-ball matches. The boys and girls were
grouped by age, ranging from 9 to 14. National
teams from South Africa, Mexico, Canada and the
USA and local teams from California, Wisconsin,
Indiana and Illinois competed June 11-14.

By the summer of 2009, southwest Michigan’s
lakefront landscape will look drastically different
when Harbor Shores Golf Club, an 18-hole Jack
Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, debuts in Benton
Harbor. The golf course will serve as a cornerstone
to Harbor Shores, the 530-acre, mixed-use
development that spans parts of the Benton
Harbor, St. Joseph and Benton Township
communities. At the forefront of revitalization
efforts are the Whirlpool Foundation, Cornerstone
Alliance and The Council for World Class
Communities. Collectively, the partners plan to
transform the vicinity’s former Whirlpool Corp.
industrial site into a flourishing Midwest
destination for visitors and residents.
Golf legend and course designer Jack Nicklaus
paid a visit to Harbor Shores on Aug. 12 to tour
what will ultimately become one of his signature
course designs.
Holly Hills Country Club in Maryland hosted
the best junior boys in the region during the
Middle Atlantic Golf Association Junior
Championship on June 28 and 29. A total of
24 boys played in this 36-hole, stroke-play
event. Holly Hills member Stephen Bosdosh
finished third at 146, just two strokes behind
the winning score of even-par 144.

Hawthorn Woods Country Club, Chicago’s
newly opened Arnold Palmer Signature Course,
hosted the American Junior Golf Association’s
(AJGA) 16th annual Midwest Junior Players
Championship on July 24-26. The 54-hole,
stroke-play event included a 99-person field
featuring many of the nation’s top junior boys
and girls ages 12-18.
“I am honored to design a golf course to
become the central amenity for a project
that will have such significant community
impact,” said Nicklaus. KemperSports,
currently overseeing development of Harbor
Shores Golf Club, will assume management
of the course upon opening.
“We look forward to working alongside
Jack Nicklaus and his design team to
capitalize on the area’s unique lakefront
location,” said KemperSports President
and COO Steve Skinner.
In addition to the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf
Course, Harbor Shores will feature a luxury
residential community, commercial space, a
hotel and conference center, an indoor water
park, marinas, parks and new green space,
among other amenities.
Hawthorn Woods also hosted the AJGA Junior-
Am event, which annually provides the AJGA
the opportunity to make contributions to local
junior golf charities and programs in the
hosting communities.
In addition, Bolingbrook Golf Club hosted the
Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt presented
by The Golf Channel, the world’s largest junior
golf skills competition, on July 29. Participants,
ages 7 to 14, were divided into four age divisions
and competed in three competitions: driving,
chipping and putting. The top three winners in
each age group, qualified for the regional
championship and had the opportunity to
advance to the national championships, held
last month.

 A Season of Giving Back...Courses Swing for Charities
Throughout the year, KemperSports facilities are involved in a multitude of philanthropic endeavors, ranging from charity golf outings
and dinner fundraisers to youth clinics and camps. Here’s a look at some of the charity events that took place this summer...

Memorial Foundation Join Forces at The Glen Club
Former Chicago Bears Jim McMahon and Steve McMichael and current Bears kicker
Robbie Gould are on the same team now. The three legendary Chicago athletes joined
forces with the Heroes of Freedom Memorial Foundation to host a benefit concert on
July 9 and celebrity golf tournament at The Glen Club on July 10. All of the proceeds
from the event went to the building of the first Fisher House in the Midwest.
A Fisher House is a “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care
at major military and Veteran Affairs (VA) medical centers. The Fisher House will be built
on the grounds of the Hines VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago.
“Not only is this the first Fisher House to be built in the Midwest, but this was the first
celebrity event for our organization. We are excited to be the recipient,” said James D.
Weiskopf, vice president of communications for the Fisher House Foundation, Inc.
Joining McMahon, McMichael and Gould were other current and former NFL stars,
former MLB, NBA and NFL standouts, and numerous entertainers. Active-duty,
wounded and retired members of the military also attended both events.

2006. More than $11,000 was raised to support 500 Special Olympics athletes in 23
sports including golf. Special Olympics N.J. conducts fundraising events year-round
to support programs for more than 13,500 athletes statewide. Heron Glen and
Special Olympics teamed up again this September for the second annual golf
outing fundraiser.

developed to introduce women who have never
played to the game of golf and to thank

KemperSports Participates in Nation’s Inaugural Patriot Golf Day

On Sept. 1, KemperSports facilities culminated a season of
events benefiting charity by participating in the nation’s
first Patriot Golf Day, a joint initiative of The PGA of
America and the United States Golf Association.
Some 3,000 golf facilities, including many of those
owned and operated by KemperSports from coast to coast,
committed to hosting this first-year program in which
golfers were asked to donate an additional $1 for each green
fee processed to Wounded Warriors, Inc., a non-profit
organization that benefits the Fallen Heroes Foundation to
support families of those who have become disabled or lost
their lives in the line of military duty.
“Patriot Golf Day represents an ideal opportunity for
KemperSports to work in step with golfers within the
communities in which we operate to support the dedicated
men and women of the United States Armed Forces and
their families,” said Steve Lesnik, chairman and CEO of
KemperSports. “We are honored to be a part of this
pioneering initiative.”
PGA Professional Dan Rooney, who is also an F-16 fighter
pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, spearheaded
the formation of Patriot Golf Day. Wounded Warriors
was founded by United States Marine Corps Colonel
John D. Folsom.

KemperSports to Operate
Championship Layout
Near Niagara Falls
Seneca Gaming Corporation, the development
arm of the Seneca Nation of Indians, has retained
KemperSports to plan, develop and operate a
championship golf course, which will be built on
251 acres in Lewiston, N.Y., just 20 minutes north
of Niagara Falls.
Upon completion in 2009, the Robert Trent Jones II,
LLC-designed track will mark the latest addition to a
growing lineup of amenities offered at Seneca Niagara
Casino & Hotel, including first-class gaming, a
luxurious 26-story hotel with spa, fine and casual
dining, live entertainment and shopping.
“We’re proud to bring our heritage and experience
to a new medium,” said Barry Snyder, chairman of
the Seneca Gaming Corporation. “This is truly a
partnership between passionate organizations who will
work together to bring this new championship-caliber
course to prominence in the golf world.”
“We look forward to working alongside Seneca Gaming
Corporation and Robert Trent Jones II design firm to
create a must-play destination in western New York,”
said KemperSports President and COO Steve Skinner.
“Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel is highly regarded as a
gaming destination, and we plan to broaden its reputation as a recreational
leader with the debut of this golf course.”
The 18-hole course, yet to be formally named, will provide Seneca Nation
members new employment opportunities as well as offer numerous
outreach programs to local youth.
KemperSports Oversees
Development of Second and
Third U.S.TopGolf Facilities
Golf Entertainment International (GEI) is breeding its TopGolf
revolution in the U.S. with the imminent debut of TopGolf Wood Dale
in Illinois and TopGolf Park Lane in Texas.
Construction of the soon-to-open TopGolf Wood Dale facility, located
at Wood Dale Park District’s Salt Creek Golf Course, began in
November 2006, while the TopGolf Park Lane project, located in Dallas,
started construction in January 2007. Both facilities are scheduled to
open this fall.

is a fun, point-scoring game
that is revolutionizing the sport
of golf and broadening its
appeal to a wider leisure
market. Using a high-tech
driving range, players hit
premium golf balls at targets
and score points based on

TopGolf Wood Dale and TopGolf Park Lane marks the second and third
TopGolf facilities based on U.S. soil. KemperSports Development, a
division led by Dan Cunningham and Kevin Miner, is overseeing the
development and construction management of the new complexes.

Genevieve Burke Added to
Corporate Ranks as Senior

marketing. Geni will oversee the

corps, working in step with the
management and staff that

and strategies at KemperSports’
golf properties as well as the
development and implementation
of the company’s corporate
marketing strategy.
Geni brings more than 16 years of
marketing experience in the
consumer packaged goods and retail industries. After receiving an
MBA from Northwestern’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management,
she launched her marketing career at Sara Lee Corporation. Following
seven years at Sara Lee, Geni served as vice president of marketing for
the online retail partner of Ace Hardware before her most recent
position as director of innovation marketing for Merisant Worldwide,
Inc., the global manufacturer and marketer of Equal brand sweetener
and a variety of consumer food products.
“Geni has a proven track record of marketing leadership, innovation
and success throughout her career,” said KemperSports President and
COO Steve Skinner. “She is a marketing professional with a passion for
golf and a wonderful addition to our management team.”
Kettler Renews KemperSports’
Contract at Goose Creek
Kettler, one of the largest land developers in the Washington, D.C.
metropolitan area and owner of Goose Creek Golf Club in historic Leesburg,
Va., has agreed to a long-term extension of KemperSports’ management
contract at Goose Creek, which began in 2003.
Designed by William F. Gordon in 1952, Goose Creek remains a favorite
among northern Virginian golfers. The semi-private, 18-hole club provides a
fun and challenging golf experience with multiple tee boxes and winding
fairways with strategically placed bunkers, ponds, creeks
and trees.
Adding to its allure, Goose Creek is home to a course-record 59, carded by
none other than golf icon Ben Hogan in the late 1950s.
General Manager Jeff Berg and the KemperSports team at Goose Creek are
currently steering a renovation project at the course, which is scheduled for
completion next spring.

“World’s Best Golf Resorts,” voted on by well-traveled and
discriminating readers. Bandon Dunes Golf Resort was honored
as No. 5 in the overall “U.S. Top 10” ranking. In addition, the
resort was named in the top three courses for the West and
Northwest regions, including No. 1 in “Best for Buddy Trips”
and No. 2 in both “Best Golf Resort” and “Best Golf Course.”

Golfweek has selected Desert Willow Golf Resort one of the
