Question 4
Read the email from Jessica to Yee Ying.

To:

yeeying@imail.com

Subject:

Congratulations

Hi Yee Ying,
Congratulations on being elected President of the school library board. I am
indeed very proud of you. This is good news! I am sure it is a well-deserved appointment.
I believe that you will make an excellent president in view of your personality as you have
the essential characteristics of a good leader.
Firstly, you are a very approachable and friendly person. You carry yourself well and
are outgoing. You are easy to talk to because you are a good listener. I have also seen how
you always make time to listen to someone in need.
Besides that, you perform your duties and responsibilities well in the school. You
dont act with fear or favour but in the interest of the school. As I know, personal glory
and gaining popularity have never been your aim in undertaking any task. You just set out
to do the task assigned to you.
Moreover, you are also active in co-curricular activities. As a netball team captain,
you have inspired your team to be the district champion for the first time. Even though
you played a significant role during the championship, you did not take all the credit. You
acknowledged that it was a team effort and gave credit to the others where it was due.
That is a true leader!
You have also shown that you are a good role model for other students. Many
students have looked to you for guidance and advice. You are always there to help them in
whatever way possible.
Lastly, you are open to the ideas and opinions of other librarians. You listen to others
and readily accept their views. Avoid being arrogant. No one likes a leader who is
too proud and other students may avoid you.
Congratulations once again! I have confidence that you will make an excellent
president of the Library Board. I am sure that you are able to carry out your task
responsibly and effectively.
Regards,
Jessica

Question 5
Read the poem below carefully. Then, answer questions (a) (d).

A Fighters Lines
I am old and worn
and have lost all my strength
sufferings
and the history of the fight for independence
have forced sacrifices
that know no name
or life
from the wheelchair of the rest of my days
I, body and energy crushed
see and cannot do much
these times are too big a challenge
for the remnants of my crippled years
the net of deceit spread everywhere
disturbs me.
In the name of justice
Wake up and form ranks sons of our ancestor
Be brave
And erect a wall of people
Stand up heirs of our freedom
I have no more voice
It is you now who should speak!
