2. Notes on safety and work

General

ATTENTION!

Always switch the MOBA-matic system into manual mode before you leave
the machine or when the machine is at a standstill.
Never perform work on the sensors as long as the system is in the automatic
mode.
If safety-relevant parts have to be dismantled for assembly of the system
components, they must definitely be installed again before initial commissioning.
Make sure that the screed is resting firmly on the ground before you perform
any work on the system.
Observe the safety notes of the machine manufacturer.

For welding

ATTENTION!
Never look unprotected into the arc.
IMPORTANT!

Before welding, disconnect at least the negative pole of the machine battery
and, dismantle, as far as possible, all electronic modules or interrupt their
power supply. Electric arc welding generates very high currents which may
destroy the machine electronics.
Position the negative pole of the welding machine in the direct vicinity of the
location where welding is to take place.
Remove any paint from the intended attachment point and the bracket to be
welded on. Prime and paint the weld after work.
Protect inflammable parts from flying sparks.

-5-

For assembly
IMPORTANT! When assembling the Big-Ski, it is imperative to ensure that neither the towing arm nor the screed structure are impaired in their freedom of
movement by the attachments!
In other words, manoeuvrability must be guaranteed in the entire working area.

3. General information on the assembly instructions

These assembly instructions only describe the mechanical set-up incl. the assembly
of all elements. They were written as a supplement to the MOBA-matic operating
manual. Commissioning as well as working with the Big-Ski are therefore not part of
these assembly instructions.
You will find all the information which goes beyond the assembly of the Big-Ski mechanics in the operating manual.

4. Scope of delivery
The scope of delivery may differ depending on the length of the modular Big-Ski ordered. However, it always comprises all the mechanical system components as well
as the screws required for attachment for the respective expansion version.
The electric components and the appropriate cables are not included in the scope of
delivery.

6. Mechanics
In creating the Big-Ski system the design of the mechanics assumed crucial importance.
The support for the sensors was to be designed to be very stable owing to the sometimes considerable length and screwed tight to the tool support. It is also advantageous to produce the structure in several sections in order to facilitate transport
and assembly. These aspects were taken into account, resulting in a design which
can be assembled and dismantled in a quick and uncomplicated manner.
In terms of design, the long beam was divided into small parts which can be modularly adapted to each other, i.e. different lengths can be achieved depending on the
combination of the attachments.
For example, with the combination 1 middle bracket and 2 module elements, a Ski
total length of max. approx. 9.20 m can be achieved together with the sensor
booms.
With the combination 1 middle bracket and 4 module elements a Ski total length of
max. approx. 13.50 m can be achieved together with the sensor booms.
The following describes the assembly of the long version as the shorter version is
achieved simply by leaving out two module elements.
Furthermore, it has proved practical if the alignment of the individual sensors can be
moved over the reference using the special sensor booms at the front and rear (in
practice Sonic-Ski is quite frequently positioned in front of and behind the machine
in order to ensure reliable scanning of the reference in curves).

X1

X2

The distances between the sensors are ideally the same (X1 = X2).
The middle sensor is attached at the usual single sensor position and so, when required, work can be performed with only one sensor simply by turning the switch on
the MOBA-matic (e.g. at the start of paving, road junctions etc.)
The mechanics can be mounted, depending on the application, at the side of the
screed or else above the screed. This depends on the paving width required in each
case.
The procedure for assembling the Big-Ski is identical in both cases.

-9-

6.1 Attachment of the mechanics

The following describes how and in what sequence the individual parts of the modular Big-Ski are assembled.

To ensure that the Big-Ski can be operated as parallel as possible to the subsoil during paving, it has to be attached in line with the subsequent paving conditions.
For this purpose, the screed should be deposited according to the desired layer
thickness and the towing point set accordingly.

-10-

6.1.1 Assembly "Towing arm support"

IMPORTANT! During assembly of the two towing arm supports, care must be
taken to ensure that they do not impair the freedom of movement of the towing arm or the screed structure! That means that manoeuvrability must be
guaranteed over the entire working area.
The entire Big-Ski structure is mounted on the side of the towing arm.
For this purpose the two towing arm supports must first be mounted.
The design of the towing arm supports sometimes differs depending on the paver
used.
During assembly it is possible to screw the brackets directly into the existing bores
or, as illustrated below, to attach them using mounting plates on the towing arm.
Alternatively, the two brackets could also be welded on directly.

The front support is mounted just behind the towing point.

Align the support vertically.

The rear support is mounted at roughly

the height of the auger.
Align the support vertically.

-11-

At this point, once again the reminder

that the mounted parts must not hinder
the towing arm in any position or even
block it.

6.1.2 Assembly of the "swing arms"

Before the swing arms can be mounted on the two towing arm supports, the two
clamp collars must first be mounted.

Push the clamp collars onto the towing

arm supports with the 45 chamfer facing upwards and secure using the M10
star knob screw.

Then push the two swing arms onto the

towing arm supports.
The rear swing arm is turned through
180, as illustrated, and mounted on
the towing arm support.

-12-

6.1.3 Assembly of the "middle bracket"

The first central element of the entire Big-Ski beam is the middle bracket.
It is already provided with 2 pre-mounted sliding pieces which are pushed over the
two round locating pins of the swing arms.

However, first push a clamp collar (flat

design) onto the front swing arm and
secure with the M10 star knob screw.

The bracket is now mounted.

Take care during assembly to ensure
that the round nose is pointing upwards for inserting the subsequent
modules.
First push the rear sliding piece from
below onto the rear swing arm.
Then raise the middle bracket together
with the rear swing arm until the front
sliding piece can be pushed from above onto the front swing arm.

-13-

Then secure the rear sliding piece with

a clamp collar and an M10 star knob
screw.

After the first part of the beam has been assembled, it is then aligned:

The middle bracket is now aligned horizontally using the clamp collars on the
swing arms and, if necessary, also with the clamp collars on the towing arm attachments.

Then the middle bracket is aligned parallel to the paver by turning the swing
arms.

Finally, secure all the attachment screws.

-14-

6.1.4 Assembly of the "module elements"

To assemble the other module elements, simply insert the elements with
the hook.

Secure each inserted module part, after

insertion, with a locking screw M10 x
70.

Now up to 4 module elements can be

attached in the same way.

-15-

6.1.5 Assembly of the "sensor brackets"

After assembly of the module elements the actual beam structure is completed.
This is now followed by the attachment of the sensor brackets into which the SonicSki sensors can be inserted.
As already mentioned at the beginning, the middle sensor should be positioned exactly at the point on the beam where it would also work in normal operations (approx. at auger level).
The two other outer sensors should be mounted at an equal distance from it.
Firstly, 3 sliding brackets are pushed
onto the beam structure for mounting
the sensor brackets.
(1x on the middle section, and 1 each
on the two outer module parts)
The sensor brackets are pushed from
below into these sliding parts and secured with the two M10 star knob
screws.

In addition, all sensor brackets are secured with a clamp collar.

-16-

"Extendable sensor brackets" are mounted on the two outer positions whereas one
normal sensor bracket is positioned in the middle.

A so-called "sensor boom" is then inserted from the outside into the two
outer "extendable sensor brackets".

All parts are to be secured after assembly using the M10 star knob screws.

If there is not enough space to push in the sensor brackets from below, then
simply raise the screed slightly using the transport cylinders. After assembly
of the sensor brackets, it is imperative to firmly deposit the screed again to
avert the risk of accidents.

- 17 -

The mechanical set-up is completed with the assembly of the sensor booms.

Example: 9.30 m Ski length

Example: 13.50 m Ski length

- 18 -

7. The electric components

7.1 Installation of the electric components
Only CAN Sonic-Ski sensors an be used on the Big-Ski.
(can be seen from the bayonet connector instead of the normal screw connector).
The electric components of the Big-Ski system are:
-

3 CAN-Sonic-Ski sensors,

1 junction box,

1 MOBA-matic,

as well as the relevant connection cables for them.

The 3 sensors are always positioned as follows in the system:

1 (front)

2 (middle)

3 (rear)

To ensure that this is always the same on both sides, care must be taken during assembly of the junction box to ensure that the side input connector for connecting the
MOBA-matic is always pointing in the direction of travel (forwards).
Only in this way can it be guaranteed that the sensor messages displayed by the
MOBA-matic actually coincide with the sensor position.

- 19 -

7.1.1 Assembly of the Big-Ski junction box

The junction box should be installed in such away that simple wiring to the controller
and the sensors is possible. The connections for the sensors should always point
upwards so that no water can penetrate the junction box. Inputs which are not
needed are to be sealed with protective dust caps. The input connector always
points in the direction of travel, as already described above.
1st step:
The junction box is firstly to be installed
on the mounting plate using the M6 x
12 hex. socket screws.
2nd step:
Then the mounting plate is installed on
one of the two middle sliding brackets
using the M8 star knob screws.

During assembly of the Big-Ski, pay attention to the right-hand machine side:
In order to satisfy the requirement that the input connector is always pointing
in the direction of travel, the sliding bracket on which the junction box is to be
mounted must be pushed onto the Big-Ski from the inside to the outside.

- 20 -

7.1.2 Assembly of the Sonic-Ski sensors

The Big-Ski always scans the subsoil as a reference. That means the sensors must
always be aligned in the direction of travel.

Installation of the Sonic-Ski in the middle position.

The sensor can also be mounted on the

swivelling sensor boom on the two outer sensor brackets.
It is therefore possible to swivel the two
outer sensors for different requirements, e.g. travelling in bends during
paving.

If one sensor boom is swung to the side, care must be taken to ensure that
the sensor mounted is subsequently
aligned again in the direction of travel.

The sensors are secured using M8 star knob screws.

For this purpose 2 star knob screws are provided for each sensor.
- 21 -

7.1.3 Installation of the MOBA-matic

The MOBA-matic is pushed into the

holder provided for this purpose.

With the installation of the electric components, assembly is completed.

This is now followed by cabling and subsequent commissioning. You will find the
necessary steps for this in the appropriate operating manual.

1. General information
This operating instruction is not an instruction for the complete system.
It was created as a supplement to the operating instructions of the MOBA-matic
version 3.26.
So a system instruction for the Big-Ski consists of the operating instructions of the
MOBA-matic version 3.26 and this supplement.

-4-

2. The Big-Ski
2.1 Description
For the Big-Ski, the principle of averaging as known from the Sonic-Ski sensor
is adapted. For this purpose three Sonic-Ski sensors (CAN version!) are distributed
all over the machine length - or even projecting above it using the appropriate
mechanical aids.
In some exceptional cases, averaging can also be done with only two sensors
(Sonic-Ski at the front and the back side).
Due to this, even extensive unevenness or waves in the longitudinal direction of
the ground can be levelled out.

2.2 Function mode

After all smaller inaccuracies and obstacles have been neutralized by the averaging
process of each Sonic-Ski sensor, the Big-Ski construction now also reduces waves
and smaller, oblong differences in altitude in the longitudinal profile of the ground.
However, larger deviations remain excluded from the averaging if the control
window is set appropriately.

2.3 Mounting instructions

2.3.1 Mechanic
The mechanical system is of essential importance when realizing the Big-Ski
system.
However, since this system is individually designed by the supplier or the customer,
we can only describe a standard mounting procedure.
Due to its extraordinary length, the sensor bracket should be solidly built and
screwed tightly to the tool bracket.
It is recommendable to subdivide the system into several components in order to
facilitate transport and mounting.
Furthermore, it has proved useful to U-bend the components at the joints (see
drawing). By doing so, the alignment of the sensors above the reference is
considerably facilitated (quite often, Sonic-Skis are positioned in front of or behind
the machine, so that a reliable sensing of the reference is secured even in curves).

BIG-SKI JUNCTION-BOX
Connection of the Big-Ski to the digital controller must be done by a special
Big-Ski junction box with appropriately coded connector plugs.
Y-CABLE
The y-cable serves as an adapter between 10pole connector (incl. CAN lines at
digital controller) and 7pole connector (CAN-connection to junction box or SonicSki).
SONIC-SKI-SENSOR (CAN)
The system can be operate with 1 up to 3 Sonic-Ski sensors. For the system only
Sonic-Ski with CAN-interface are usable. To prevent confusions between the SonicSki with PWM-interface and the Sonic-Ski CAN, both types have been fitted with
different attachment plugs. Thats the reason why a specific connecting cable is
needed for the CAN-Ski.
COIL-CABLE (for CAN-connection)
Generally applies: A 7pin connection with bayonet fixing always represents a CANconnection. The needed length (6m or 12m extended length) depends on the
mounting position of each Sonic-Ski-sensor.

-7-

2.3.3 Installation of the electrical components

The junction box should be mounted in a way that a simple wiring to the controller
and the sensors is possible. The connectors for the sensors should always point
downwards, so that no water can seep into the junction box. All inputs that are not
used, have to be sealed with dust protection caps.
Connect the digital controller via the y-cable to the input of the junction box. After
that, connect the desired sensor combination to the outputs of the junction box as
described below. The front sensor (as seen from direction of travel) is connected to
output 1, the middle one to output 2 and the one at the back to output 3.
This order is the basis for the numerical indication on the controller display
during sensor identification.
Please only use CAN Sonic-Ski sensors at all positions.

2.4 Set-up
With the Big-Ski, only ground sensing is possible.
(if more than one Ski is connected to the junction box)
Therefore, all Sonic-Skis have to work longitudinally to the direction
of travel in order to obtain optimal results.

When working with the Big-Ski, the optimal working range of the
Sonic-Ski has to be considered as well.
Each of the Sonic-Ski sensors used has to be positioned in a
distance of 30 cm to 40 cm to the reference.

2.5 Working with the Big-Ski

It is assumed that the Big-Ski and the digital controller are mounted, that all cables are
connected and the digital controller has its voltage supply. After the switch-on message,
the digital controller indicates the sensor identification. As soon as the message
disappears, the system will be operable. If the Big-Ski is being used for the first time or the
sensor combination has been changed, the sensor identification has to be acknowledged
by pressing any one of the push buttons.

2.5.1 The operator menu

If a junction box and at least 3 sensors are connected to the MOBA-matic controller the
operator menu, with the parameters "Sensitivity" and "Control window", is enlarged by the
parameter "Sensing mode".
This additional parameter enables, with several sensors connected to the junction
box, to switch over between single evaluation and averaging.

2.5.2 Controlling with the Big-Ski

At the beginning of a new job it is advisable to start the controlling in single evaluation; i.e.
to sense the reference at the conventional position with just the sensor which is connected
to input 2 of the junction box.
This will help to position the screed on its working level, because at the beginning of a job
most time the rear sensor can not detect the reference and would supply useless
measured values. When the screed has reached working level after a few meters of paving
the system is switched over to averaging.
Procedure: Controlling with the Big-Ski
