1 Precaution
LaVision

accept no liability for improper use of the PARTICLE BLASTER

100 (PB100). The PB100 is only intended for tracer particle generation to
display air ows for PIV measurement. Handling combustible gases can be
dangerous. The PB100 should be used within a properly ventilated area. The
PB100 should be used only with solid particles and not with liquids.
The LaVision PB100 is designed to generate an air ow seeded with solid tracer
particles. LaVision may supply Aerosil, Titanium-Oxide and Glass Hollow
Spheres particles. The PB100 should be operated with air or oxygen.

2.1 Introduction
The application of the Particle Blaster 100 (PB100) system can be used to
produce an uniformly seeded air ow in combustion applications and is suitable for dierent powders.
Applications:
Powder Seeding for Particle Image Velocimetry
Powder Seeding for Laser Doppler Interferometry
Flow visualization
High temperature Combustion studies
High pressure ow applications (up to 2 bar)
Seeding in Hostile Environments

2.2 Components of the PB100

The PB100 consists of a cylinder with a magnetic stirrer, an internal plate
with nozzles, a pipe with its xing bolt (inlet), an outlet connection, a blow
up valve and cover plate. The inlet, outlet and overpressure outlet connections
are SWAGELOK anges with a diameter of 6 mm (see g. 2.2).
Inside the seeder is a plate with six 1 mm nozzles. This plate is applicable
for ow rates up to 400 liter/h. The PB100 incorporates a magnetic stirrer.
The magnetic stir bar inside the housing actuates the particles. The system is
available with a power supply of 100-120 V and 220-240 V. Please take a look
on your magnetic stirrer housing for the correct power supply connection.

2.3 How to ll the PB100

Filling the PB100 and connecting the air supply is illustrated in the g. 2.2.

Figure 2.1: Front and rear panel of magnetic stirrer. Using the
MOT rotary knob you may adjust the speed for the magnetic
stirrer. The required voltage to operate the magnetic stirrer is
specied on the rear panel.

Figure 2.2: Inlet for air supply and particle outlet.

2.4 Adjustments and how to use the PB100

A exible gas tube may be connected to the gas inlet pipe (SWAGELOK ange
coupling). The air charged with particles exits through the SWAGELOK ange
coupling (outlet). Three optional plugs are included to x your inlet and outlet
tubes and also the outlet from the blow up valve with a diameter of 6 mm to
the PB100.

Caution:

In case you operate the PB100 with gases or if you want to avoid
that the lab is contaminated with particles in case the safety valve will blow
up please connect also a exible gas tube to the outlet of the safety valve and
redirect blown out gas to a suitable destination outside the laboratory. The
blow up valve is triggered by a pressure of 2 bar.

Note:

Once the safety valve has been removed from the cover plate the warranty claim for the PB100 is void.
To ll the PB100 with particles the air supply should be stopped and particles
poured into the cylinder. The housing can be opened by removing the six
screws (M6) on top. To assemble the PB100 is the reverse operation. The
cover and the housing are sealed by an O-ring. The groove for the O-ring
should be cleaned before reassembly to avoid gas or air leakages.
The lling level is maximum 3 cm above the base of the cylinder. You can ll
in nearly a volume of 230 cm3 . The PB100 should be used with solid particles
only and not with liquids. LaVision oers several solid particles, e.g. Aerosil,
Titanium oxide and Glass Hollow Spheres. Please contact LaVision for details.

2.4 Adjustments and how to use the PB100

With the rotary potentiometer in front of the magnetic stirrer you can adjust
the speed of the magnetic stir bar. If you use particles that tend to agglomerate
you should use a higher speed for the magnetic stir bar.
Depending on ow rate and speed of the magnetic stir bar the level of the
particles in the housing will fall and it will be necessary to adjust the height
of the plate. This can be done by stopping the air supply and switching o
the magnetic stirrer and loosening the holding screw, adjusting the height of
the plate and then tightening again when the plate is at the desired height.
LaVision can not provide an universally valid adjustment procedure to drive
the magnetic stirrer and to adjust the height of the plate to regulate the particle
component in your ow. The optimum rotation speed for the stirrer depends on
used particles, lling level and ow rate, this needs to be adjusted empirically.
9

2 Particle Blaster 100

If the rotation of the magnetic stir bar is blocked in the housing it is an

indication for to many particles in the cylinder. Try again with less particles.

3 Customer Service
If you have a technical problem or questions regarding hardware or software
which is not adequately addressed in the documentation please contact your
local representative or LaVision service directly.
In order to speed up your request please include following information:
The order number of your system (see section 3.1).
The number of the used dongle (see section 3.1).
A short description of the problem.
Your customer settings le (see section 3.2).
A log.txt if you have a reproducible software problem (see section 3.3).
An information on the used operating system and service pack.
You can contact service at LaVision GmbH by:
email: service@lavision.de
phone +49 551 9004 229
Alternatively you may submit your problem using the service request interface
on the LaVision homepage under the URL www.lavision.com.

3.1 Order and Dongle Number

To be able to nd information on the delivered hardware components and
customer details in the database your order number is required. This number
can be found in the DaVis/Help/About menu or on the original DaVis
installation CD (see Fig. 3.1).
In the About DaVis dialog you nd the order number in the 3rd line. The
ve digits behind the leading X are the order number followed by the DaVis
version and the release date.
The dongle number is required to exclude license problems. This number is
is written on the hardware key. The number of the used dongle can also be
found using the DaVis/Help/About menu and on the DaVis CD.
Please include the order number and the dongle number in your service requests.

3.2 Customer Settings

To be able to reproduce your problem it could be essential to know the exact
hardware setup and software parameter in DaVis . All currently used parameter
can be extracted using the DaVis/Help/Create service le for LaVision
Support menu.

After you have selected this the system will write back all values for the relevant
variables to an lsf-le. This procedure will take a while indicated by a Busy
dialog. The lsf-le will also contain the current settings of the hardware setup,
acquisition setup and batch processing operation lists.

The lsf-le will be written automatically to a davis/service
subdirectory. The
name contains the order number and dongle number that is extracted from your
software (#ordernumber/donglenumber.lsf). Send this lsf-le as attachment
to the description of you problem by email to service@lavision.de.

3.3 Log.txt

3.3 Log.txt
If you have a reproducible software problem in DaVis please generate a log-le.
This le contains all functions you have called and all error messages that have
been displayed after you have activated the log. Please proceed as follows:
Start

DaVis and use the Macro/Clear Log le menu.

Enable the Log each CL function call (slow) entry in the Macro
menu. This feature is active if you see a ag left next to the entry. Every
time you click on this entry its status is changed.

Try to reproduce your problem, e.g. until an error message is displayed.
