Dear Colleague:

Northeastern Pennsylvania will celebrate National Philanthropy Day Friday, November 21, 2008 at a special luncheon
at the Tribeca Center. This special day, designated each year by an official Act of Congress, recognizes the importance
of philanthropy in society and pays tribute to outstanding volunteers, professionals, corporations and foundations.

We need your help to identifying those in the Northeastern Pennsylvania area who best exemplify the spirit of
philanthropy. The Awards Selection Committee invites you to join in the recognition of philanthropy in the following
ways:
• Nominate candidates for one or more of the five distinguished awards to be presented at the
Philanthropy Day Luncheon.
The award categories are:
Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser
Outstanding Corporation
Outstanding Foundation
Outstanding Philanthropist
Outstanding Fund Raising Executive

• Mark Friday, November 21, 2008 on your calendar today and plan to attend the Philanthropy Day
Luncheon at the Tribeca Center in Pittston, PA.

• Complete your nomination forms immediately. The deadline is June 20.

The Pocono Northeast Chapter of AFP is committed to making the awards process as inclusive as possible, recognizing
outstanding achievements on the part of organizations of all sizes and stature. In this spirit, we encourage
nominations on behalf of individuals and institutions whose accomplishments demonstrate excellence in philanthropy
not solely in monetary terms, but in their level of commitment, their talent and creativity, and their impact on our
region.

Greater Pocono Northeast Chapter
2008 Philanthropy Day Awards

• Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser - This individual must have demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in
coordinating and motivating groups of volunteers in one or more major fund raising project(s). The recipient
should demonstrate a commitment to charitable fund raising projects and a commitment to the advancement of
philanthropy.

• Outstanding Corporation - This award celebrates a good corporate citizen that demonstrates outstanding
commitment to the community through financial support and through encouragement and motivation of others to
take leadership roles toward philanthropy and volunteer involvement.

• Outstanding Foundation - This private foundation must demonstrate outstanding commitment through financial
support and encouragement and motivation of others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and community
involvement.

• Outstanding Philanthropist - This award is presented to an individual or family with a proven record of
exceptional generosity; who, through direct financial support, has demonstrated outstanding civic and charitable
responsibility; and by their example has encourage others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and
community involvement.

• Outstanding Fund Raising Executive - The outstanding fund raising executive is an AFP member who has a strong
record of achievement and has practiced his or her profession in an exemplary manner as evidenced by the
Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice.
Nominations are encouraged on behalf of those who work in small organizations and/or one-person shops, as well
as those in larger institutions.

• Lifetime Achievement - The Lifetime Achievement Award honors those individuals who best exemplify the spirit
of philanthropy through contributions of their time and talent on behalf of worthy causes. Not presented on an
annual basis, this award is reserved to acknowledge individuals whose lives and accomplishments demonstrate a
truly extraordinary commitment to philanthropic work in the community.

Please include a nominating letter (no more than 2 pages). As these awards are very competitive be as specific as
possible. Appendices, of up to six additional pages, may include: letters of support, program background, press clips,
etc. that you feel will be helpful to the committee to gain a better sense of his/her accomplishments.

Please take the following into considerations when preparing your nomination:

Outstanding Volunteer Fund Raiser


1. Evidence of quality of leadership and organizational ability in fund raising campaigns.
2. Description of the extent of time and effort contributed to the cause.
3. Specific campaign goals and results.
4. Evidence of success in recruiting and motivating others.
5. Description of participation and support of other non-profit organizations.

Outstanding Corporation Award


1. Evidence of specific financial contribution/support to the community and, if applicable, programs beyond the
community.
2. Description of direct achievements, such as new programs launched through the organization’s efforts.
3. Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and
community involvement.

Outstanding Foundation Award


1. Evidence of outstanding commitment through financial support of community projects and charitable concerns.
2. Description of direct achievements, such as new programs launched through the support of the foundation.
3. Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and
community involvement

Outstanding Philanthropist Award


1. Evidence of direct contribution/support to nominee’s organization/community.
2. Description of specific achievements, such as new programs launched through his or her efforts.
3. Evidence of encouragement and motivation given to others to take leadership roles toward philanthropy and
community involvement, participation in conference programs, publications, etc.
4. Description of participation in and support of other non-profit organizations.

Outstanding Fund Raising Executive Award


1. Brief description of the individuals career experience
2. Evidence of quality of leadership that is persuasive, effective, creative and stimulating and evidence that the
individual gives his or her best as a team player.
3. Specific examples of the individual’s commitment to volunteerism, continuing professional development and
evidence of participation and collaboration with other non-profit organizations.
4. Recognized organizational ability in fund raising campaigns.
NOTE: To be successful in this category the recipient should have a minimum of ten years of professional experience.

Lifetime Achievement Award


1. Not bestowed on an annual basis, this award recognizes a lifetime of extraordinary commitment to philanthropic
endeavors.
2. The Award honors those individuals who best exemplify the spirit and essence of philanthropy.
