Between the World and Me

by TA-NEHISI COATES
Winner of the National Book Award in Nonfiction
Winner of the ALA Alex Award

n a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions

about American history and ideals to the most intimate
concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a
powerful new framework for understanding our nations history
and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of
race, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on
the bodies of black women and menbodies exploited through
slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up,
and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a
black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all
honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves
from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi
Coatess attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his
adolescent son.
Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined
history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the
World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts
our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

Just Mercy

A Story of Justice and Redemption

by BRYAN STEVENSON
A Top Common Reading Selection at Colleges/
Universities
Winner of the Carnegie Medal for Nonfiction

ryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded

the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to
defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the
wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in
the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of
his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man
who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted
he didnt commit. The case drew Stevenson into a tangle of
conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanshipand
transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.
Just Mercy is at once an unforgettable account of an
idealistic, gifted young lawyers coming of age, a moving
window into the lives of those he has defended, and an inspiring
argument for compassion in the pursuit of true justice.
Every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird, and in some ways more so . . . a
searing indictment of American criminal justice and a stirring testament
to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.

legally with his family. But when his familys visas lapsed,
his mother chose to stay without papers, and they faced
tremendous obstacles, eventually joining the ranks of the citys

Adam and Thomas

by AHARON APPELFELD
Translated by JEFFREY GREEN
Illustrated by PHILIPPE DUMAS

Finalist for the National Jewish Book Award

dam and Thomas is the story of two nine-year-old Jewish

boys who survive World War II by banding together in the
forest. They are alone, visited only furtively, every few days by
Mina, a mercurial girl who herself has found refuge from the
war by living with a peasant family. She makes secret journeys
and brings the boys parcels of food at her own risk.
Adam and Thomas must learn to survive and do. They forage
and build a small tree house, although its more like a birds
nest. Adams family dog, Miro, manages to find his way to him,
to the joy of both boys. Echoes of the war are felt in the forest,
and the boys meet fugitives fleeing for their lives and try to
help them. They learn to disappear in moments of danger.
They barely survive winters harshest weather, but when things

Roller Girl

by VICTORIA JAMIESON
A Newbery Honor Book

or most of her twelve years, Astrid has done everything

with her best friend Nicole. But after Astrid falls in love
with roller derby and signs up for derby camp, Nicole decides
to go to dance camp instead. And so begins the most
difficult summer of Astrids life as she struggles to keep
up with the older girls at camp, hang on to the friend
she feels slipping away, and cautiously embark on a new
friendship. As the end of summer nears and her first roller
derby bout (and junior high!) draws closer, Astrid realizes
that maybe she is strong enough to handle the bout, a lost
friendship, and middle school . . . in short, strong enough
to be a roller girl.
In her graphic novel debut, real-life derby girl Victoria
Jamieson has created an inspiring coming-of-age story
about friendship, perseverance, and girl power.

Swabys exuberant portrayals make this

a compulsively readable title. There is
no good reason why every single woman
here is not a household name, and now,
thankfully, Swaby is helping rectify
historys oversight.
