BLESSED ADVENTUROUS MOTHERS.

Source: The Gospel according to Spiritism, VIII: 1-4.

SIMPLICITY AND PURENESS OF HEART

1. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God (Matthew, 5: 8).

2. And they brought young children to Him, that He should touch them: and His disciples rebuked those that
brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was much displeased, and said unto them, suffer the little children to come
unto me, and forbid them not: for such is the Kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the
Kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And He took them up in his arms, put his
Hands upon them, and blessed them (Mark, 10:13-16).

3. Pureness of heart is inseparable from simplicity and humility. It excludes all ideas of selfishness and pride.
This was why Jesus took infancy as the symbol of purity and humility. It might appear unjust to make this comparison
seeing that the Spirit of a child could be very old, and on being reborn to corporeal life might bring with it the
imperfections which it had not been able to cast off during previous incarnations. Only a Spirit who has reached
perfection can offer an example of true purity. However, from the point of view of our present life it offers an exact
comparison because a child, having had no opportunity as yet to manifest any perverse tendencies, presents us with an
image of innocence and purity. So it becomes clear that Jesus did not say the Kingdom of Heaven was meant for
children, but for those who resemble them.

4. Since the Spirit of a child has lived before, why does it not show itself as it really is right from birth?
Everything in God's work is full of wisdom. A child needs special care which only a mother's tenderness can bestow,
tenderness which stems from the frailty and ingenuousness of the child. For a mother, her child is always an angel and
this is the way it must be in order to captivate concern. She would not be able to offer the same solicitude if, in place o
ingenuousness, she saw virility and adult ideas in the infantile features, nor if she came to know the past of that
incarnate Spirit.
From the time of birth ideas gradually take on shape and impulse according to the development of the organs,
from which it is possible to say that during the first years the Spirit is truly a child, because all ideas which form the true
character remain dormant. During this period of dormancy, in which the instincts are also latent, the Spirit is more
malleable, more accessible to impressions which can modify the character and which helps the Spirit progress. All of
which makes it easier for the parents to educate the child at this stage.
The Spirit then wears a temporary tunic of innocence and so Jesus was right when, not withstanding the
anteriority of the soul, He takes a child as the symbol of purity and simplicity.

CONSIDERATIONS:

Study given By A. M Fernandes at “Centro Espírita Joana d’Arc’ on 04/ 05/ 2010.

1
It says in St.Matthew that Jesus after speeches left Galilee and he went to the boundaries of Judea, besides
Jordan; it was there in these places far away that the mothers brought their children for Jesus to bless them, let us see
that the disciples were still backslidden in regard to Jesus' mission and they impeded with rough words that that should
happen, it is therefore very eccentric that behavior and that there were assistants to Jesus on that time, from those who
were less expected, could it be that we still have them nowadays who would impede us from coming to Jesus or God
except of the way that they allow us, understand or leave us to.
Fortunately Jesus saw what was happening and called them to attention for their forbidding,
Well then, the mothers of those provinces brought their children to be blessed by Jesus, their initiatives and
their faith were not taken from them, because Jesus when seeing what happened said: 'Suffer little children to come
unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God, and he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.”. 2
How many and how many of us do not owe to our mothers our happiness, our morality, our spirituality, our
accomplishment; how many and how many mother's examples there is throughout the world, beginning with Jesus'
mother who accompanied his mission as from a child, we know about that although there are few references, but we
have the ones of when Jesus adolescent of twelve years old in the Temple teaching the Doctors of the Law 3 and of
when he was an adult I believe his mother wove him a tunic to be worn by him. 4
All mothers help their children according to their spiritual progress, cultural condition and social preparation.
Examples are not lacking to us, we have united families that are and stay united due to the effort and care of
the mothers who do not give up loving us and to hold us united in their maternal maintenance.
There are mothers who are a secure port, where their children come to take refuge of the storms of life, there
are mothers who are good counselors where it never lacks them a good council or advice, an explanation, a sense of
safety, a reason for living. An incentive to continue in the everyday life, because it usually is so, of course there are the
defective and inadequate mothers; however in reality they can only donate what they have, however, at least they
always have affection for their children, and it is that which makes the difference.
There are mothers, who influence their children in the good, trying directing their vocations and encouraging
them in their walk of life,
There are mothers who accompany the career and life of their children of ways and manners well wished by
all, as praiseworthy examples which thereabout there are without difficulty of us to find them thanks to God from us be
given!.
There are exceptionally and unhappily demanding mothers, preconceituous, selfish, bossy and dominant, that
they be happily for our goodness exceptionally, because they are mothers still in a struggle state with their imperfections
and they can only offer very little to their children...
The way out for mothers or not it is the improvement according to Jesus' saying: “Be Perfect." 5
There is who says:' Nobody is perfect', as an excuse for their mistakes, of their delict, offenses, of their
irresponsibility’s and unconsciously they are shown proud of their imperfections and they do not easily humble
themselves to admit their mistakes and saying with honesty:' I am sorry I have erred', showing like this to have dignity
and to receive the understanding and tolerance of their close one.
We are Spirits in evolution, carrying with us our progress 6 little or much acquired in the present or in previous
incarnations with some successes or failures, with beautiful things acquired as well as with shameful things due to the
imperfections still awaiting to be corrected.
He who has more imperfections is obviously much unhappier than the one that has less imperfections 7 and
fights to be happy, undoing the upsetting which might embarrass or cause harm to oneself.
It is up to each one his own effort to get better and to change oneself for the good, because happiness has to
be gained by us, in agreement of being a feeling which cannot be bought.
Evil or ignorance 8 are roads which the imperfect spirit has to cross to arrive to the relative perfection to the
plans of God; for that faith and hope in a better blessed future are of priceless value; not the eternal condemnation, and
not the negative of saying: “Nothing can be done, I am like so, it was so that God has made me", please nothing of that,

we are the authors of ourselves, we grow, we develop and we progress on our own step, because God created us:'
Simple and ignorant',9 and He placed us in a proportional atmosphere met to our need.
Yes, we are in a 'World of Tests and Atonements’, which is the School to the height of our needs be them
moral or intellectual; a Father doesn't place a son to be alphabetized in a University where his son would feel as a fish
out of water. With God it is not different, logic indicates us that it is according to our spiritual degree, in relation to there
being 'primitive Worlds, Worlds of ‘Tests and Atonements’,10 Regenerating ones and the visible or invisible Celestial
Worlds' etc...
Yes, being us living in a World of imperfections one should not be demanding if our mothers are imperfect,
because they also struggle to get better, let us not blame or censure them, but we ought to help them as the same way
that they try to help us, let us not despise them for their being ignorant or uncultured, because God has deposited us in
their hands, there were certainly spiritual likeness originating from other lives or unexpected common interests in the
carnal eyes, but mother is mother and that’s that (that’s all).
Therefore, Oh mother, are you imperfect seek out improvement, oh son, are you imperfect, improve yourself!
The whole society develops and has progress together, for that reason good experiences are passed on
ahead, and the bad ones allowed to be forgotten, the evils are combated together and the good accepted by all,
The Laws of ‘Cause and Effect’ 11 are neutral, nobody is punished, but corrected, and nobody is privileged,
but beneficiated.
A mother who gives herself out is not forgotten not by the Laws of God, nor by God Himself, the mothers from
the boundaries of Judea made the best they were able for their children bringing them to Jesus to be blessed, they
persisted against the disciples' prejudice who did not let them to approach to Jesus, it is inexplicable that attitude to
have come from the disciples, that is the truth, we need to walk a lot of time with Jesus in a learning of how to reform
ourselves and to gain love and tolerance to the neighbor and let us notice that the disciples already walked with Jesus
for some time, let us not be surprised that we also need to walk with Jesus as close as possible, because we are still
back warded in our spiritual journey and the times are nearly coming. 12
The moral life and the spiritual are the most important, because we are Spirits, not denying, however, the
bread of the carnal body that we owe to the child which God makes us responsible, so much to the mother's
commitment as to the father.
In the old, old days man was educated for the working world and the social, and women stayed at home to be
domestic mothers and to give children to the world, thence the difficulties and those mothers' sufferings in the
uncultured majority without any formation and unable to help their children with quality it was certainly pitiful.
I believe that the world of then days with machismo dominance was wrong, because the humanity's base
begins at home with the mothers. So that the educated mothers and cultured pass their qualities to the children and the
children enrich the world as a consequence of their mothers to have given them a good preparation, and it is in this
sense if well accepted that the future will be. It will not be a loss for a mother being educated in universities to leave that
world to be mother, because she will have condition although it doesn't seem to prepare children for a better world and
that mother won't be forgotten nor for their children nor for God that has her like a missionary of that better future and
she will have her reward, even now already in this world as seeing their happy children and accomplished, since their
accomplishments will be shared and felt by her.
Nevertheless, of the morals, of the intelligence, of the culture and of love! If she fails in her mission it is
because the world did not prepare her in this or in the last lives, therefore she does not have the fault being considered
that in her instinct she would do everything or will do for the children.
There are sons or daughters that say: 'I didn't ask to be born', they are in ingratitude because they don't know
that they are very needy Spirits as we all of progressing spiritually as spiritism indicates us which is:' to Be born, to die,
to be reborn again to progress continually, that is the law', in the French original it is: (Naitre, movrir renaitre encore et
progresser sans cesse telle est la loi).
Yes, it is a repetitive demand until we be ready for the happy Heavens of the Universe; however there is who
wants Heaven already here with everything that is material with comfort of the whole kind demanding it in whatever way
without having merit to the unfortunately point of stealing and killing for that, forgetting that Jesus a Superior Spirit 13 did
not come to be served, but to serve, 14 they don't know that God of the present, past and future of all of us knows better

and He sees all His children's future and He advises: “Do not steal, do not kill",15 independent of that concern of God it is
more and more difficult to have people to listen the pieces of advice coming from God, pieces of advice although to us
inspired they are of divine essence to guide us, therefore God knows that He created the laws of ‘Cause and Effects',
whose laws demand balance in His Creation, and he who offends those beneficial laws to the whole creation has to
readjust oneself, to correct oneself and to respect them, because whatsoever one sows that also one will reap, if one
sows love to the neighbor one will receive a return of relative love to the reciprocal Law: “Give and it shall be given unto
you’… For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again’ 16
Loving or honoring does well to the spirit and love affects the carnal body, because the one who loves is in
harmony with the material world, however he who disrespects consumes himself and his corporal life is weakened,
decreased and wastes away, not for punishment, but for natural law, on that there was and still there is the promise"
Honor thy father and thy mother so that you may have a long life" 17
It is because love is special oil which burns without consuming the lamp that is the body. 18
We close the study with the very honest desire that God may bless us and that our lamp may always have oil,
and if possible plentifully.
God be with us, as formerly, today and always.

PROLEGOMENA
PHENOMENA which are inexplicable by any known laws are
occurring all over the world, and revealing the action of a free and
intelligent will as their cause. Reason tells us that an intelligent effect must
have an intelligent force for its cause; and facts have proved that this force
is able to enter into communication with men by the employment of
material signs.
This force, interrogated as to its nature, has declared itself to belong
to the world of spiritual beings who have thrown off the corporeal envelope
of men. It is thus that the existence of spirits has been revealed to us.
Communication between the spirit world and the corporeal world is
in the nature of things, and has in it nothing supernatural. Traces of its
existence are to be found among all nations and in every age; they are
now becoming general and evident to all. Spirits assure us that the time
appointed by Providence for a universal manifestation of their existence
has now come; and that their mission, as the ministers of God and the
instruments of His will, is to inaugurate, through the instructions they are
charged to convey to us, a new era of regeneration for the human race.
This book is a compilation of their teachings. It has been written by
the order and under the dictation of spirits of high degree, for the purpose
of establishing the bases of a rational philosophy, free from the influence

of prejudices and of preconceived opinions. It contains nothing that is not
the expression of their thought; nothing that has not been submitted to
their approbation. The method('(l adopted in the arrangement of its
contents, the comments upon these, and the form given to certain portions
of the work, are all that has been contributed by him to whom the duty of
publishing it has been entrusted.
Many of the spirits who have taken part in the accomplishment of
this task declare themselves to have been persons whom we know to have
lived at different epochs upon the earth, preaching and practicing virtue
and wisdom Of the names of others history has preserved no trace; but
their elevation is attested by the purity of their doctrine and their
Union with those who bear venerated names.
We transcribe the words in which, by writing, through the
intermediary of various mediums, the mission of preparing this book was
confided to the writer:
-"Be zealous and persevering in the work you have undertaken in
conjunction with us, for this work is ours. In the book you are to write, we
shall lay the foundations of the new edifice which is destined to unite all
men in a common sentiment of love and charity; but, before making it
public, we shall go thorough it with you, so as to ensure its accuracy.
"We shall be with you whenever you ask for our presence, and shall
aid you in all your labors; for the preparation of this book is only a part of
the mission which has been confided to you, and of which you have
already been informed by one of us.
"Of the teachings given to you, some are to be kept to yourself for
the present; we shall tell you when the time for publishing them has come.
Meanwhile make them the subject of your meditations, that you may be
ready to treat of them at the proper moment.
"Put at the beginning of the book the vine-branch we have drawn¹
for that purpose, because it is the emblem of the work of the Creator. In it
are united all the material elements that most fitly symbolise body and
spirit: the stem represents the body; the juice, the spirit; the fruit, the
union of body and spirit. Man's labour calls forth the latent qualities of the
juice; the labour of the body develops, through the knowledge thus
acquired, the latent powers of the soul. (…)

Progression of Spirits 20

114. Are spirits good or bad by nature, or are they the same spirits
made better through their own efforts?
"The same spirits made better through their own efforts. In growing
better they pass from a lower to a higher order."
115. Are some spirits created good and others created bad?
"God has created all spirits in a state of simplicity and ignorance;
that is to say, without knowledge. He has given to each of them a mission,
with a view to enlighten them and to make them gradually arrive at
perfection through the knowledge of the truth, and thus to bring them
nearer and nearer to Himself. This perfection is, for them, the condition of
eternal and unalloyed happiness. Spirits acquire knowledge by passing
through the trials imposed on them by God. Some of them accept these
trials with sub-mission, and arrive more quickly at the aim of their destiny
others undergo them with murmuring, and thus remain, through their own
fault, at a distance from the perfection and the felicity promised to them."
- According to this statement, it would appear that spirits, a' their
origin, are like children, ignorant and without experience, but acquiring,
little by little, the knowledge which they lack, by passing through the
different phases of human life?
"Yes; the comparison is correct. The child, if rebellious, remains
ignorant and faulty; he profits more or less according to his docility. But
the life of man has a term; whereas that of spirits stretches out into
infinity."
