QUESTION 3(b)
INVESTIGATION IN MATHEMATICS
Year : 5
Learning outcome : calculating the area of composite-two dimensional shape
(triangle)
Question 1:
1 cm
1 cm

DIAGRAM 1
Calculate the area of triangle in Diagram 1
1. Understand the problem
Area of a small box is 1 cm
There are 8 boxes for the base
There are 6 boxes for the height

2. Device the plan

Using the formula of the area of triangle

3. Carry out the plan

Height, h = 1cm x 1cm x 8
= 8 cm
Base, b = 1cm x 1cm x 6
= 6 cm
Area of triangle = x height, h x base,b
= x 8 cm x 6 cm
= 24 cm

4. Check the answer

Area of triangle = x height, h x base,b
24 cm

= x 8 cm x base, b?

24 cm

= 4 cm

Base, b = 24 cm / 4 cm
= 6 cm
OR

24 cm

= x height, h? x 6 cm

24 cm

= 3 cm

Height, h = 24 cm / 3 cm
= 8 cm

Year : 5
Learning outcome : Solve problems involving volume of composite 3-D shapes.
Question 2:
The area of the base of a cuboidal glass container is 720 cm. The height of the
container is 24 cm. of the container is filled by the water. Calculate the volume of
water in the container in cm.
1. Understand the problem
The area of the base of the container = 720 cm
The height of the container = 24 cm
is filled by water
Find the volume of the water in cm

2. Device the plan

Use the diagram
Use the formula of volume of the cuboid

3. Carry out the plan

720 cm
24 cm
720 cm

water
The height,h of filled water = x 24 cm
= 6 cm
Volume of cuboid

= Area of base, cm x height, cm

= 720 cm x 6 cm
= 4 320 cm

4. Check the answer

The height,h of filled water = 4 320 cm / 720 cm

= 6 cm

QUESTION 3(c)

Learning outcome : Solve simple problem involving money in reallife situations.
Question 1 :
Siti buys a glass of orange juice and two pieces of cakes at her school canteen every
day. If the juice is RM 1.30 and a piece of cake is RM 0.80, how much does she
spend to buy the drink and the cakes for five days?
1. Understand the problem
Price of the orange juice : RM 1.30
Price of a piece of cake : RM 0.80
Siti buys 2 pieces of cakes every day
Total of money she spends for 5 days

2. Device the plan

Use a table

RM 2.90

Price of orange juice and two pieces of cakes per day = RM 2.90
Price for 5 days = RM 2.90 x 5
= RM 14.50

4. Check the answer

Use the inverse method : Multiplication
Price per day = RM 14.50 / 5
= RM 2.90
Price per piece of cake = RM 1.60 / 2
= RM 0.80
