LABORATORY OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY

PROGRAM
Laboratory with all its equipments and chemicals is a place which has the
potential to cause hazard to its users if the laboratory workers are not equipped with
occupational health and safety knowledge. Philosophically, occupational health and
safety is a consideration and efforts to guarantee the wholeness and perfection of both
physical and spiritual. With occupational health and safety, it is expected that users can
perform their work safely and comfortably. A work is considered safe when potential
risks can be avoided in everything performed by the workers.
Occupational health and safety is one of the aspects in labor protection by
applying control technology of all aspects which have the potential to cause hazard to the
workers. Control is also aimed to sources which have the potential to cause diseases or
illness as result of the respective type of work, prevention of accident, and harmonization
between work equipments / machines / instruments and characteristic of both the human
performing the respective work and the people around him/her. By applying the control
technology of occupational health and safety, it is expected that the labors will achieve a
high level of physical endurance, working power, and health. In addition, it is expected
that occupational health and safety can create a high level of occupational comfort and
safety.
The development of science through various researches and trials in the
laboratory has been so rapid. This rapid development of science is beneficial for human
life. However, such rapid development would also tend to increase the potential hazard in
industry. If the principle of balance and harmony is upheld by scientists and
entrepreneurs, undoubtedly those concerns can be minimized. The increased ability to
create equipments with new technology must be offset by the creation of more
sophisticated control devices and growing capabilities of manpower. Some things to note
in the face of hazard that may arise as a result of the development of science and
technology, among others, are regarding the size of the equipments, control devices,
capabilities and skills of workers, disaster prevention tools, and the monitoring
performed.

1. BACKGROUND
Laboratory safety is part of laboratory management as a whole. Laboratory
performs various actions and activities, especially related to analytical material both from
human and non-human. Laboratorys personnel, who are always in contact with
analytical material, have the potential to be infected by pathogenic bacteria. The potential
of infection may also occur from one personnel to the other or to the family and
community. To minimize the hazard, it is necessary to have a strict policy. All personnel
must understand laboratory safety and its classification have the attitude and abilities to
perform security related to their works according to the SOP, and to properly control
analytical materials according to the good laboratory practice.
2. GENERAL OBJECTIVES AND SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE
General objectives: to create occupational safety culture in the laboratory, to protect
laboratory workers from hazardous materials, and laboratory safety.
Specific objective: to protect laboratory workers from infectious materials and chemicals
which is health damaging by wearing personal protective equipment.

7. RECORDING AND REPORTING

Activities report contains invitation documents, minutes of meeting/socialization,
photos of activities, and list of attendance.
Reporting is conducted by preparing activities report which contains activities
notes and it is reported once a year. The reports is addressed the Head of Clinical
Pathology and Microbiology Unit and hospitals OHS department. Evaluation is
conducted by analyzing all activities in the respective program and assessing the
achievements and issues found, and proposing solutions.
