packets must pass through a router that connects LAN to a wide area network and hence to outside the world. Let us look at
eh traffic from LAN to a WAN and hence outside world. Let us look at the traffic from LAN through the router. Packets
arrive with a mean arrival rate of 5 per second. the average packet length is 144 octets and it is assumed that packet length is
exponentially distributted Line Speed from the router to the WAN is 9600bps. The following question where asked:
i) What is the mean residence time for the router?
ii) How many packets are in the router, including those waiting for transmission and the one currently being transmitted for
the 90th Percentile? II
iii) How many packets are in the router, including those waiting for transmission and the one currently being transmitted for
the 95th percentile?

average time for the server to respond the query is 0.6 seconds, and the standard deviation is estimated to equal the mean. At
peak times, the query rate over the LAN reaches 20 queries per minute. we would like to answer the following question:

ii) If a 1.5 second response time is considered the maximum accetable, what percent growth in message load can occur
before the maximum is reached? II
iii) If 20% more utilization is experienced, will response time increase by more or less than 20%?
