KKS

for
Beginners

What Is KKS ?
Kraftwerk Kennzeichen System (KKS)
(Pronounced : Kraftwerk Kenziken System)
Is the identification system used for power stations, as applicable to
Fossil Power Stations andis not to be confused with similar
numbering systems such as WKS or SKS.

The KKS is a code used to clearly identify systems and

components in power plants according to Process Functions, Points
of Installation and Structures.Eskom has adopted it for all
powerstations including nuclear and we will have to ensure we
comply.

Why Use KKS ?

You want a label on the plant that give you a unique number and description of the item you are looking at
for identification purposes.
The KKS number give you the physical location of a specific item
The cost of that item can be tracked.
Codes can be linked to each other for parts interchangebility.
You can have an accurate asset register of everything on your plant.
All functions like reliability centered maintenance , finances , operations etc can be linked to one item .
To Identify Safety Critical Items.

What would happen if there is no codification system :

Peter tells his maintenance crew to go and replace an isolating valve on unit 1 on the fire protection system
on level 20. here is the delema there are 100 isolating valves for that system on that floor level , how do
you know witch one to remove ? Bear in mind that there can be up to 1 million Maintenance and Safety
Critical Items on a Power Station.

Peter call the valve a Isolating Valve but Paul name it Diaphragm Valve and Andrew name the same
valve a Shut Off Valve , They are all correct but you do not know if this valve is electrically opperated or
if there is any other valves that you need to isolate before you take this one out or even if it is the correct
one that you are removing.
These are just a few of the reasons why Plant Codification was started.

How does KKS work ?

Imagine a townhouse complex called Town House City

Town house city have 6 houses in the complex.

Within Each House there is furniture .
Each piece of furniture have spare parts , and cost you
money to maintain.

You want to know what the furniture is worth ,

the location of each piece and what is the
maintenance cost to each piece .

Now for a house this might not be difficult !

But what if you have nearly 1000 000 pieces of furniture ?

Lets say Townhouse City is has a overall structure code 0 0 because the code describe the whole
complex and 10 is Town House 1 and 60 for Town House no 6
and each house is broken up into 3 categories :
# for Structure code
+ for Electrical Appliances
= for (Process) Furniture
The complete complex is # 0 0
This include all houses , roads and utilities

House no 1 # 1 0

House no 3 # 3 0

House no 2 # 2 0

House no 5 # 5 0

House no 4 # 4 0

House no 6 # 6 0

Town House no 1 is sub divided into 3 categories and consist of the following

+ For Electrical Appliances

# For Structure

= For (Process) Furniture

We give a 2 digit area

code for each room inside
house no 1

House No 1
Area Breakdown
House no 1 Structure

# 1 0HOS
House no 1 have 2 rooms

# 1 0HOS02

We give a 2 letter abbreviation

to each piece of equipment
and a 3 digit number for
counting from item 1 to 100

# 1 0HOS
House no 1 have 2 rooms

#1 0HOS Room No 1
Consist of

#1 0HOS Room No 2
Consist of :

We Allocate a

Powerstations also have houses called Units usually only 6 but some have up to 10 Units.
The Powerstation is broken up into 3 areas:
= Process Related Codes (Mechanical Equipment )
+ Point of Installation Codes (Electrical Equipment )
# Structure Codes (Buildings)
The codes for Units

: 10 for unit 1 up to 60 for unit 6.
