 Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) – created to ARPAnet – predecessor


to the Internet (1969).
 January 1, 1983 – the ARPAnet becomes The Internet.
 March 1989 - Sir Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web.
 1995 US government releases Internet for commercial use.
 Web 2.0 (2003) – the term Web 2.0 is popularised by John Battelle and Tim
O’Reilly.
 Semantic Web - coined by Sir Tim Berners-Lee (2006).
 Web 3.0 - Web 3.0 is a phrase coined by John Markoff of the New York Times in
2006, which refers to a supposed third generation of Internet-based services that
collectively comprise what might be called 'the intelligent Web.
 Technological Determinism - The introduction of new media technologies have
significantly changed the ways in which audience consume and interactive with media
texts. Coined by Thorstein Veblen.
 Technology Push/Demand Pull – Daniel Chandler, 2001.
 The medium is the message is a phrase coined by Marshall McLuhan (1964).
