SCIENCE IN TAMIL LITERATURE
INTRODUCTION
When we gaze at the stars, we are indeed gazing at the past for even the closest
star, excepting our Sun, of course, is it self a few light years away. Very similar it is with
literatures, literatures are the treasure chest of history of a civilization, everything
belonging to it is embedded in its literatures. Though anyone can look up at a night sky
and watch the stars, only a few can identify them, similarly again, anyone who reads a
literature will not be gifted with the information it holds, it requires a great deal to open
those treasure chests. This difficulty in interpretation is twofold - most of the literature
did not record the past for the sake of recording it it appears as a mere poetic
mentioning of contemporary events and things. Secondly, the knowledge chain is cut
somewhere in the middle, things are not continuously handed down to generations; this
break in most cases is mainly due to various military and cultural invasions.
Thus it becomes extremely difficult to solidly establish anything from these
classical literatures. I have, in this article, only attempted to indicate what could have
been what and wish to trigger some serious consideration of the possibilities of our
ancient past.
Though the above title serves to be simple and helps lure the readers attention, it
should be stated here that it is not very exact for this particular piece of article, for both
science and Tamil literature are very vast in their scope and meaning. I will be
confining myself to just one book of the ancient Tamil literature, Purannu, and to just
one branch of Science, Physics (Cosmology and Astrophysics to be a little more exact!)
Let us begin with a brief introduction to this book.
PURANNRU
Purananuru is a collection of four hundred (nanuru 400) poems all falling under
the puram (lit. external) classification of Tamil traditional grammar. These songs are
sung by various poets who lived in a very wide spectrum of time and status. Though
Purananuru and other literatures of the Sangam era are approximately dated between 2nd
century B.C. to 2nd century A.D., there are strong indications for certain songs being
much older than this (remarkably, song 9 which makes a reference to river Pahruli a
river supposed to have existed in the Lemuria continent, circa 10,000 B.C.)
It is thus important to keep this dating in mind while discussing the scientific
knowledge of these people as evident from their literature, for things as simple as a
screwi or a pair of scissorsii becomes fascinating when we learn they existed as early as
2000 years ago!
ASTROPHYSICS
It is interesting to know what was known 2000 years ago of things outside this
Earth. To start with, they are very well knowledgeable of all the surrounding planets and
constellations. This may not come as a surprise for we have other literatures far earlier
than these which deal extensively on the subject. Yet these poets of the Sangam age are
very naturally quoting the relative positions of heavenly bodies and sometimes are also
drawing astrological conclusions from them.
In song 229 the poet Kudalur Kizhar notes thus,
Panguni uyar azhuvathu
thalai naalmeen nilai thiriya
nilai naalmeen athan ethir erthara
tholnaalmeen thurai padiya...
Lines 5 8
-and anticipates the demise of the then king Cheraman Yanaikat Cey Mantharal
Irumporai, which follows shortly. Now this may sound like astrology, however it also
includes some serious traits of astronomy. The references to various stars (Panguni uyar
Azhuvam-Middle of Panguni Month, Thalai Naalmeen Raising Star (Uthiram), Nilai
Naalmeen Stable Star (Moolam) and Thol Naalmeen Falling Star (Mirugaseersham))
should be analyzed.
It is interesting to note that these poets were well aware of the differences between stars
and planets, the very words Naalmeen and Kolmeen for star and planet respectively
are based on the fundamental difference between them that the former emits its own
light (Naaluthal - to radiate) and the later receives the light of the former (Kol to
receive).
Few references to the planet Mercury are found, Mercury rise being used to indicate the
beginning of dawn,
Velli thonra...
Poet Kovur Kizhar, in song 386 talks about various possibilities for the path of the planet
Mercury and concludes saying that he will not be afraid in any case for he is under the
rule of the mighty Chozan Killivalavan,
Kunathisai ninru kudamudal selinum
2
In the light of questioning the possibility of learning about vacuum space 2000 years
before, we could possibly force ourselves to believe that they had airborne vehicles, as
indicated by this song,
...visumbin
Valavan evaa vaana oorthi
Eythuba enba...
In which the poet Uraiyoor Muthukannan Saathanaar refers to the legendary Pushpaka
Vimanaa that would come to bring the virtuous souls to heaven as Valavan evaa vaana
oorthi, the airborne vehicle that is not run by a pilot (valavan driver/ pilot). This
explicit mentioning of being pilot-less allows us to wonder about the possibilities of
piloted air vehicles (vaana oorthi / vimanaa).
In another song, the same Saathanaar talks about people who are well knowledgeable in
the trajectories of Sun and other planets of the solar system,
Sennyayitru selavum
an nyayitru parippum
parippuc choozhntha mandilamum
vali thirutharu thisaiyum
varithu nilaiya kaayamum enru ivai
senru alanthu arinthor...
Song 30, Lines 1 6
Here the use of senru alanthu indeed leave us wondering, whether this phrase means
that they learned all these trajectories by actually going there and measuring. Let us leave
the how? for now! It should be noted that here again sky (space) is referred to with its
unique property, varithu nilaiya kaayam which means the sky which stands without
any support (kaayam aakaayam, sky)
One other thing worth noting is Sennyayitru selavum which means the movement of
the Sun, the movement of the Sun mentioned here is not the one as apparent from the
earth, but with reference to the galaxy itself this fact is evident from the third line in
which the poet refers to the Solar system as mandilam he is very clearly talking about
the Suns revolution with all its planets along with it.
Such mentioning of the moving Sun (with reference to the galaxy) is also found in ThiruMurugaatruppadai, one of the Ten Idylls (Pathuppaattu)iv. Many deep understanding of
outer space are exhibited by many other poets, notable among them are Saint
Manickavasagarv and Thirumangai Alwarvi.
Let me conclude this article by quoting what could be a possible mentioning of ozone
layer and its function, from this song by Thaamappal Kannanaar,

EDUCATION SYSTEM
Year after year many new minds are created. New technologies are developed and
invented.People started thinking wisely. This is all because of a system that we call
EDUCATION.People get used to this system and gain knowledge. These are just afew
people. On the other hand, there are others like me, who take in information from one
ear and leave it in the other ear. There are still others who are unable to afford this or
are not intrested to avail this golden oppurtunity. They start earning at a young
age, where they see other children of the same age going to school.Anyway nothing is
going to be a big difference.Nowadays, there are lots of people who after finishing
their engineering, simply sit and sleep at home.
Students study only to get marks and not to gain knowledge. These days,no one
understands the concept behind the content.Their only aim is to not fail in the
exams.Students are ranked according to the marks they obtain in the exam. Supposing
a person gets 100/100,he/she is considered as a topper and intelligent and if he/she
gets 10/100, they areconsidered a failure and dump. But logically this system cannot be
accepted. We cant judge a student by a single word called exam.
For example in school life, if a person is interested in physics, he/she will show
excellence only in physics. We cant force themto study biology and expect
greatresults.Basically what the society thinksabout any educational establishment such
as aschool or college is that first bench students are toppers and the last bench students
are slow learners. We cant judge a student by his seating location in the
class.Whiletalking about the back benchers, I get reminded of one of the famous
backbenchers. A drop out from school in 8thgrade and now the owner of Microsoft;
its none other than Mr.Bill Gates. And his friend, who was a first bencher at school,is
a manager in that very company. But this doesnt imply that every backbencher can be
an owner of a MNC.
An educated person isntsaid to have gained knowledge, unless they know how to
apply the studied concept in real time. There are a few education boards, where even
the questions in exams appear as they are in the textbook.Students are not made to
think and apply what they have learned. This is simply our EDUCATION SYSTEM.
10
Students should be taught how to analyze the subject, and should be motivated
towards doing innovative projects. New innovations are yetto be discovered. Our
education system is not satisfactory and some changes should be made to improve this
system. Its all in the hands, heart and brains of young minds. So young minds, do
awake to create an other young mind.

DAWN
She starts as an orb
Inside nights womb
Hiding shyly behind the night prowler
She is but a shadow behind the hounds precious
She nests as a warm glow on the cheeks of the night owl
She slowly makes her way through the twinkling maze of the expanse
She now greets the kings of the night like an old friend
She bears a witness to the crickets chirps
She soothes the tiny green swords
She is a faithful audience for the birds tunes
She softly tickles the early riser
She admires herself in the flowing mirror
She now reveals herself
As bright as an innocent smile
As gentle as a mothers healing hands
As warm as a satisfieds bed
As colourful as a blinds imagination
She spreads her wings for the worlds to see
She is dawn
The reassurance of a brave new world
The nectar of the flower called hope
The storehouse of yesterday tomorrow
And tomorrows yesterday
The birthplace of dreams
And tears of joy
The graveyard of fear and the unknown
11
She is dawn
She is as swift as thoughts
As slow as agony
As fierce as justice
As just as time
As pure as white
She is dawn
The eternal blazing fire
The timekeeper

Following the introduction was the first event of the evening, The Simpsons Quiz.
The avid audience was divided into 4 groups with 10 participants each. The quiz
was based on pop culture references in Simpsons. The objective was to guess the
movie to which the scenes belonged. Participants earned 10 points for each right
answer. S.R Vetrivel, the Vice President of Atrium was the Quiz Master.
Contact was the subsequent event steered by Susheel, the PRO of Atrium. The
groups were maintained. One against many was the theme of this event. The
defender was asked to pick a chit which beheld a word. The task of the defender
was to safeguard this word from revelation as long as possible, while the attackers
endeavored to unveil it by making successful contacts with their teammates. Firstly,
the defender revealed the first letter of the word. The attackers then gave out clues
for words beginning with that letter, such that only the other fellow attackers could
129
guess what word was being referenced. A CONTACT was established as soon as
the attackers intuitively knew the word attributed to the clues given. The defender
was privileged with two guesses. A correct guess demolished the contact, while two
wrong guesses would result in the defender giving out another letter of the chosen
word.
The third and final event was Four Fourths of a Ghost. A single group was formed.
The objective of this event was to avoid the formation of a word. A random
participant announced a letter of choice. The game then proceeded in a clockwise
manner, with the very next person giving out another letter, (following the previous
letter) with a word in his/her mind. As the turn passed on, a word was formed. The
one to finish the word was eliminated.
Around 50 people were in attendance for the first meet. All the three events were
met with enthusiastic reception from the audience and the meet was a success.

DEBATING UNION
There's no bigger gift than the gift of knowledge and there's no better way to gain
knowledge than from a good debate. That is what we at REC-DU have been striving
towards, gaining knowledge and sharing ideas all through a single medium called
debating.
The Debating Union or the DU in short, was born out of sheer passion to talk. It consists of
members from all years and departments clubbing in their ideas and debating it out
against each other as teams. The DU has regular meets in college, familiarising the
members with all the formats of debating, the British parliamentary style, the Asian style
and the model United Nations format. Each format has its own rules and regulations and
pose a different challenge. The members of the DU are exposed to the current events in
the world, public speaking and a lot of knowledge, be it political, economical or social.
The DU is also very active in participating in different tournaments, it also encourages its
newbies to represent the DU in tournaments as the DU believes there's nothing better
than learning through experience. 4 teams from the REC DU participated in the Anna
university parliamentary debate and two of the 4 teams broke into the semi finals, the
teams of Susheel-Abinayaa and Ram Aravind-Syed. Adjudicators Kaushik and Vetri broke
into the finals as the adjudicators. The DU also represented REC at the M.S Ramaiah
memorial parliamentary debate in Bangalore, 4 teams of 2 speakers and an adjudicator.
Vetri broke in as the adjudicator and the teams of Syed-Badri and Susheel-Abinayaa were
ranked among the top 30 teams that participated in the tournament.
Hariprasath of the REC DU also represented the DU at the SSN MUN as the delegate of
Bangladesh in the UNHRC and performed exceptionally well.
The team of Badri-Syed along with Jayesh and Ashwin participated in the NALSAR inter
varsity debating championship hosted by NALSAR at Hyderabad and was ranked among
the top 40 teams that participated. Jayesh also chaired in one of the rounds at NALSAR.
The team of Susheel-Abinayaa participated and won the guild of service memorial debate
and Abinayaa was given the best speaker award. They also participated in the ELIHU-Yale
debate where Abinayaa was judged the best speaker of the tournament.
Members of the DU also represented the college at the Stella Maris college parliamentary
debate 2015, 3 teams and 2 adjudicators participated where Aishwarya broke in as the
adjudicator. 2 teams from the DU also participated at the Ethiraj debate which was a
freestyle debate.
Thus, the DU has widespread participation in a number of tournaments across various
formats thereby becoming prominent in the local and national circuit. The members of the
DU are also picking up on the nuances of debating through experience and competition.

ENACTUS
The best way to predict the future is to create it. Enactus is a global non profit
entrepreneurial organization. At Enactus REC, we search for the pioneering minds that
pace up the novice craft and turn them up into successful entrepreneurs. Its not about
ideas; its about making ideas happen. Evoked in the year 2006, to bring about a positive
change in the society and to bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and students, this elite
club is surely a rostrum to try the odds out. With an aggregate of dynamism and passion
from the comrades, weve successfully created and implemented several community
empowerment projects. Few of the ongoing projects are as listed below.
PROJECTS
PARISUTHAM
Cleanliness is the scourge of art. The key to activate cleaner environment is by using
potent goods for cleaning. Here, the victims of the 2004 tsunami extant in Ennore and the
slum dwellers at St. Thomas Mount prepare this eco-friendly and fine quality phenyl. This
helps them to manufacture phenyl and market it to the nearby shops and sustain them in
the longer run.
DHANIYAM
Food is the most important part in a human beings life. And here in Enactus REC, the
opportunity is given to many unemployed ladies in Ramapuram. You dont need a silver
fork to eat good food; you just need a golden heart to serve them. With decisive
speculations and cleaner hearts, our manufacturers are acing at their own livelihood. Our
main motto was to make self-employment and eradicate unemployment. This has been
thrivingly portrayed and our heads are going up, seeing the unemployment ratio going
down! We make ragi ladoos, murukku, market it and this has become awfully lucrative.
AVANTIK
A good soil is recognized by the amount of good manure invested. Agriculture is striving
in todays scenario which is the backbone of Indian Economy. When there is no proper
manure, theres no proper farmland and as a result theres food perishing. And so, our
squad started up with a survey in the villages that are in critical need of manure and we set
up organic bins and prepared manure, which has been a bonus for the farmers.
133
EVENTS
FLOOD RELIEF
Children Watch, is a similar nonprofit, independent organization started with a noble
aspiration of promoting social and economic progress among the tribal communities of
Kancheepuram district in Tamil Nadu. Currently, they are working for the upliftment of a
local tribal community called the Irula tribes. It strives to create awareness about the rights
amongst these tribal people and also guides them along the path towards a better
lifestyle.
The recent floods in Tamil Nadu that caused large scale destruction to both life and
property did not spare these small communities either. Whatever little personal
belongings they had, was washed away. They were left in need of basic necessities like
food, clothes, and blankets among other things. This is where Enactus REC stepped in. We
paid a visit to this organization, supplied sufficient relief materials to these families and
also conducted a survey in order to identify the day to day difficulties and challenges that
are faced by these people in an attempt to do what little we can do to help them. Even
though the mishap was lethal, as a team we were able to scale down the aftermaths.

27th March15: E-Conclave15. Entrepreneurship is a continuous process to be accelerated,
enhanced through motivation at certain stages. At this point, institutions like us involving
in the tasks of promoting the entrepreneurial pursuits of the students, needs platforms to
channelize the spirit and functioning.
Such programs were envisaged to provide a thrust for higher order thinking on
entrepreneurship after it and to make entrepreneurship education meaningful to the
society at large. This conclave is one such platform for focusing on various aspects of
student entrepreneurship. The conclave is intended to provide a better level of
understanding entrepreneurship and availing opportunities for start-ups and incubation of
ideas.
The E-Conclave is a distinct annual happening and is meant to showcase the prowess of
the institutions commitment and to open the windows of the world to the students. The
primary goals of the E-Conclave are to bring about an awareness among the students on

the CHENNAI FLOODS, one of the most devastating situations Chennai has ever faced.
Rotaractors from RCREC involved and helped the needed through the medical camps in
collaboration with AOL(ART OF LIVING). It was again time to roll up our sleeves and save
a life. Yes, RCREC organized the BLOOD DONATION CAMP by joining hands with Indian
Bank and CFSR of REC. Around 400 enthusiastic souls turned up for this good deed and
310 units were collected. It was a day of much satisfaction for the members of the club in
serving for a good act at no cost.
