Brief introduction of organizationMSETCL

Company profile:
Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company limited, a wholly owned
corporate entity under the Maharashtra Government, was incorporated under the
Companies Act, in June, 2005 after restructuring the erstwhile Maharashtra State
Electricity Board to transmit electricity from its point of Generation to its point of
Distribution.
It owns and operates most of Maharashtra's Electric Power Transmission
System. MSETCL operates a transmission network of 39871 Circuit KM of
transmission lines and 559 EHV Substations with 89178 MVA transformation
capacity. This infrastructure constitutes most of the inter regional as well as intra
regional electric power transmission system in the State. Today, MSETCL is the
largest state transmission utility in the country.
The company also has the distinction of being the only power utility in the
state sector to own HVDC lines. The Company operates a 752 km long H 1500
MW, 500 KV bi polar HVDC line from Chandrapur to Padghe. This has been

Page 4

Industrial Lecture
marked as a major success as electric power is generated in east Maharashtra, due
to easy availability of coal, whereas the bulk use of power is in the western part of
Maharashtra in and around cities such as Mumbai, Pune and Nashik. The power
losses are very low in the HVDC line. As a result, the power received at Padghe is
practically the same as what is injected at Chandrapur.
The load dispatch center is the nerve centre for the operation, monitoring and
control of the power system. The SLDC Kalwa near Mumbai is fully
computerized and has ultra-modern facilities. Mahatransco also has a Load
Dispatch center at Ambazari near Nagpur. To keep up with the increase in Power
generation in the next 5 years, Mahatransco also has planned to establish a robust
transmission network. It is implementing an ambitious expansion plan over the
period 2011-12 to 2015-16, to meet the evacuation and grid strengthening needs
of the future. The adoption of predictive maintenance practices has helped the
company to reduce interruptions and improve the network's availability to
99.70%.
It has installed ABT metering at 530 Sub-stations for energy accounting
purposes and implementation of FBSM. The ERP system is fully integrated and
being put into use, where functions of key departments are on line. To set up a
comprehensive communication network by utilizing existing infrastructure, an
Optic Fibre communication system of about 2801 km is being installed. It has also
experimented with unmanned remotely controlled substations at two locations and
GIS substations at Bhandup and Hinjewadi. To raise funds from the market for
equity capital/ capex schemes and to reduce its interest burden, MSETCL is
readying itself for the launch of an IPO. It has undertaken an ambitious task of
establishment of a 765 KV substation at Aurangabad. The State Load Dispatch
Centre (SLDC) at Kalwa and Ambazari are being renovated and modernized with
140 Nos. of SCADA - RTU.
The Company has adopted the National Training Policy and has established
Training Centres at 7 different locations which are attached to respective Zonal
offices. These centres impart training on Technical, Safety and Soft skills which
are guided and monitored by the HR/Training Department. It has recently
established a Technical Training Centre - the Power System Learning Centre - at
S.S.B.T.S College of Engineering and Technology, Bambhori, Jalgaon

Brief report:
What is Personality?

The personality is the typical pattern of thinking, feeling, and

behaviours that make a person unique.

Everyone wants to be attractive to others. To that end, having a

good personality is vital - probably even more so than good looks.

In fact, approximately 85 percent of your success and happiness

will be a result of how well you interact with others.

Ultimately, it is your personality that determines whether people

are attracted to, or shy away from you.

Skills for Personality Development:

Be a better listener. Being a good listener can help you to see the
world through the eyes of others. It enriches your understanding
and expands your capacity for empathy.

Read more and expand your interests. The more you read and
cultivate new interests, the more interesting you are to others.
When you meet new people it gives you the opportunity to share
what you know and to exchange your views with them.

Be a good conversationalist. This relates to how much you read

and know. Once you have much to contribute, learn how to talk
about it with others.

Be yourself. The next most tiresome thing after having no opinions

is trying to be something you're not. Moulding yourself in order to
fit in, or be accepted, usually backfires.

Have an Opinion. There is nothing more tiresome than trying to

talk to someone who has no opinion on anything. A conversation
has nowhere to go if you have nothing to expound on.

Five Vitamins of Personality Development:

Vitamin A Approach

Vitamin B Behaviour

Vitamin C Communication & Concentration

S.S.B.T.S College of Engineering and Technology, Bambhori, Jalgaon

Page 9

Industrial Lecture

Vitamin D Determination

Vitamin E - Effective

Conclusion:
Individual differences in personality are universal in that they are
found in all human populations. The roots of individual differences are no
doubt bedded in evolutionary history, selected because of their improved
adaptiveness to conditions in the environment. The specific personality
qualities of an individual, which lead to individual differences between people,
are not based so much in evolution, however, but are the product of many
developmental factors.

Brief report:
Switchgear:

Switch is use for making or breaking the circuit. If this switch is

provided with some gears then it is called as switchgear.
Example; Circuit breaker, MCCB, Isolator

MCCB :

It can break the circuit when there is fault.

Difference between isolator and breaker:

Isolator can operate manually and breaker cannot operate manually.

As shown in figure one circuit breaker is on primary side and another

one is on secondary side of the transformer .so that there is no fault on
the transformer. There is provision of isolator. Earth switch is provided
between line and earth. It acts like a capacitor .Capacitor is a device
which can store the charge. Transmission line work as capacitor .In
case of 400 kV line charge store by capacitor is 5 kV.

Formulaes of power:
1. for generating or utilizing the power :
2. when losses occurs-I2R

Arc quenching means to destroy the arc.

Circuit breakers are define on the basis of arc quenching media used
1. Air blast circuit breaker:
These circuit breakers employ high pressure air blast for
extinguishing the arc.

S.S.B.T.S College of Engineering and Technology, Bambhori, Jalgaon

Page 13

Industrial Lecture
2. Oil circuit breaker:
This circuit breakers employ insulating oil for arc extinction.
3. Sulphur hexafluoride circuit breaker:
This circuit breakers employ sulphur hexafluoride gas is for
arc extinction.
4. Vacuum circuit breaker:
This circuit breakers employ vacuum is for arc extinction.

Dielectric strength of air is 32 kV/cm2.

Oil losses its dielectric strength after 300 operations. Vacuum losses its
dielectric strength after 500000 operations.

As shown in figure, supply is connected to fixed contactor and load is

connected to moving contactor .To move the contacts gearing system
is used which is known as switchgear. The mechanical system used to
operate the contacts are pneumatic cylinder .There are two ports A &
B. When air is given to port A, pressure will developed towards
moving contact side .So that moving contact will move backward. so
that that the circuit will break. This is known as opening action. When
air is given to port B, the moving contact will move forward.

Page 14

Industrial Lecture
In this system instead of compressor spring is provided. For opening of
circuit breaker pressure is given to upper spring. This spring is locked
by pin. So that spring is compressed. By using magnetic circuit this
spring lock will be released .By using the principle of attraction
magnetic flux is created in the coil. The coil will get energized through
relay, by giving one command, the magnet will get energized and this
magnet attract the pin which lock the spring.

Functions performed by switchgear:

1.

Switching during normal operating condition for the purpose

of operation and maintenance.

2.

Switching during abnormal condition such as short circuit

fault, earth fault etc. and interrupting the fault current safely.

Faults occurring on electrical system:

1.

Phase to phase fault

2.

Phase to earth fault

Nature of current during fault condition:

1.

Sub transient state

2.

Transient state

3.

Steady state

Arc quenching techniques:

1.

High resistance method

2.

Current zero method

Making current:
The peak value attained by the current during the first cycle after
a switch, circuit breaker or similar apparatus is closed.

Breaking current:
The current that a switch or breaker can interrupt without arcing
or being destroyed.

Conclusion:
Switch is use for making or breaking the circuit. If this switch is
provided with some gears then it is called as switchgear. There is very
important role of switchgears in an electrical field it protect the electrical
equipment and make operation of equipment easier.
