Upon successful completion of the Degree programme, the graduates gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience about a
wide range of new technologies, adequate to fulfil the needs of a dynamic employment market. Potential employers are software
houses, network service providers, information systems developers, etc.

The graduate of the department possesses the required knowledge for managing the complete life-cycle (design, implementation, test,
installation, maintenance and support) of modern information and telecommunications systems. The program of studies has been
designed in such a way as to fulfil the needs of modern job markets, as well as to prepare graduates to address the challenges of the
rapidly evolving technologies in the domain of informatics, multimedia and telecommunications. Graduates can follow one of the
available professional paths:

Network engineering
Computer engineering
Software Engineering

Network engineering
The Network Engineering specialisation programme at the Informatics Engineering department of TEI of Crete focuses on the study,
analysis, design, synthesis and implementation of networked audiovisual services and applications, by delving into the architectural and
technological principles of a) telecommunication systems and converged services platforms, b) multimedia creation, manipulation and
delivery over heterogeneous infrastructures, and c) network programming, management and administration for guaranteed QoS
provision. Students of this programme can acquire theoretical knowledge and technical expertise in the above areas, as well as to
develop oral and written communication skills and cultivate creative teamwork, through a number of taught lectures and laboratorybased exercises carried under real or control conditions environments (simulations). More specifically, students can obtain state-of-theart know-how in the following areas:

Telecommunications systems and Internet platforms.

Pervasive networks and services infrastructures.
Network management and administration.
Multimedia and interactive services.
Web-based applications and QoS/QoE provision.

The program provides its graduates with the necessary breadth and depth of knowledge in order to function as entry-level system
engineers in the industry (offering sustained career growth in design, prototyping, implementation, integration, maintenance and
performance evaluation testing), or enter graduate programs in the field for advanced study.
Computer Engineering
Computer engineering (CE) as an academic field is best viewed as a combination of computer science and electrical engineering. Its
body of knowledge embodies the science and technology of design, construction, implementation, testing and maintenance of software
and hardware components of modern computing systems and computer-controlled equipment.
Computing systems are components in global markets, including automated transportation systems, control systems, consumer
electronics, Internet, infotainment, defense, healthcare and modern manufacturing plants. Nowadays, the widespread convergence of
several established technologies (such as TV, computer and distributed networking technologies integrated in embedded devices)
results in technological advances and innovation that continues to create new challenges and opportunities for computer engineers.
The CE specialization program at TEI of Crete focuses on developing problem solving abilities related to applying algorithmic,
architectural and technological design principles, analysis and synthesis methods, oral and written communication skills and creative
teamwork through a variety of laboratory experiences with live demonstrations. More specifically, students are able to specialize in the
following areas:
Computer Architecture and Embedded Systems Design
Image Processing, Computer Vision and Intelligent Systems
Computer Graphics and Game development
Systems Communication & Control
The program aims to provide its graduates the necessary breadth and depth of knowledge in order to function as entry-level system
engineers in the industry (offering sustained career growth in design, prototype implementation and/or testing), or enter graduate
programs in the field for advanced study.
Software Engineering
The Software Engineering direction of the Informatics Engineering Department includes core and elective courses which aim for the
training of students in Software Engineering. The main objective of the curriculum of this direction is to educate, familiarize and
specialize its students in a range of disciplines related to the lifecycle of software systems. Students who follow this direction are
educated on current techniques on analysis, development, installation, maintenance, and evaluation of Software Systems (different type
and purpose). Emphasis is given to the development of skills in order to be able to apply these techniques to real problems. Another
important objective of the curriculum of this direction is its graduates to gain a high level of professionalism and responsibility that are
required qualifications to work in the scientific area of Software Engineering. Due to the variety of demands in software, the program is
carefully designed to give students the necessary skills in a wide range of software development approaches to enable them to
successfully integrate them to many and varied software development environments in their professional life.

8. INFORMATION ON THE NATIONAL HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

(i) Structure
The status of higher education in Greece has been reformed the last decade mainly by two state laws. According to the Law
2916/2001, higher education in Greece consists of two parallel sectors: the University sector (Universities, Polytechnic / Fine Arts
Schools and the Open University) and the Technological sector (Technological Educational Institutions/T.E.I.s and the School of
Pedagogic and Technological Education). Furthermore, according to the law 3549/2007, 4009/2011, 4076/2012, certain issues were
adjusted concerning the governance of higher education along with the general guidelines of expanded participation, increased
transparency, accountability and extended autonomy of all higher education institutions.
(ii) Access
Entry requirement to the various Schools/ Departments of the Universities (Panepistimio) and the Technological Educational
Institutions (Technologiko Ekpedeftiko Idryma TEI) depends on the achievement score attained on the National Exams and on the
Certificate obtained by the High School (Lyceum) graduates. More specifically, the general achievement score for a successful entry to
higher education institutions takes into account the grade of the final year of high school and the grades attained on six designated
subjects of the national level examinations. Furthermore, admission to higher education institutions depends on the number of
available places (numerus clausus) and on the candidates' ranked preferences among the higher education schools/ departments.
(iii) Qualifications
Students who successfully complete their studies at Universities and TEIs are awarded a Ptychio (Degree of first cycle of studies). First
cycle programmes last from four years for most fields to five years for engineering and certain other fields of science and six years for
medicine. The Ptychio provides the opportunity for further study at the post-graduate level that includes the one year second cycle
leading to the second degree, Metaptychiako Diploma Eidikefsis equivalent to the Master's degree and the third cycle of studies
leading to the doctorate degree, Didaktoriko Diploma equivalent to the PhD degree.
Recent legislation (Law 3374/2005) on quality assurance in Higher Education, the Credit Transfer System and the Diploma
Supplement defines the framework and criteria for evaluation of University/TEI departments and for the accreditation of student
degrees. These measures aim at promoting student mobility and contributing to the creation of a European Higher Education Area, as
defined by the Bologna Process.
(iv) Ongoing reforms and policy initiatives
Wide reforms have been taking place regarding higher education and the Bologna Process. Law 3794/2009 and 4009/2011
harmonized the operation of the university and technological sectors of higher education and put both Universities and Technological
Education Institutions (TEIs) at the same level of higher education.
http://eacea.ec.europa.eu/education/eurydice/documents/eurybase/national_summary_sheets/047_EL_EN.pdf
As a consequence of the classification of the education institutes, a title (school-leaving, certificate, degree etc.) is compulsory for the
student at each education level in order to continue to the next.
A detailed description of the Greek Education System is offered in:
EURYBASE (http://www.eurydice.org/Eurybase/frameset_eurybase.html) and
EURYDICE (http://www.eurydice.org) database of the European Education Systems.
