the exterior changes were

You can see from the front

Aston claims the GT8 is the most driver-focused V8 Vantage yet made
Reichman says GT8
customers are tending to be
fairly extreme with colour and
specification choices, allowing
their wild side to come out
and putting the graphics on,
choosing all the options and
enjoying the cars analogue
feeling. So far weve seen a
great response in terms of
customers wanting to show
the true spirit of what Vantage

Other options available on
the GT8 include carbonfibre

carbonfibre lower valances and
a carbonfibre roof, although
the last option barely saves any
weight because the cars VH
architecture means the roof
isnt a load-bearing panel.
Quite how the GT8 will

Van Meel suggested a name

It seems the integration of

The technology could

A Week In Cars
Steve Cropley
MONDAY
Elon Musk, Teslas founder
and front man, isnt one to
boast. I know this from having
interviewed him a couple of
times during his rare trips to the
UK. So when he describes the
400,000-odd orders generated
by the launch of his $35,000
Model 3 the accessible Tesla
that will follow the pricier
Model S and Model X as the
single biggest one-week launch
of any new product ever, its
hard to resist the feeling that,
even viewed against the motor
cars entire 131-year span, this
is exceptional public support
for a new car.
There are other amazing
statistics about the public
demand for various cars, of
course. For instance, in 1925
alone, Henry Ford sold more
than two million Model Ts.
Thats 6400 every single day,
if you accept that dealers
were closed on Sundays. Four
decades later, the first Ford
Mustang sold a million copies
in its first 18 months, having
been tipped to do no more than
100,000 a year.
Of course, pundits are
already queueing up to refute
Musks assertion on the
grounds that the $1000 a head
paid by each of 300,000-plus

refundable and non-binding.
Its an expression of faith, say
the critics, not a contract. And
having promised all these cars,
Musk has the enormous task of
following through. Still, I cant
resist the thought that this Tesla
episode is big history and we
should all be enjoying it.
TUESDAY
Away to Cornwall in the Land
Rover Discovery Sport of
managing editor Allan Muir, a
touring trip with the Steering
Committee that Ive been
looking forward to for weeks.
First impressions are not all
positive, though: the interior
seems more spartan than the
prototype I took to the Faroe
Islands at launch time, the seat
cushion wont adjust exactly as
Id like, and the ride, although
flat and composed, is a shade
too knobbly to be luxurious. Yet
as the miles roll, Im continually
reminded of the four-pronged
excellence of the steering.
The perfect rim effort, ideal
gearing, small wheel diameter
and excellent feel around
the straight-ahead are now
delighting me every time I drive.
WEDNESDAY
With Tesla in the news
and this weeks mag Im
seeing handsome Model Ss
everywhere. The only part of the
styling I cant get on with is that
apparently superfluous grille, so
its a relief to hear itll be ditched
when the car gets refreshed. The
shape has always reminded me
of the late 1950s Jensen 541
which did it first and best.

The 488 takes a bit of getting used to, but once acclimatised to its fingertip responses it is a fast, effective, tactile and rewarding cross-country tool
Lightning-quick steering comes courtesy of a 458 Speciales rack; even with these 5k optional seats, the cabin quality lags behind that of some rivals
intuition that gauges body roll and

Little surprise, then, that this

how forthrightly it shuns the idea
of tacked-down sterility. The 488
doesnt want to tear up the road; it
wants to flit and float over it, tethered
by sympathetic chassis tuning and

how innovative and bold the

our original criticisms unanswered.
Teslas right-hand drive conversion
is flawless, consisting of a wide,
centrally positioned brake pedal

adjustable steering column. The aura
of material quality has improved a
little, its leathers and plastics being
notably better than they were. But
the crowning glories remain the
crystal-clear digital instruments and,
moreover, the 17.0in colour display,
which is angled slightly towards
you as part of the asymmetrical
sweep of the cockpit. The screens
functions run beyond the scope

Equipping a car with a Ludicrous
Speed setting is somewhat brave.
Not only does the name playfully
allude to the cinema of Mel Brooks
(its a 30-year-old reference to light
speed being too slow), but it also
ramps up expectations to the nearvertical and opens the door to
potential disappointment.
In one sense, the latter comes to
pass. The P90D, with two testers
aboard, could not be persuaded
to deliver a sub-3.0sec 0-60mph
time and felt unlikely to do so in
any circumstance. This, though, is
a matter for the small print, in that
Teslas claim has always included the
disclaimer of a one-foot rollout. Even
so, its the acceleration figures that
the car records before the legal limit
that make it truly remarkable.
To put it into context, the P85+
tested in 2013 featured the same
electric car party trick: a venomous

plenty of speed through T7.
Throttle-on cornering balance as
you exit is respectable.

SPEC ADVICE
The 90D is the best
compromise of pace,
range and value. Have
smart air suspension
(2200), Autopilot
(2600) and premium
audio (2200). Pick
the jump seats (2600)
only if youll use them.
e called the last Model S we tested a triumph. The P90D, with yet more power, slightly
enhanced battery capacity, all-wheel drive and yes ludicrous potential, is hardly any
less of a revelation. In several ways infotainment, straight-line speed and Autopilot its
so far ahead of rivals that it hardly seems plausible that Tesla started life just 13 years ago.
The models limitations do remain noteworthy. This is still an electric car, so forward planning
will occasionally be required. But even this has been alleviated less by the car, more by the
growing network of superchargers, the closest things to electricity pumps weve yet encountered.
Perhaps the most convincing argument against buy a P90D is that Tesla still hasnt applied a
final level of polish to the car that would mean it conclusively looks, feels and drives better than
anything else offered at its high asking price. However, the fact that the reasons for not buying one
are now dramatically outweighed by the incentives shows just how far the Model S has come.

Good Sportsman
The prospect of a new Mini saloon variant is very interesting (News,
6 April), but I think naming it Riley or Wolesley would be totally wrong.
All upper-market Mini models have man at the end of their names,
so something to complement Clubman and Countryman is required.
I think the name Sportsman would be ideal, especially as the car would
obviously be a sports saloon.
Im old enough to remember that there used to be a Sportsman in
the Standard Vanguard and Ensign range, so if BMW has rights to the
Standard-Triumph names, Sportsman may already be registered to it.
I also think the Mini Convertible should be a member of the Mini
hatch group, not be a superhero in its own right, creating a vacancy
in that group of five perhaps to be filled by the Rocketman or the
Superleggera.

OVERRATED R
I was astounded to see the Volkswagen
Golf R in at number two in your Top 50
feature (Autocar 30 march).
I test drove the Golf and found it
boring. While fast, it has no fun appeal.
I wouldnt put it in the top five hot

FALLING ROCKET
I fear a Mini Rocketman EV would be a
bad move for the brand (News, 6 April).
Its too costly a venture to allow BMW
to make them cheap enough to sell in
meaningful numbers.

THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND
I think the time might have finally come
to consider ditching indicators from new
cars and possibly removing the bulbs
from the rest.
At most regular junctions its
generally obvious where a car is going
anyway, while indicator use is virtually
non-existent on motorways already.
And roundabouts? Good grief! No
indicators would be a positive benefit
on roundabouts. Even on the odd
occasions they are used, half the time
the car is not even traveling in the
direction its indicating.

POTHOLE MAGNETS
I was surprised to see so many SUVs
on the list of cars most affected by
pothole insurance claims (autocar.co.uk,
4 April), but I believe they are there for
a few reasons.
Folks might think they can drive
straight over a pothole on the basis that
their car is off-road capable. But the
degree of off-road capability of SUVs
varies enormously, and road speeds can
be far higher than those that are sensible
off road, so pothole impacts may far
exceed off-road impacts.
SUVs are often bigger than other
cars. Faced with a line of parked cars and
oncoming traffic, SUVs may have far
fewer options to avoid potholes.

cut-off where a cars value damages
its usability. If its not fear of kerbing a

It looks desperate from certain angles, but the BMW is still a
sure bet. Arguably offers the most sporting drive. AAABC

on how you spec it. Looks and cabin top notch. AAABC
