Philippine Institutions 10 (The Life and Works of Jose Rizal)

Section C
Second Semester of A.Y. 2015-2016
Faculty-in-charge
HERALD IAN C. GUIWA
ELIEZAR L. IIGO
EUGENE RAYMOND P. CRUDO
Course Goals
Broadly stated these are the following:
1) to trace the transformation of the consciousness of Jose Rizal, from a man who called Spain his mother
country to a person resembling Simoun, the nationalist character in El Filibusterismo. (One becomes a
Filipino; one is not born automatically a Filipino.)
2) to create meanings and functions for Jose Rizal, so that he will remain relevant and part of the strengthening
of the Filipino national story and community. (We refer to common symbols though there are diverse
meanings and functions emanating from sectors of society. The more significations the better, symbols
become more powerful.)
3) to become aware of the many possibilities of what a Filipino can do for his country. ("Knowing yourself means
knowing what you can do and since nobody knows what he can do unless he tries the only clue to what man
can do is what man has done". Robin George Collingwood)
4) to appreciate that the study of the past is in terms of learning about human experience and to understand it as
a basis for discussion, exchange, and dialogue. (Uniformity of ideas is not the objective, what is more
important is the act of communicating with one another, discourse has to be developed.)
Course Approaches
1) The course is only a means to an end it is not an end in itself, the greater end is the instilling of nationalism
and heroism among the Filipino youth. PI 10 is only a platform.
2) We are Filipinos because we have the Filipino story in us and Rizal's biography is an integral part of our
collective identity.
3) PI 10 is a biography and society course. His life has to be situated in his own time and conditions. There are
parallels between Rizal the person and we as individuals. We both belong to a society which we call
Philippine society.
4) The requirements of the course are patterned to make the students Rizal-like, writing is given importance. We
have to tell our own narratives and be enriched by sharing with others our own viewpoints. ("To exist
humanly, is to name the world". Paulo Freire)
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

Course Prerequisites
Rizal was a writer; therefore, the student should know how to write and loves reading essays, novels, etc. PI 10
is a reading class. Knowledge of 19th century Philippines and contemporary Philippine society is going to be
helpful. Social awareness is inherent in a UP student and is given premium in the course. We should see
continuities between past and present. A good command of written English or Filipino is expected from the
student. A cultural approach is to be explored. As mentioned previously, the course takes the student to the
various aspects of Philippine studies. Therefore, a working knowledge of Philippine history and Philippine cultural
achievements is necessary.
Course Materials
Reproduction of materials can be done at designated outlets along the Grove, Los Baos. You may download

House Rules
On attendance and classroom decorum:
The doors will be locked after 20 minutes, being tardy should be avoided; the teacher doesn't want to be
disrupted by late arrival of students.
Once the doors are closed, no one is allowed to leave the room (except in case of an emergency) until
dismissal time, going to the comfort rooms and the like must be done before class.
Excessive unexcused absences are penalized by a failing grade.
Passing of notes to classmates is prohibited, talking or whispering to classmates is not allowed when it
bothers the focus of the teacher.
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE A PHOTO OF MY PRESENTATIONS.
student assistants are tasked to check the attendance, a seating arrangement will be implemented
On make-up exams and missed requirement
teachers hate making special exams, these exams are inherently unfair to students taking the regular
exam since these are taken under different conditions
no make-ups are given, the student gets zero in everything he/she fails to submit or take due to absence
however, under certain circumstances, a special exam may be given subject to certain conditions such as:
-informing the faculty-in-charge the reason of ones absence not later than 48 hrs after
missing the exam
-Submission of certain documentary requirements such as medical certificate, hospital bill,
etc.
On papers, essays, and other requirements that are to be submitted: (both for the lecture and recitation classes)
adhere to rules pertaining to intellectual property rights, plagiarism has no place in the university, what is
not yours in a paper should be within quotation marks or properly identified, citation is a must, for proper
citation use the Chicago Manual or check the internet for examples (papers should have
endnotes/footnotes and bibliographies, presence of bibliographies do not cure plagiarism)
In citing internet sites, the student must indicate the website address, the date of access to the site and
the name of its author or developer usually found at the end of the web page
A grade of 5.0 will be given to a student committing intellectual dishonesty (this includes submission of old
or another persons paper)
In addition, the necessary disciplinary action will be taken by the faculty-in-charge against the student
Late submission of papers is not allowed (applies both to the lecture and recitation classes)
Format of synthesis papers and autobiography:
All papers are double-spaced, font 12, times new roman, a paper is not a paper without a title, use short
bond paper margin is 1-inch on the top, bottom and on both sides, texts must be justified
There must be sub-titles or sub-headings within the paper, innovate what titles, sub-titles/ sub-headings
you want to have
Use English or Filipino, language switching is not allowed, in other words, taglish is a no-no
The number of pages is counted in terms of the last leaf as having entries in the bottom part of the page,
there must be pagination but no page number on page 1
Absolutely, no folders, simply staple your work
Confer with the student assistants if papers/requirements were received by the faculty
FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE PRESCRIBED FORMAT MEANS A GRADE OF 0.
How to write a synthesis paper or make a video:
Students will be asked to build their thoughts and ideas on concepts encountered in the course

The paper should highlight the students own reading of the ideas and concepts of the course
Edify your UP person hood, try to combine what you learn in PI 10 with your other courses
Proper citation of sources must be made (again, bibliographies plus footnotes or endnote
On groupings:
Groupings will be done in the recitation classes to facilitate the conduct of activities
The recitation teachers will determine the manner by which the groups will be created
During examinations:
Questions will come from the readings, one must read in order to pass the subject, lectures are not
enough
The use of cell phones is strictly prohibited, violators will be penalized with a failing grade
Strictly no talking, no glancing during exams
Activities / Practical Work / Assignments
Lecture-Recitations will be the usual mode of delivering knowledge. Instructions will be given as to where
a particular requirement will be submitted
Students are expected to read materials that are assigned.
