Superheat, Reheat

Attemperator Spray
Service in Fossil Plants

The Problem

To Final Superheat

Figure A

Steam temperature control is required at the outlet of superheaters and reheaters. It is normally accomplished through spray water
injection, controlled by a modulating control valve. During low-load
conditions, the control valve is ineffective, resulting in leakage
which may lead to turbine water induction as load is subsequently
increased. For this reason, a power-operated Block Valve is recommended for tight shutoff.1 See Figures A and B.

The Solution
In many cases, older plants do not have the recommended Block
Valve. In some cases, a second Control Valve or Globe Valve has
been installed to provide tight shutoff. Optimum tight shutoff for this
service can be attained with a Double-Disc Gate Valve. Anchor/Darling Double-Disc Gate Valves can be furnished with pneumatic or
electric motor actuation to provide excellent isolation in low-load
circumstances. Anchor/Darling Control Valves, such as the Spray
Control Valve can provide the longevity of service required by this
application. Anchor/Darling Valve Company can furnish a unit package of both Control and Block Valves, each designed to the specic
task assigned it. Consult your Anchor/Darling representative.
Refer to ASME Standard TDP-1-1980, Sections 3.2 and 3.5.
