Using a search engine

Searching for a website
If you are looking for a website, but do not know the URL address, you can
search for the website using a search engine.
There are many search engines available on the Internet. Some of the
commonly used search engines are shown below.

Often, Internet browser applications such as Microsoft Internet Explorer,

have search engine toolbars.

To search for a website using a search engine, you need to

enter keywords for your search.
If you are searching for the Discovery Channel Kids website, for
example, enter the keywords 'Discovery Kids' into the search
engine and click on 'Search'. Below is an example of this search,
using the Google search engine.

The search engine will then display a list of websites related to

your keywords. Notice that the first website in the list is the
Discovery Channel Kids website.

To go to the website, click on the hyperlink. The hyperlink is

usually the first line of text with underline and appears in
blue.

Searching a subject
A search engine can also be used to search for websites about a
particular subject. To do so, enter keywords that best describe the subject.
To search for websites about foods in Brunei Darussalam, for
example, enter the keywords 'foods' and 'Brunei Darussalam'.

A list of websites relating to your search is then displayed. To go to a

Visit one of the websites that appears in the search
results.
In your ICT notebook, write a few sentences to describe
the website.

Searching for photographs

The Internet is a great resource for finding photographs to use for
school projects. Many search engines, such as Google and Yahoo,
include an option that allows you to search for only images.
Let's look at the steps to take when searching for images in a
search engine.
Open a search engine website. In this example, we will use
the Google search engine (www.google.com.bn).
Type in keywords about the image you are searching for and
click on 'Google Search'. In this example, we will search for
photographs of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque.

A list of websites about your search keywords is

then displayed.

On the left side of the search results, you will see other
search options. Click on the 'Images' hyperlink.

A list of images related to your search is then displayed. Each

image is a hyperlink to the website it can be found on.

When you click on an image, a larger preview size is usually

displayed.

Information about the photograph, such as the size

and the website it is from, is displayed on the right. To
view the image in full size, click on the 'Full-size
image' hyperlink.

The image is then displayed at its maximum size.

Copying from a website

Copying text
Many websites have text that can be copied and pasted into word
processors and other applications.
Open the website with the text that you would like to copy.
In the example below, we will copy text from the Wikipedia
website about Brunei Darussalam (http://wikipedia.org/wiki/
Brunei).
Click and drag to select the text you want to copy.

Right click on the selected text

and click on 'Copy'. The selected
text will then be copied to your
computer's clipboard.

Go to the application in which you would like to paste the

copied text. In this example we will paste the text into
Notepad.
Go to the 'Edit menu and click on 'Paste'. You can also
paste the text using the shortcut 'Control' + 'P'.

The text will then be pasted into the application.

Copying images
Most of the photographs, illustrations and other images
on the Internet can be copied to your computer. You can
then use these images in school projects.
Open the website with the image that you would like
to copy. In the example below, we will copy an image
from the Brunei Tourism website.

Right click on the image

and click on 'Copy' from the
menu. The image is then
copied to your computer's
clipboard.

Open the folder on your computer where you would like to

store the image. Right click and choose 'Paste' from the
menu.

The image is now stored on your computer and can be

opened in a graphics, word processing or slideshow
application.

You can also paste a copied image from the Internet

directly into an application, such as Microsoft Paint,
Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint.
Let's look at how to paste an image directly into Microsoft
Paint. Open a blank canvas in Microsoft Paint.

Click on the 'Clipboard' icon in the main toolbar and

choose 'Paste'. The image can now be edited or

For each of the searches above, choose one image and save
it to your computer.
Use Microsoft Paint to create a file with all three images.

Adding shortcuts to your favourite websites

When you read a book, you can use a bookmark to mark the page that
you are reading up to. This makes it easier to find the page the next time
you start reading. You can also use bookmarks in an Internet browser to
quickly access websites that you like or visit often. In Microsoft Internet
Explorer, bookmarks are called 'Favourites'.
There are two ways to add your favourite websites to Microsoft Internet
Explorer adding a website to the 'Favourites' bar and adding a
website to the 'Favourites' menu.

Adding a website to the 'Favourites' bar

In Microsoft Internet Explorer, the 'Favourites' bar is usually located
under the main toolbar.

In the example above, there are two websites in the 'Favourites' barthe
Discovery Kids Home Page and the BBC Schools Science Clips websites.
Let's look at how to add a website to the 'Favourites' bar. In this
example we will add the Yahoo Kids home page to the 'Favourites' bar.

Type the URL address of the website you want to add

into the 'address' bar and press 'Enter.
Once the website has loaded in the web browser, click on the
'Add to Favorites bar', icon.

A hyperlink to the website is then automatically added to the

'Favourites' bar. To go to the website at any time, click on the
hyperlink.

To delete a website from the 'Favourites' bar, right

click on the hyperlink and choose 'Delete'. Click on
'Yes' to confirm the deletion.

Adding a website to the 'Favourites' menu

The 'Favourites' bar is good to store the websites that you visit
often. If you want to create hyperlinks to more websites, you can
add them to the 'Favourites' menu.
In this example, we will add the PBS Kids website to the
'Favourites' menu.
Type the URL address of the website you want to add into
the 'address' bar and press 'Enter'.
Once the website has loaded in the web browser, click on
the 'Favorites' icon.

Click on the 'Add to Favourites...' icon at the top of the menu.

Click on 'New Folder' to create a new folder in which

to store your favourite websites. In this example,
we will call the folder 'My Websites'.
Type a name for the website hyperlink and click on
'Create'.

In the
'Favourites'
menu, you can
store many
websites and
organise them
into folders.

Exercise 2.4 - Adding favourites to a web

Open your Internet browser application and visit some of
the websites listed on pages 18 to 23.
Click on 'Add to Favourites...' and create a new
folder called 'My Websites'.
In the folder, add some of your favourite websites from
